Notes on historical context
A huge part of fic writing in the HBO War fandom lies in historical research - I'm sure my writer friends can all attest to this - and it's personally one of my favourite parts of the whole process! As a result, I've decided to compile a few notes on the history used in my two current MoTA fics; I'm Your Man and Better Off
I'm aware this probably isn't interesting to a lot of people, but to any kindred spirits I hope you enjoy 😂
I'm Your Man
Frankie's hometown - Stratford-upon-Avon
Stratford-upon-Avon is a market town in the county of Warwickshire in the English West Midlands, which has existed as a settlements since the Roman occupation, but is particularly notable for being the birthplace of famous playwright William Shakespeare. The house in which Shakespeare grew up in remains a popular tourist attraction, evidencing visits from several notable writers including Charles Dickens and Lord Byron.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Coventry Blitz
In Chapter 4, Frankie references the Coventry Blitz - a series of bombing raids between 1940-42, most notably on the night of 14th November 1940. In a single night, two-thirds of the city's buildings were damaged or destroyed, making it the most concentrated bombing of an English city in the entire war. In the aftermath, the word 'Coventration' was coined by Joseph Goebells to refer to the act of completely destroying a city through aerial attacks. I have spoken to people who lived in the towns around Coventry during this time who recall large groups of displaced families walking from town to town in search of shelter, as the destruction of housing was so extensive that people could not remain within the city.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rationing
In the first few chapters, Frankie makes several references to the state of food rationing in 1943. Throughout the Second World War, food supply in the UK was severely limited due to its reliance on imports, and the economic state was so dire following the war that Britain continued rationing until 1954. Huge campaigns were introduced encouraging people to grow and supply their own food, and many commodities became unavailable due to shortages in certain ingredients. One such example was the production of Cadbury's chocolate, which had to be altered to 'Ration chocolate' due to milk shortages.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Young Visiters by Daisy Ashford
In Chapter 7, Frankie is seen reading The Young Visiters, a hugely popular book published in 1919. The book's charm and popularity came from its author, as Daisy Ashford was allegedly only nine years old at the time of publication, and her unconventional writing and youthful misunderstanding of Victorian high society lend to the book's rather bizarre sense of humour.
Education
In Chapter 6, Rosie learns to his surprise that Frankie has not attended school since she was 14 years old. Under the 1918 Education Act, the school leaving age was raised from 12 to 14 years old, with high drop-out rates due to the inaccessibility of many schools to the working class.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Better Off
The ATS
The Auxiliary Territorial Service was active from 1938, and operated as the women's branch of the British Army until it was absorbed into the Women's Royal Army Corps in 1949. The National Service Act of 1941 called for all unmarried women between the ages of 20 and 30 to join one of Britain's auxiliary services, and by 1943 nine of out every ten women were taking an active role in the war effort. Due to manpower shortages, many ATS women took on roles in radar and anti-aircraft defense, resulting over 700 casualties throughout the war. Most notable of the ATS volunteers was Princess Elizabeth Windsor (later Elizabeth II), who worked as a mechanic as well as driving lorries and ambulances.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Manchester Blitz
The attack which killed Susie's sister Ellie was a part of a series of bombing raids known as the Manchester Blitz, which took place between 1940 and 1942. Manchester and its surrounding towns were key for war production, and as such targeted heavily by the Luftwaffe, resulting in approximately 1,000 deaths. The nights of the 22nd and 23rd of December 1940 were the most devastating attacks on Manchester during the war, with more than 450 tons of explosives dropped across the two consecutive nights.
Tumblr media
Back-to-back houses
The home that Susie's family were raised in was part of a large wave of construction in the UK of so-called 'back-to-backs', designed to support the huge influx of working-class families moving into urban areas during the Industrial Revolution. Back-to-backs were built quickly and cheaply, and named due to their shared back walls, which saw one row of houses facing the street and another rear row facing either another road or an interior courtyard. These houses were often very cramped, with only one room per floor, and usually had two to three stories, occasionally with a cellar too.
It was rare for back-to-backs to accommodate indoor plumbing, with washhouses and toilets located outside in the yards. Due to poor living conditions, the construction of new back-to-backs was forbidden in 1909 after a report discovered mortality rates to be significantly higher than those of people living in other styles of housing. Waves of slum clearance before and after the Second World War saw the numbers of back-to-backs decline rapidly, and Leeds remains the only area of England that still contains large numbers of livable back-to-backs. The only surviving courtyard back-to-backs now exist in Birmingham, preserved as a museum.

