Miss Parloa’s New Cook Book, A Guide to Marketing and Cooking by Maria Parloa HDBK 1886 $80 Title: Miss Parloa’s New Cook Book, A Guide to Marketing and Cooking Author: Parloa, Maria Description: 430 pp. Chromolithograph frontispiece, other illustrations in text. original green cloth stamped in gilt and black. One of America’s most influential cooking authorities of the late 19th century, and one of the first of the cooking school teachers to achieve wealth through corporate sponsorship when she authored a book for a milling company that soon became General Mills. Miss Parloa’s New Cook Book continued to be revised and reissued until 1908. The Back pages are unused and blank in the Additional Recipes part. Condition: Near Fine with slight wear to the edges, small water mark on side of pages (Please see images) The Pictorial cover is in very good condition with minor rubbing at the edges, Please see images for details. Book plate in the front of book that was once a part of the Fryeburg Women’s Club Library. Writing on the first fly page. In the 1890’s, this is how you learned to cook the vegetables you grew in your garden! Thanks to a collaboration between Burpee Seed Company and Mrs. Sarah Tyson Rorer, America’s first dietician and foremost authority on maximizing food and nutrition, this 182 page book shares recipes, preservation techniques, harvesting instructions and menu suggestions for just about every vegetable under the sun or at least the home garden anyway;) This edition was published in 1892 and is filled with so many interesting recipes like tomato butter, rhubarb wine, carrot marmalade and onion vinegar and even includes what now seems like exotic edibles - dandelions, poke, chicory, narrow dock and capsicums. About 15% of the recipes contain meat, fish or poultry but all feature vegetables as the star of the show, so if you were a vegetarian 130 years ago, this is what you were eating.
