S3D8 Part 2: We could die a thousand times

Summary: Ms O’Ready and Karl need a break, can they catch one?

Warnings: A little sexy sex.

"I asked you a question," demanded Flint, shaking one of his fists at Logan.  This new found courage had him amped up on adrenaline and dizzy with rage.  He would have thought them all mad, high on some new drug, had it not been for another version of Weissman walking in and firing some kind of energy weapon.  It had been quite a strange day.

Several pulses of light appeared behind Flint, charging the air with electricity.  O'Ready found her hair lifting from her shoulders as if she's just touched a Van de Graaff generator, (one of those metal orbs you touch and it makes your hair stick up).   

Karl made a comment about her looking like a dandelion. O'Ready narrowed her eyes and wrinkled her nose.  She was in no mood for jokes at least until she was free from these time jumps. As the lights in the kitchen dimmed, Flint turned around to find he was surrounded by half a dozen individuals wearing long plastic overcoats and reflective masks that hid their features.

"Over here," called out Logan.  He waved one of his hands and snapped his fingers at the individuals who in the process of cleaning up Flints room.  One of them was wrapping up the dead body of Weissman whilst another was scanning the newly burnt unconscious body of the current version of the Doctor. Flint found himself being strong armed into another room whilst, much to his protest. One of the time agents presented themselves to Logan.  "The room will be clean in a few moments," she said, "What do we do with the surviving witness?  If we let him go he'll just set these events in motion again."

"Time travel is a tricky business, Rookie.  If we don't let things play out, O'Ready and my Pa will end up in a different time line and this conversation won't ever take place.  The fact that we're talking means we leave Flint and Weissman's memories intact and they go on to create their experiments.  Both of them will meet their ends.  One in the future and one in the past.  It has a poetry to it, does it not?" The young cadet nodded in agreement.  "Very well, Sir.  Do any of you need any assistance?"  She looked down to O'Ready. "Ma'am.  Are you okay?" O'Ready was lost in Logan's features and wasn't really paying much attention to anyone least of all someone from the future. "Ma'am?" 

Logan assured the rookie that everything was fine.  O'Ready's wound was already healed, leaving just a small red mark.   "I'll be taking her home," he said, "We could both do with a change of clothes and some food.   Have Nova speak to Karl.  The poor guy has been through some rough times."  Logan saluted the rookie and then twisted the ruby setting on his ring counter clockwise.  Both her and O'Ready vanished in a burst of violet light.

The sick feeling in his guts reminded him of that time he'd ate under cooked shrimp.  Gods that was a long night on the toilet.  Threes rolls and one had to be kept in the fridge.  He'd never touched shrimp again. The draft of fresh air was certainly helping with his emotions.  Deep breath in, hold for four.   Breathe out for four.  A figure crept beside him, standing just a few feet away as if they were waiting for permission to come closer. "What can I do for you?  Asked Karl.  Could they remove the smell of burnt flesh or the screams that are ringing in my ears, he wondered.  Did such tech exist in the future?

Nova reached into her pocket, producing a small folded piece of paper.  "I know you've been through a lot these last few days but I have one more jump for you.  I can send you right now but you must take this and head to the location.  No delay.  Do you understand?"  Nova took a step forward. Karl looked down.  A pink piece of paper was being waved in front of his nose.  Did she want him to smell it?  No that would be silly.  

'Get your head out of your arse,' said his inner voice. He took the paper, carefully unfolding it as if any wrong move would cause it to crumble into dust. The black ink was in his own hand writing. It mentioned a location and a time jump eight months after he and O'Ready had first gotten involved with Flint's time machine. After some mental calculation this would take him nearly eleven years into the future from his current location. What did he have to lose?

"Sure why not, "he said. Karl rubbed his eyes, causing them to water.  He just wanted this nightmare to be over. "Before you go, I'll need a tiny sample of your DNA. We need to lock down the weapon that Weissman used. I understand from the report that she attempted to fire it in Greece. I promise it wont hurt it's just a simple scan."

"And Flint?" 

"He's been sedated for now.  Things will continue as normal.  He will still invent time travel now that he knows it works.  In a strange way it's because of you and O'Ready. Things will play out as they're supposed too, ending for him in the town hall." Nova took the scan. It was brief and painless. "Are you ready now, Sir?" Karl shrugged his shoulders.  "Go for it." He closed his eyes, gripping the paper tightly.