Tag game: 10 characters from 10 fandoms
I was tagged by @hogans-heroes and my old laptop is working for 5 minutes on it's last legs so let's do this before it craps out again! God I gotta go way back in the earlier fandom days for some of these, I haven't been in a fandom since I was a teenager until MotA & Dune
1. Gale "Buck" Cleven (Masters of the Air) I would put Bucky as well but I can only choose one *cries* and I feel a complete kinship with this character and his mannerisms/traumas/personality etc.
Tumblr media
2. Paul Atreides (Dune/Dune Part Two) look, I know he's an anti-hero and drank the worm juice so he turned into a crazy dictator but mans went through a lot and became a bad-ass doing it
Tumblr media
3. Kiba (Wolf's Rain) do NOT get me started unless you want me a blubbering mess for a week straight
Tumblr media
4. Ryuk (Death Note)
Tumblr media
5. Stiles Stilinski (Teen Wolf) YES I was a Teen Wolf girlie.. sue me
Tumblr media
6. Klaus Mikaelson (The Vampire Diaries/The Originals)
Tumblr media
7. Arthur Pendragon (Merlin) still LOVE this character but can't help but get a visceral reaction when I look at him now because he looks like my ex. Actor has the same fucking first name too. Go figure. Sorry, boo (Arthur)!
Tumblr media
8. Wil Ohmsford (Shannara Chronicles) My obsession for Austin Butler I wholeheartedly blame for this one. He should be higher up on the list, but eh. Love him, he's an idiot tasked with saving the world. Dorky dumbass x 100 with the situational awareness of a 2 week old kitten.
Tumblr media
9. Triss (The Witcher: Wild Hunt Game version)
Tumblr media
10. Dean Winchester (Supernatural) Supernatural really dropped the ball in later seasons honestly, but I still love the earlier ones and the character. Him and Sam are just alternative universe versions of me and my best friend.
Tumblr media
I'm gonna tag: @avonne-writes @onyxsboxes @antiquitea @trashbag-baby666 if you guys feel like it and anyone else who would like to!

if u had to choose 2 ppl from each hbo war show to create the most insufferable gropu known to man, who would u pick? (i would say web and leckie r obviously there bc how could they not)
web, leckie, and ME!…. iconic triumvirate of insufferable losers.
this might be slightly controversial but my top picks are actually going to be leckie & snafu from tp, perconte & speirs from bob, and harding & bucky from mota. i will explain my choices under the read more for anyone who is curious
anyway i approached this as like. whats a nightmare socratic seminar. nightmare blunt rotation. and the key to that is not really do i personally find them annoying but are they capable of pissing everyone else off so much that if i were in the vicinity the vibes would be so rancid it would make me want to kill myself.
this is why we have to cut webster. do i want to be stuck in a room with him? no. however that poor man is so bully-able its so easy to dunk on him and there is no situation in which he could survive some of my ideal groupings without getting bullied so hard that i just feel bad for the guy. so he has to leave goodbye!
as for the rest of them. leckie is so naturally and frankly beautifully anti authority i think he would get along absolutely terribly with harding and speirs. snafu has such a natural ability to harsh the vibes so hes gotta be there. perconte is first and foremost a complainer and whiner he will be bitching the whole time and i think everyone else will want to strangle him for it. speirs is also here to harsh the vibes just in a different way. harding honestly just personally annoying to me lmao idk its that smug pilot douchey energy idk im not a fan. also leckie would tear his ass to shreds i think. dare i say an iconic kill larkin or shut the fuck up moment in the making. as for bucky i have some reservations about this one. not because i dont think hes annoying. hes soooo annoying #AnnoyingKing however i am frightened that his friendly nature will have him unionizing with say leckie and/or snafu. this may work in our favor or it may not. idk its hard to say hes a wild card. however i must put my faith in his ability to be a massive bitch and make terrible decisions and #Lose. #NeverStopLosing
unfortunately there are simply too many things to consider and it, at the end of the day, depends. and of course there are so many ways to be insufferable this is merely one of its many infinite variations.

Sort of a reference for how Brighid evolves over her years in Kirkwall:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Act 1: No makeup, and no more hairstyling than running a brush through it. She's a farm girl apostate on the run from both Darkspawn and Templars, after all
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Act 2: You're a noble now, and your mother insists you tame your unruly hair into something nicer and more ladylike.
Tumblr media
MotA: Mother insisted Brighid have her hair and makeup done for the party. It didn't end up being very necessary.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Act 2.5, after Leandra's murder. Brighid doesn't care about her hair anymore. She's not eating well or bathing regularly. Her normally voluminous hair falls flat and loses its shine.
Tumblr media
Post Arishok Defeat, but before she starts caring about her appearance again. It takes a while for that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Act 3: Champion hair. Mostly up and out of the way (Mother would have liked it...) but enough hair falls out to show how curly it is. After her fight with the Arishok, the splash of blood across her face became known as a symbol of the Champion and was stuck to her legend. She ended up not fighting this (there are so many things to fight already) and started re-applying the trademark smear with makeup (some anti-Fereldens whisper she uses the kaddis for her hound to make the smear)

