Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street opened on Broadway in 1979 and Anya went to see it with Hallie and D'Hoffryn and other vengeance demons. They all loved the plot (revenge! vengeance!) except for the ending - they lose interest when it has morals attached. Though Anya thinks it's realistic that women who get involved with men will end up paying for it in the end.

Just, think about it!! A man (Sweeney Todd) gets revenge on the people who had him wrongfully imprisoned so they could steal his wife and child from him?? Vengeance demons would be all over that!!!!!!

The man's downstairs neighbor (Mrs. Lovett) who is completely in love with him (and decided to save NOT his child but his shiny expensive razors and keep them for YEARS after he was imprisoned) + when Sweeney starts killing she's like "well, with the price of meat what it is and you needing some way to dispose of the bodies, I suppose I could use this to benefit my pie shop" and then she gets rich off this murder/cannibalism scheme you know who would absolutely love that????

Vengeance Demon Anya Jenkins, that's who!!!!!

Mrs. Lovett is Anya's favorite character and after Anya loses her vengeance powers and suddenly she's falling in love with Xander and taking dangerous risks to be around him and the Scoobies and now she has to afford things and she understands why Mrs. Lovett would be down with vengeance not just for vengeance's sake but for the sake of love (and money, don't forget money). And after Xander leaves her at the altar, when Anya can finally form a coherent thought again, she finds her Sweeney Todd VHS and rewatches it because this fictional character would understand what she's going through and if Xander was going to break her heart, well, at least he didn't throw her into an oven (but also Anya kinda wishes he had because that would probably hurt less)

Anya was so misused and underused as a character. Her wasted potential kills me. With Angel and Spike, the writers went “Hmm, he’s a formerly evil immortal demon allied with the protagonist, we should give him a nuanced character arc that explores his past crimes, his redemption, soul lore, and what it means to be a good person,” but with Anya they just went “Ehh, make her into a comic relief love interest.” That’s why I say that the version of her we see in season seven is the most interesting and meaningful version. Selfless was an amazing episode, everything about her S7 arc in general was great, and I honestly believe that they should have begun exploring that side of Anya way earlier. S4-6 Anya was basically a poor man’s Cordelia (except there’s only one Cordy, so it sometimes felt kind of lackluster, plus they already had Spike to fill that “Cordelia” role while still being different enough from her that he didn’t feel like a replacement) and it sucks.

Anya is over 1100 years old, she has more intelligence and skill than the entire scooby gang combined. So many of their weekly hijinks would be solved if they just asked Anya if she knew about this thing or has ever heard of that demon. She is a Character of all Time, literally, and I will never not be upset at how she got relegated to comic relief girlfriend

(Side note I think her and Dru would be good pals, they're both terrifyingly knowledgeable and think violence is fun (and are severely underutilized and contain so much character and possibility that the (predominantly male) writers just....didn't feel the need to expand on))

Also the fact that they saw Cordy, Anya, and Spike as like, replacements for each other and interchangeable based on the fact they were sarcastic and bitchy and clever, sucks. I get archetypes and characters filling roles but all of them were reduced to comic relief or the girlfriend or both (though yes Spike did get a way expanded arc once they decided what they wanted to do with him, and lookee he's the male character of the trio we're discussing)

Before your stupid boyfriend came along, you belonged to Sam. You didn't have anyone else to spend your time with, so you'd hang out with Sam. The two of you would watch movies together, play video games, smoke in his bedroom, and sometimes he'd bring you to parties with him.

You might have been oblivious to your stepbrother's feelings towards you, but to everyone else it was plain to see. Sam Monroe had a huge, embarrassing, shameful crush on his step sibling. To make matters even worse, you were now going out with his bully.

Going to the local college meant seeing many of the same faces from high school. You met Sam's bully at one of the parties Sam forced you to go to, ironically enough. The guy is tall, blonde, and more muscle than brains. Sam can't stand the guy. He's just some pretty-boy douchebag that gets whatever he wants with a flash of those pearly teeth. Sam never expected you were stupid enough to fall for it.

It was bad enough that you were dating the guy who made Sam's high school career a living hell, but the fact that he was the complete opposite of what Sam is made him angry. Of course you'd never go for a guy like Sam when you had a meat-head supermodel vying for your attention.

Sam hated it, but he knew he couldn't do anything about it. Even though Sam doesn't get bullied anymore, the guy could still kick his ass if he ever tried to confront him. So for weeks, Sam endured the torture of watching his step-sibling/crush fall head over heels for the worst guy he knows.

