Reading the Iliad, Book 20 thoughts

This is my first time ever reading it and I know next to nothing abt greek mythology so if I interpret anything wrong by all means pls correct me

Im reading the Robert Fagles translation

The manner in which ppl were dying in this book actually had me balling my face up

This whole book was pissing me off

So Zeus calls a meeting between ALL the gods, like every single one

Zeus says "ok guys, you can all go down there, pick your sides, and help them fight. I won't stop you."

UMM LIKE THEY HAVENT BEEN DOING THAT SHIT THIS WHOLE TIME?

So everyone speeds off to the war

On the side of the Greeks, we have Hera, Athena, Poseidon, Hephaestus, and Hermes. On the Trojan side, we have Apollo, Artemis, their mother Leto, Ares, Xanthus (whoever that is lmao), and Aphrodite.

Achilles steps out on the battlefield and people start pissing themselves

And he starts looking for Hector bc revenge and all that

This is where the funniest part of the book happens (to me at least) Apollo takes the form of one of Priam, Lycaon, and he goes to speak with Aeneas.

And basically, he says "What happened to all that shit you were talking that one time? You said you'd face Achilles man to man so now's your time."

Aeneas goes "Bro why? Why are you trying to make me fight Achilles? He's super angry rn and plus I already fought him once and he chased me😔"

LMAO APOLLO ARE YOU EVEN ON THE TROJAN SIDE FR BC YOU KEEP GETTING THOSE MOTHERFUCKERS KILLED

He's the only one actively killing his own side💀

Anyway I'm very surprised that Aeneas was able to outrun Achilles of all people but Zeus was helping him escape so

We know Aeneas isn't gonna win, Apollo knows it, Achilles knows it, even Aeneas knows it so please stop wtf???

Apollo tells him "You're that son of god too, a more important god than Achilles' mother. You got this👍🏾😁."

Tho Thetis is wayyyyy older than Aphrodite so while Thetis is a minor goddess she still kinda has the upper hand

So now Aeneas has to fight Achilles

Cut to Queen Hera and she's kinda at a loss on what to do about that whole thing. Aeneas isn't fated to die at this moment but Achilles also cannot die either rn soooo.

Poseidon speaks up and tells Hera to just leave it alone and that their side is stronger than Apollo's. If they block Achilles or keep him from fighting then they will do something.

He, Hera, and Athena leave to go sit within the fortress of Heracles. Ares and Apollo join them too.

Lmao so Aeneas and Achilles come face to face and Achilles is like "Who told you that you could fight me🤨?"

So it's not looking good

Achilles tells him that he won't even get the same glory from killing him that a son of Priam would get. Then he brings up how Aeneas ran from him that one time

Turns out that when Aeneas ran from Achilles he actually ran to Lyrnessus which ended up leading Achilles there too, resulting in the town being sacked and the women being enslaved.

Re-remembering why Achilles needs to die

But I wouldn't wanna get chased by Achilles either, that's some scary shit

Aeneas goes on one of those "Here's my entire family line starting from the Mesozoic era." rants

I did find out he was related to Ganymede (yes that one) though I forgot exactly how

Anyway, they start fighting. Aeneas throws his spear at Achilles, and Achilles is fully excepting it to pierce his shield but it was literally made by a god for a demi-god so the sper only manages to get through the first two layers of it

Achilles throws his spear which goes clean through Aeneas's shield but does not hit him

Aeneas picks up this huge rock (Homer says it's so big that not even two men could have lifted it) and gets ready to throw it

Poseidon shuts that shit down there and then bc again, neither one can die here

Poseidon says that he feels bad for Aeneas and that Apollo hyping his fucking head up shouldn't be what gets him killed.

THANK YOU Apollo is damn near killing everybody

So Poseidon pulls down this mist over Achilles' eyes and gets Aeneas tf out of dodge

"You need to stop right now" - Poseidon

"My bad" - Aeneas🧍🏾‍♂️

The mist is lifted from Achilles' eyes and he says something about how the god are cheating

Achilles then launched into a very large killing spree. He puts his spear through one man's head, causing his brain to splatter the inside of his helmet, spears another through one ear and out the other, he cuts someone's liver out, and slices a man's head off so fucking cleanly that the bone marrow from his neck drips out.

I would never fight any war knowing Achilles was on the opposing team

In the middle of all that Achilles kills Polydorus who is the youngest son of Priam, I believe who, naturally is Hector's brother.

Hector sees this and he does not like that at all so he starts making his way toward Achilles

When they meet Hector says that any battle they have is up to the gods and so because of that Hector has a chance of winning.

No you don't

Hector throws his spear at Achilles, only for it to be knocked away by Athena

Achilles tries to attack Hector but Apollo shrouds him in a mist so that Achilles can't see him

"You're lame and the only reason you haven't been killed by me is bc you have a god helping you"- Achilles

Honestly that's why MOST ppl haven't died in this story (except Patroclus ig lmao)

Then Achilles tells Hector that since he cant kill him right now, instead he's going to kill anyone he can catch.

ACHILLES IS SUCH A FUCKING SUPER VILLAIN BRO😭 evil ass

And he does that