Last Line Tag
thank you @johnslittlespoon for tagging me!! <3
Well, it was actually during June (oops), but now I have the last line of the first chapter of something MOTA-related, so:
My King’s Crown is made of Flowers WIP Ch1:
"He hated what had happened above the skies of Bremen for the violence, the death, and the horror it had brought, for how it had made him feel so fragile and terrified. In the sky, with the B-17 melting like butter under the blazing enemy anti-aircraft fire. On the ground, for how it had exhausted him, leaving him too drained to maintain his composure in the war of attrition he was fighting with John."
It's Pining Gale POV time. So much pining awaits him, poor dear.
I'm doing some last final touch-ups, but I hope to post this one on Friday. So excited to finally dip my toes into the MOTA writing world.
Tagging anyone else who’s as late to the party as I am!

god i hope u know that i’m trying to like maureen but if she goes for sanchez i will take sanchez’s side even tho i don’t know her 🙏🏽🙏🏽 woc solidarity (unless she’s portuguese)
Hahaha that qualifier sent me… but I swear, Maureen ain’t coming for her
But here’s the deal! You don’t have to like Maureen! That’s ok! I hope maybe by the end you do? But if not, still ok.
Actually is one thing about MotA I thought was interesting -there’s no real anti hero or unlikable person in it. Save for Germans. Unlike, I think we could say, in pacific and in BoB where even some of our own were either initially irritating, became so for a period or remained decidedly so.
I feel it’s more likely to be stuck in a foxhole with some asshole, or at least a SNAFU sort who makes you wanna drown yourself in a mud pool on occasion, than to have say -having a Eugene Roe or a Charles Cruikshank as your bunk buddy. there’s usually disliked people in these times, in under pressure scenarios.
But I do hope she at least climbs up a few rungs in the ladder of your esteem. By the end.

Prudencia Ayala (April 28, 1885 - July 11, 1936) was a writer, social activist, and campaigner for women’s rights in El Salvador, she was the first woman to run for President in El Salvador.
She was born to Aurelia Ayala and Vicente Chief in the state of Sonsonate, El Salvador, and was of African and Indigenous ancestry. Her family moved to Santa Ana City, El Salvador when she was ten years old, and she attended Maria Luisa de Cristofine’s elementary school before dropping out after the second grade. She never finished school and was largely self-taught. She learned to sew and worked as a seamstress.
She traveled to the western region of El Salvador and after publishing opinion pieces in the newspaper, Diary in the West became recognized as an activist. She was vocal in many political and social movements, including anti-imperialism, feminism, and Central American reunification. She protested the US invasion of Nicaragua.
She published poems and had a reputation for fortune-telling. She allegedly predicted the fall of Germany’s Kaiser and the involvement of the US in WWI. Her predictions were published in Santa Ana’s El Salvador newspapers. She was arrested and jailed for two months for accusations of collaborating in the planning of a coup against the government. She published her first book, Escribe: Adventures of a Trip to Guatemala. She published other books, including Amores de Loca and Fumada Mota. She ran a newspaper called Rendencion Femenina.
In 1930, Ayala attempted to run as a presidential candidate in El Salvador despite the nation barring women from voting. She ran under the Unionist Party label. Her presidential nomination was rejected by the Salvadoran Supreme Court.
After her death, she was ignored and erased from history books for decades until information about her was brought to the public’s attention by feminist movements in El Salvador. She was recognized by a street named in her honor Avenida Prudencia Ayala in the San Jacinto neighborhood of San Salvador. It is one of only two streets in the Salvadoran capital named after a woman. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Uuuuuuuughhhh do I want to say this NO but … I DO find it interesting in a je nais cest quoi way that hanks likes to have a Jewish character stumble upon concentration camps … thats two nickels
Suggesting another character couldn’t be affected by it without having a personal connection
And the Jewish character in the POW March helping up the Nazi commander … was that supposed to be poignant? it just made me feel sick