Sam reached his breaking point after a long night of hearing bed-rocking and moaning through his bedroom wall. At first, he only heard your moans and he thought you were masturbating. Like the pervert he is, decided to do the same while listening to you. His erection immediately softened when he heard a familiar voice through the wall.

Anya Jenkins + Being like a moth to a flame (Self-destructive)

No you don't understand, I'm actually making myself sick thinking about Anya Jenkins' character arc. LISTEN so many of us love Faith and we talk about how self-destructive Faith is but I haven't seen anyone talk about Anya's self-destructive path yet. In s3 she's SO UPSET that she's lost her powers. She loses them in The Wish (3x09) and then in Doppelgangland (3x16) she's STILL begging for her powers back. D'Hoffryn tells her "Do not ask again." so I assume she's spent every episode between this one desperately asking to get her powers back. And all throughout this episode she maintains that she'll get them back for herself if D'Hoffyrn won't help. Then when we see her in The Prom (3x20) she's not looking for her powers anymore. I mean, outwardly she's claiming that she's trying to get them back, but her actions show otherwise. She's continuing to go to school. She's looking for a date to the prom. It seems she's resigning herself to mortal life again, and trying to acclimate.

But I think her interest in Xander is more than that if you look deeper. For 1,000 years Anya brought death and destruction and vengeance upon the men she witnessed hurt women. Her very last (failed) mission, the entire reason she came to Sunnydale, was to enact vengeance on Xander for Cordelia. Anya's attraction to Xander isn't random and it isn't just because he's a main character in this show we're all watching. She's just lost everything about who she is, everything she's believed in and done and worked for. I honestly don't think this is about Anya getting a crush because she's suddenly experiencing teenage feelings again the way the show seems to want us to think it is based on the dialogue (3x21 Graduation Day Part 1). Or at least, if that's part of it, that's not all this is. (The show dialogue also tells us for 4 seasons that Anya is "like this" because she's "newly human" but then we learn in 7x05 Selfless that Anya's always been like this.) So I don't think this is about Anya liking Xander. I think she's self-destructing. Anya's too smart, too protective of herself and her own well-being when she wants to be, and she's seen too much of men's wrongdoing for me to accept this was accidental or unintentional or the result of a tiny crush.

She's spiraling, hurting. She's drawn to him like a moth to a flame. Out of every guy in Sunnydale, from Anya's pov, this is the ONE GUY guaranteed to hurt her, the ONE GUY in Sunnydale she knows for a fact "deserved" vengeance enacted against him (based on everything Anya and Vengeance Demons believe in) ...and SHE GOES STRAIGHT TOWARD HIM.

And then she catches feelings. Despite herself, despite Anya canonically admitting that she was just planning to use and lose Xander (6x18 Entropy) she falls in love with him. And with that, she starts to actually gain other things in her life. Other reasons to stop self-destructing. Anya gets a job and she loves it! "I'm a working gal!" she says. "I have a place in the world now." (5x06 Family). She develops hobbies and interests. She loves the fact that she's an American now. She's obsessed with capitalism. She's a member of the Scooby gang. And she starts making other changes as well. Anya says, "I mean, I for one didn't want to start my day with a slaughter. Which really just goes to show how much I've grown!" (5x08 Shadow) And she's so distraught about losing Joyce. And she misses Buffy when Buffy dies. Despite all the death Anya's caused, she has reasons to view it as horrible now. And she's so in love with Xander. Her entire speech to him in 5x11 Triangle asking him not to leave, the wedding vows she wrote him, she initially pursued Xander at a dark time in her life when she was in a bad headspace and now she's so in love and she's finally SO HAPPY.

And then Xander leaves her at the altar. Anya pursued Xander knowing full well what he could do to her, how severely he could hurt her. She went after Xander not in spite of him being the one man in Sunnydale guaranteed to destroy her, but BECAUSE of it. Anya went after Xander because she had nothing left to lose and she wanted to be hurt, she wanted to keep spiraling further into the path of self-destruction. Only it didn't happen. Through her relationship with Xander, Anya regained a purpose. She regained a will to live. And then he left. She got what she initially wanted, at the exact wrong time: only after she had once again gained things she was scared to lose.

Anya Jenkins, former vengeance demon, wished Xander Harris would hurt her. And she paid dearly for that wish.