A flash of thunder was followed by a large rumble.  The heavy downpour had closed the evening market due to flooding.  Even in the future, climate change was still an ongoing issue. O'Ready, fresh from her shower, wrapped the gown around her breasts, folding her arms as she stared out over the vast city and its rainbow of florescent lights.  These twilight hours were certainly the perfect time to view the city - a city that slept with one eye open. She wasn't sure how long she was going to stay.  Maybe a week or a month.  It's not like it would matter when she could return at any point in time. Logan patted the black sheets.  

"Come to bed, my love. I have strawberries to share with you. Come. Eat." O'Ready climbed onto the bed, pulling the sheets down to Logan's knees.  His naked form was flawless.  She couldn't help but pause and stare before she slithered on top of him, opening the front of the dressing gown and exposing herself for him. "Pass me one of those large strawberries," said O'Ready, reaching for the ceramic bowl on the pillow to Logan's right. Logan happily obliged and placed it between her teeth. The strawberry rolled over his lips before he sank he teeth in.  He pushed up with his hips, allowing his stiff wet cock to glide into her with the greatest of ease. "Aww now I need another one."  O'Ready playfully pouted as she finished off the last of the strawberry.  She positioned herself upright, resting her palms on his sculpted chest. Logan picked up another and this time he placed it over his open mouth. Again he gave a thrust upwards much to O'Ready's pleasure. This time it was O'Ready who bit into the strawberry. The mix of saliva and juice was a heady concoction of lust; she could already feel the heat which started in her groin spread throughout her body. She wanted to be devoured, every inch of her covered in his bite, his mark. They both bit down on the third strawberry, O'Ready's teeth nipping at Logan's upper lip.  A soft groan escaped from her mouth as she bucked her hips. "I want you to pop like warm champagne but not until we've emptied that bowl." There was still eight strawberries left. She took a fourth strawberry and teasingly ran it over her nipples.  Logan shuddered as he watched O'Ready bring the strawberry to her lips and gently poke the the tip with her tongue. He lifted his head of the pillow, eager to take a bite but it was just out of reach.

O'Ready finished of the fruit in a rather messy fashion, allowing bits of the flesh to fall freely on to Logan's bare chest. She couldn't help but let her mind wander to various other food types and the many games they could play together.  They were gonna need a bigger bowl.

A roll thunder passed overhead. Karl had been fortunate that the heavens didn't open until he'd entered the diner. The aroma of bacon made his guts grumble in anticipation. he took a stool at the counter and waited for the waitress to pour him a coffee; black with no sugar.  After a round of small talk came a small bout of silence as Karl pondered on the meaning of the note and to why he was here. "We're still serving breakfast." The waitress smiled waiting for Karl to answer.  "You don't want to miss out on our famous scrambled eggs and sweet waffles, all served with bacon and maple syrup." The door to the diner opened. 

Another customer coming in from the cold. Karl turned his head and watched as a woman wrestled with her umbrella, which had turned inside out. In her frustration she tossed it onto the floor and headed for one of the empty stools. "Hi Barbs," she called out to the waitress, "Can you believe this weather? I've already been soaked once today and I'll tell you if it keeps up I'm staying in tomorrow. To hell with the run." The waitress slid over a menu to the new customer. "The runs tomorrow? Well that's came around quick.  Doesn't time fly." Karl agreed with the last statement. "Will you be ordering the usual?" she asked, "I have some bacon ready to be served if you’re interested?" 

The new customer removed her brown overcoat and placed it on the stool next to her.  She gave a sideways glance towards Karl and coughed slightly. "Oh he hasn't ordered yet. Came in just before you. Not a regular either."

Karl broke free from his wandering mind and apologised for being rude. He introduced himself, giving his full name as Nicolaus Karlovski. "But you can just call me Karl," he said. The brunette next to him extended her hand. "How odd.  You prefer to be known by your surname. I'm Kitty and this wonderful Chef is Barbs. She makes the finest food in lower east side. You just can't go wrong with breakfasts. You won't be wanting anything to eat until supper." 