I love Kaia, but you congratulate her so much for where she is now but you don’t congratulate Austin for working hard for decades with no connections and getting where he is. I find that weird. Can you explain why? I’m not looking to attack just a conversation. And then you sort of just accused him of using Kaia and her connections. He still works very hard to get what he has. Nobody is hiring him because he knows Cindy Crawford. His dedication hard work and talent is why he gets hired.
well she was on a late night show last night and he was not- that's the simplest possible answer here. i post about what's going on and when she's doing more publicly than him at any given time then that's going to bleed over to who i post more about. during mota and dune press i barley posted about *her* to the extent that i got some anons asking if i still liked her! i think that's just how running a blog for more than one person shakes out, i'm sure i'll "fall behind" with posting about her when bikeriders press starts and we're seeing more of austin out and about.
and it was her first *ever* late night interview, which is a big deal! and getting to experience a milestone like that for someone i'm a fan of was really nice. i wasn't in the fandom for austin's first late night appearance, i would've jumped up and down and cheered for that too if i was. last fall when the first bikeriders reviews came out of telluride and they were so glowing about austin it made me *cry* over how proud i was. and then i got a few anons bitching at me asking why i "didn't think he was capable" and "had to prove himself" lol. when i say it feels like i can never win on here...
i've said multiple times on both here and twitter in the past almost 2 years that ive run this blog that i'm very proud of austin. me also being proud of kaia/enjoying seeing her hitting milestones like late night interviews this doesn't negate that at all. i'm proud of them in like- different ways if that makes sense? austin, for like what you said, putting his nose to the grindstone and hustling to get to where he is now. kaia for going after her dreams re: acting vs modeling and for what she's doing to grow her passion project, book club/library science.
and no, i didn't accuse him of that. i said in a preceding tweet that that absolutely not why they're dating. their relationship isn't fake or "just for connections" on either side! it *is* however ridiculous when people accuse kaia of only using austin for his connections when she, as a nepo baby, has a million connections of her own and doesn't "need him" to get her foot in the door in the industry. isn't that the whole reason ppl are anti nepo baby? the "privilege of connections"?.
anyone who would genuinely suggest austin is only using kaia for her connections is also goofy bc their relationship isn't PR/i think it's clear he's with her because he wants to be with her. it's just hypocritical, and a little silly to act dating a nepo baby as a non nepo baby comes with absolutely 0 connections benefit at all. and that's not a bad thing either! as a huge fan of laura dern i love that she’s a mentor to him/they're buddies now bc of it! george clooney came to his defense when asked about his voice bc, as george said himself, the time he's spent around austin because he's dating his best friend's daughter. the 'butterfly effect' is pretty damn cool. i don't see it as an insult to chat about.

I will send u cat photos in a bit, but for rn: what ocs have a death grip on you rn and why? (this is an essay) (but i am also being silly) (i would like an essay) (english class essay) (minimum word count 500) (thats a joke)
Oh shit I missed this one yesterday, but yk it's appreciated today too :) Anyways definitely the main OC that's been on my mind lately is Sammy. He's just sooooo coooool. She's got all my favorite narrative elements, subversion of the horror genre, anti-military sentiment, weird old man adopting a weirder kid, and Riot Grrrl. She's really got it all. But I think mostly what's going on in my head is how I'm gonna structure the comic. Webcomics are a great way to break into making comics, but because you're only uploading a page or two at a time you gotta keep the audience captivated with only a small amount of information. I'm excited to explore horror comics because I think horror is a genre that IS good at keeping your audience drawn in with minimal info. I'm glad so many people have shown interest in Sam because I'm not ready to commit to AoC which I've been working on for so long, or MotA which I hope to make as a graphic novel.
I'd go into wayyyyyy more detail on Sam and her whole deal if it weren't for the fact that by this time next year he'll have his own comic.
However I can talk about her anyways. Mainly stuff that won't happen for quite a while like Sam actually joining the band. The bandmates still need names, except the drummer, who's name is Imani. I'm most excited for the band because it will mark the most lighthearted part of the comic right before shit gets real bad again. It's the first taste Sam gets of being a normal teenager, she gets good at bass, hangs out with her friends, has sleepovers, all the shit she never got to have growing up. Then of course the roadtrip picks back up, but this time with three more teenage girls. The tone'll stay lighter for a while, but having the other girls around makes things more complicated, in a lot of ways that are just, normal teen drama bullshit less than "this is a horror comic".
I hope mainly that all y'all like my comic. I wish I could promise a more frequent update schedule, but right now we're lookin' at a page a month. Still, I'm excited to introduce y'all to Sam properly :)

Tbh I’m only keeping Sebastian installed so that Lelianna recognizes Hawke in MOTA and it’s very funny to imagine Hawke justifying why he’s around to their friends. “Look, yeah this dude SUCKS so bad he’s the antithesis to most of us including & especially Anders and Merrill and ME and even the most pro-Chantry/anti-mage of you can’t stand him but he’s paying well and I’d rather keep my friends close and enemies closer, so get off my dick (gender neutral) about it I promise he won’t learn about wicked grace night!”

Augusto o anti-fascista