Karl hadn't eaten properly in days and so he ordered a double helping of bacon and eggs. Four waffles would be enough. He wasn't a pig. Barbs loved a customer with a healthy appetite. "Coming right up, she said, as she poured Kitty a fresh mug of coffee.

The three conversed over food and several mugs of coffee. Customers came and went over the next few hours and by four pm the diners usual busy period quietened down to the low murmur of Karl and Kitty who were discussing the continuity errors of 80's action movies. "You know you could come for a run with me tomorrow. it's not far, just a few miles. I tend to spend most of it walking but it's good to get out, ya know." Kitty finished off her final coffee of the day and looked at her watch.  "If you're interested I could give you my number. Hey Barbs! You have any blank receipts lying around?" Barbs slid over her notepad.  Just tear a page from that."

Kitty flicked open the notepad. Affixed to the side was a small pen via a piece of string. A few scribbles later and Karl had her number. What was most extraordinary was that the colour of the paper was pink. Karl was almost sure it would match the one in his pocket. "So tomorrow then," said Karl, his chest expanding with new filled hope. "Tomorrow. We'll have a chat after the run about how Cheers is the greatest American sitcom of all time and perhaps why no one calls you Nick. You look like a Nick." Kitty brushed Karl's fringe away from his eyes. "Finish your coffee and ask Barbs about her pecan pie for take out. It's divine." With that, Kitty put on her coat, removed some cash form her purse and bid the two goodbye.

Karl watched her turn the corner and vanish out of sight. Barb coughed. "You can pay tomorrow. Go and catch her up. She won't have gone far." The rain and thunder had stopped, leaving a soft haze and crispness in the air. Somewhere on the streets of New York a new story was about to begin.  Nothing is ever by chance.

CARD-SKIMMING HACKER GROUP HIT 17K DOMAINS—AND COUNTING

YOU MAY NOT recognize the name Magecart, but you’ve seen its impact. A set of sophisticated hacking groups, Magecart has been behind some of the bigger hacks of the past few years, from British Airways to Ticketmaster, all with the singular goal of stealing credit card numbers. Think of them as the ATM skimmers of the web. And thanks to poor security hygiene, they’ve managed to hit 17,000 domains in the past few months alone.

A new report from threat detection firm RiskIQ details how Magecart hackers have found a way to scan Amazon S3 buckets—cloud repositories that hold data and other backend necessities for sites and companies—for any that are misconfigured to allow anyone with an Amazon Web Services account to not just read their contents but write to them, implementing whatever changes they want. Like, say, inserting code that steals credit card numbers from ecommerce sites.

The Hack

RiskIQ has tracked the activity as far back as early April; it first noticed the technique after seeing several internet supply chain companies get compromised in May. Rather than the typical targeted attacks that Magecart groups had deployed in the past, though, these turned out to be part of a new “spray and pray” technique. The Magecart hackers were casting the widest possible net, altering the code of countless sites that had no ecommerce function at all, in hopes of catching enough sites that do process credit cards to make its efforts worthwhile.

“It’s still ongoing as we’re talking right now,” says RiskIQ threat researcher Yonathan Klijnsma. “All these guys are doing is just en masse trying to find S3 buckets that have been misconfigured. And their skimmers are getting everywhere.”

Specifically, once the hackers find a properly misconfigured S3 bucket, they run a scan to identify any JavaScript files. Because the bucket’s permissions let anyone write code to it, the attackers simply tack their Magecart malware onto the file, then overwrite the script that had been there. Imagine if a bank were to leave incontrovertible instructions to its tellers on a chalkboard. If you also have chalk, and can find a little room, you can cause a lot of trouble.

Who’s Affected?

It’s a more complicated question than it sounds. The easiest answer is: 17,000 domains and counting, including, RiskIQ says, some that are among the 2,000 biggest sites in the world.

But many of those sites don’t process credit card transactions at all, rendering the Magecart code moot. It's also unclear how many actual S3 buckets are affected, since multiple domains can link back to the same one. So the actual answer, the one that matters, sits in the center of the Venn diagram formed by “domains linked to aggressively misconfigured S3 buckets” and “domains that process credit card payments.” Or more to the point, anyone unfortunate enough to pay for something on one of those sites before the attack is resolved.

Which could take awhile. RiskIQ is working with Amazon to alert the affected administrators to their exposure, but wrangling 17,000 domains takes time. As does making the necessary backend adjustments.

How Bad Is This?

The issue of compromised ecommerce sites, however many there actually are, will have obvious ramifications. But the bigger problem stems from the method of attack itself.

Amazon S3 buckets are secure by default. Companies run into trouble when they actively change those permissions, either somewhere in the development process or when they hand off cloud work to a third-party contractor. Those Amazon S3 bucket misconfigurations have caused plenty of problems before. The fallout, though, was usually limited to the exposure of personally identifiable information, huge databases of usernames and passwords and birthdays and Social Security numbers that wind up for sale, or for free, on the dark web and elsewhere. That’s because those goofs typically give read permission to interlopers, but not the ability to write code. The Magecart hackers figured out a way to scan for misconfigurations that do both—and now they know 17,000 vulnerable domains.

“This is a whole new level of misconfiguration,” says Klijnsma. “These buckets are pretty much owned by anybody who talks to it, which is on a different scale, a different type of data leakage. Pretty much anybody can do anything in those S3 buckets, and the reach of those is quite big.”

The Magecart hackers have a singular focus: credit card skimming. But it’s not hard to imagine a group that thinks bigger, or at least with a more anarchical bent. With the same technique, you could append all sorts of malware to the same sites.

Amazon has developed tools to help its cloud customers forestall this type of attack, including an essentially one-click "block public access" option that it rolled out last fall. Tweak that one setting, and this problem goes away. But clearly, demonstrably, thousands of domains still haven’t locked down their infrastructure, with potentially devastating consequences.

How long have you been a fan of One Direction?   i think it’s going to be four years this march….jesus

Who is your favorite fic author?   tashie togetherwecouldbealright, and i’m also very partial to 100percentsassy and gloriaandrews’ fics.

What is your favorite fic?   THIS IS TOO HARD i don’t know if it’s even possible to just have one favorite, but the first thing that popped into my head was be my little good luck charm.

When did you start writing?   long enough ago that i can’t really remember, i learned how to write at 5/6 so probably not long after that. i think i wrote a very lengthy poem about spring when i was 7, so definitely by then.

What was your favorite fic to write and why?   in all honesty, the general process of writing is extremely painful for me..but probably run away home, partly because it was about horses and i really love horses, and partly because i’d like to think i improve a little with every fic i write and i ended up really liking the character dynamics i created there, especially lilo and h/l.

How and where do you find inspiration?   all sorts of media, usually. i’m very, very bad at coming up with original ideas (working on it, though!), but when i’m watching a movie or tv show, i immediately start thinking of what harry and louis would be like with that kind of dynamic or how they would fit into that environment. it’s been movies, tv shows, a gif…the one i’m writing now was also inspired by a movie, and the one i want to write next is set in a tv show environment.

Are any of your stories influenced by personal experience?     i guess it depends. i’d like to think i’m a decent baker, so i drew on that experience when writing leave it to the breeze, and i’ve been a huge horse nerd since age four, which came in useful when writing run away home. i was also in a long-distance relationship, and i’m asexual, which were both key elements of wait up i’m coming home (i just almost forgot that i wrote that one, lol). so i actually guess i do, even though i was ready to say not really.

How do you get over writer’s block?   i don’t think i really get writer’s block, i just get lazy. usually it’s because i’ve come to the end of what i initially had planned for the plot, so the only way i move myself forward when that happens is sitting down and forcing myself to plan. if i’m just feeling like i don’t want to write, i try to use time management techniques (like pomodoro, i.e. 25 minutes of focused writing and 5 minutes of pointlessly browsing the internet to reward mysel) or, if it’s an ongoing thing, i try to leave off in a place i know i’ll want to continue the next day.

On average, how long does it take to write a fic?   all of my longer 1d fics were started/written as part of nanowrimo, which really helps move things along. for the monster fics i always seem to end up doing i’d say maybe two to three months of consistent writing. the issue, and the reason i literally post one fic a year, is that i’m not consistent, lol.

How often do you sit down to write? What does your ideal work setting look like?   if i’m in the ‘groove’, ideally i like to write every day. it just helps keep everything fresh in my memory so i know where i’m picking up, and also helps get everything done faster. the only thing i really need is complete silence/white noise. i used to be really particular about where i wrote, but i’ve learned to be more flexible as my life got busier, so now i don’t really mind - i’ve written at work, at school, at coffee shops, bus stops, in the library, all over the place. if i am at home, though, i like to have a cup of tea while i write.

Pick 3 things that are absolutely necessary to make a good story!  

characters!! nothing works for me if the characters aren’t good or, in the case of fic, if they’re ooc.

character growth/development

things like grammar, syntax, punctuation, capitalisation, paragraph breaks. i’m unfortunately a very picky reader, so what a story looks like plays a big role for me.

What do you like most about the writing process?   i really love how stories change from what you intend them to be. when i start i’ll usually have a basic outline of the plot and characters, but the story kind of takes on a life of its own and new scenes/plot points/character motivations come into my head as i’m writing and often take the story in a different direction, so i end up with something totally new! i also love the rush of excitement after i post the fic. i usually go to sleep right after so i can wake up to reactions, whatever they might be, haha.

What is your favorite genre/tag to write? in my early fanfic days i used to really enjoy writing angst, but 9 times out of 10 it doesn’t work with h/l. when i’m writing about them i just like all sorts of romance-y stuff, especially them getting together, so in terms of tags i guess i’d say friends to lovers.

What kind of scene do you find hardest to write? Easiest?   hardest is probably action/scenes where a lot of things happen in quick succession, i struggle with pacing those properly. smut is really hard, too. easiest are dialogue-heavy scenes, both friendly and romantic fond banter, and specifically lilo friendship scenes, haha.

Do you write chronologically?   yes. if there’s a scene i’m really looking forward to writing, i plot it out in detail and use it as motivation to write faster so i can get to it.

What’s one thing that not a lot of people know about you, and you feel comfortable sharing?   i feel like i put everything really personal on the internet to be honest, haha. but i feel like the most interesting thing about me is the fact that i work at an escape room, so i literally lock people in rooms and then spy on them through a camera for a living.

Are you currently working on something? Can we have a little preview?   i am! i’ve talked about this a little on my blog, it’s an au based on the movie sweet home alabama. it’s a huge mess right now, but here’s a bit i like:

“I’m not sure I believe you,” says Louis, half-grinning. “I’ve moved on, Harry, the best that I could. I’d love it if you disappeared tomorrow, sure, but you being here isn’t—I don’t know. It’s not breaking my heart in two, or whatever Liam would have you believe.”

He avoids Harry’s eyes as he says it.

“But—actually. Since you are here, I wanna show you something.”

Harry blinks at the sudden change in demeanour, and has to scramble to get up and follow Louis out of the door. He’s walking up the stairs briskly, brushing his hand over the picture frames as he goes in what looks like an unconscious habit.

Harry catches up with him on the landing upstairs. He’s standing right in front of the white door that Harry tries to pretend isn’t there, looking at it with his arms wrapped around himself.

“What…” Harry starts, looking him over. He looks small, but determined, standing firm, with his chin tipped up.

“You know what,” he says, quiet.

Harry shakes his head. He, too, hugs himself, needing something to keep him together just in case.

“You don’t have to do this,” he says.

“I want to,” Louis replies. “It’s been too long. I just—I didn’t want to get rid of it without you. That’s just stupid, isn’t it.”

By the time Alvi fled, the Awans had been under investigation by various federal agencies for at least three months. The FBI was sufficiently attuned to the Awans’ criminality that its agents went to the trouble of chasing Alvi to the airport. If she didn’t fill out the required form, she should have been arrested for the currency violation. Is it possible that, rather than arresting her, federal agents instructed her to complete the form on the spot? Still awaiting Senate confirmation is Jessie Liu, nominated by President Trump in June. Meanwhile, Steven Wasserman, Representative Wasserman Schultz’s brother, has been an assistant U.S. attorney in the office for many years. I have seen no indication that he has any formal role in the case, notwithstanding some cyberspace speculation to the contrary. What is clear, however, is that the office is low-keying the Awan prosecution.

The indictment itself is drawn very narrowly. All four charges flow from a financial-fraud conspiracy of short duration. Only Imran Awan and his wife are named as defendants. There is no reference to Awan-family perfidy in connection with the House communications system.

Of course, we’re sure it’s probably nothing but at least one former U.S. Attorney says “there is something very strange going on here.”
