The Invasion

(These are pictures from a day trip to Ft. Hays State Park.)
This will probably be my last blog for a bit. We have only 2 weeks left here and then we’ll be traveling. We are so excited to see the countdown begin. The city park where we are at is thinning out. After this weekend, there will probably only be 4 of the 10 spots filled in our section of the park. DigiKey even feels quieter. With so many workampers leaving, things are busier though and the offer of overtime is starting to come back. This last week we arrived on Monday to our “super bay” to find 2 other girls there. Both said they were assigned to it. One only works Sunday-Tuesday so we hadn’t seen her and the other one had been on vacation and said she was promised that bay when she returned. So we figured it was only a matter of time before we got the call to move elsewhere. It came around our “lunchtime” and our supervisor told us there’d been a mix-up and that we were supposed to go to KG to work. That was the bay that we had been at for a day and a half that I didn’t like. So, grudgingly, we moved back there. The first day was a disaster. There was stuff all over the place and it’s not a big area anyway. A guy told me what they call that bay but it’s something I can’t repeat! Thankfully on Tuesday when we returned, the product had been put away and things were fairly organized and so we did some more organizing to make it more user friendly for us and the day went fine. The rest of the week, we remained busy and were able to keep the bay how we like it- clutter-free. It’s only a 2 row (4 shelf) bay but with that comes a small work space and a feeling of claustrophobia at times. Steve and I survived the week and assume we will be there for the next 2 weeks but I would not place a bet on it! I have learned that at DigiKey.
I can’t believe we waited so long to do it, but we finally bought a small humidifier for the RV. We really should have gotten one when we were in S. Texas. I remember looking for a used one but never found one that would work for us. It’s amazing how much water can fill the reserve in a short amount of time and it’s not especially humid right now. It has been raining more lately which is why we finally got one on Amazon. I think it’s one of those “must haves” for RVers. You think you won’t need one, but you will. I’m doubting we’ll need it much in Arizona but even there you can have those days…
One week later: We survived another week, but we didn’t survive the Asian Beetle. Last year we got an infestation of the stink bug and it just about drove me to drink! I would wake up and find one of those nasty bugs staring at me from the ceiling and it’d scare me to death. I had read plenty about people having the same type of situations with this ladybug like insect. For those of you who are not familiar (and be glad) with the Asian Beetle, it looks like a ladybug only it’s orange instead of red. It loves to find warmth to escape the cooler temperatures. Like the stink bug, if you kill one, it’ll leave a liquid/smell behind that draws its “family members” to it and after a while you can have a real issue with them. I have heard of people having hundreds of them and finding them everywhere…in the slides, in the rolled up awnings, in the A/C, etc. So I’m not exaggerating when I say, you don’t want them even if they look cute. I started seeing them about a week ago and told Steve. I tried to express the seriousness of this situation to Steve and I don’t think he quite got it. After we started seeing them more and more, inside and out, I think he finally got the picture. One day, they were swarming. I was out walking Aspen and when I got back to the RV, I was afraid to go to the door because they were everywhere. I grabbed the broom and started to brush them off the door so we could dash inside but as soon as I’d brush them off, they’d come right back. They were even attacking me. I finally gave up and just picked up Aspen and we ran inside. Some came in with me…on me…but we lived. I jokingly told Steve we might have to call our supervisor and tell her we couldn’t make it to work that day because we were being held hostage by beetles and couldn’t leave our RV. It was really awful. The next day, I told Steve, I couldn’t take another infestation and so he called the Express Pro (our employers) office and asked if we could move to another RV park in town. They said “yes” and so yesterday, we got up early and packed up as quickly as we could and moved to the other park before we had to report to work. They said they had some of the beetles there too but we really haven’t seen too many. Now I’m not saying we don’t still have a problem with them. I’m sure we brought plenty with us even though Steve did everything possible to leave them in St. Hilaire. There was just no way of getting rid of them completely with how they like to hide in places. Today we bought some spray that is supposed to kill them and Steve just got through spraying inside and out. Hopefully that will take care of the situation and we will stop seeing them soon. In the meantime, we just use our hand vac to sweep them up. We only have 1 more week here and I don’t want to bring the problem with us! The park we moved to is nice. We actually have WIFI (thus the ability to write this blog without wanting to scream) and cable and a nice big site. We are maybe 2 miles from Digikey, another plus. This is where we wanted to be in the first place, but it was full when we arrived. Now that winter is approaching, spots have opened up. We’ll enjoy it for a week!
We had our 3-month evaluation on Friday. They showed us our pick averages and repick numbers. Lisa was very happy with our numbers and so were we for newbies that keep getting moved around to different bays.
Aspen was supposed to have a grooming appointment today. We drove to Grand Forks and dropped him off. I got a phone call about 30 minutes later from the groomer saying he’d had an attack and fallen over and she was afraid that grooming him would stress him out too much and she wasn’t willing to take that chance. I tried to tell her that he has those from time to time but she was too traumatized and said she’d trim up his face and clip his nails but asked me to come get him. He has been having these “attacks” more. It’s hard to decide whether we should take him to the vet and hope there’s something they can do for him or just let him be. It’s so hard when you are a full timer and don’t have a vet who knows your pet.
Lastly, we have decided to change our winter plan. I saw an ad on Workamper News of a job that sounded interesting. I wasn’t really looking for anything because I was looking forward to returning to Mesa Regal, but we decided it wouldn’t hurt to send our resume and see what happened. I figured the position had already been filled anyway. The next day, we got a response from the GM saying he’d like to talk to us so we called him and talked about the position and he offered it to us. We bounced it around for a day looking at the pros and cons but, in the end, we decided it was too good of an opportunity to pass up. Let me reiterate, we never see jobs like this offered in the winter, which is why we felt like we should put in our resume. We are working at a resort in Apache Junction which is still the Phoenix area. Two of the cons are it’ll be a longer drive to get to most of Madison’s softball games and we really prefer Mesa to AJ. It’s called Roadhaven Golf & Tennis Resort. It has around 1062 sites and they are owned by the residents. It has about all of the activities you would expect of a large Arizona resort: pickleball, 3 pools, crafts rooms, fitness room and exercise classes, etc. Our job will be to manage the hospitality office. We had to ask what that entailed but basically we will be dealing with people who are interested in the resort and either want a tour or have questions. We are responsible for finding volunteers to cover the office hours when we aren’t working it and we also will give prospective owners information they need in order to investigate properties for sale. We also will help the activities director setting up and tearing down for some of the major events. We will each work 25 hours/week and we are going to try to make sure we have volunteers for the days Madison has games so we don’t miss any. We will see how it works…we have until February to try to get it worked out anyway. I’m sure we’ll have some issues since we are “management” but we are going to give it a shot. This is the amazing part: they pay for ALL hours worked AND the site and all utilities are free. Unheard of for winter workamping jobs. We earn PTO as well. We have hopefully learned not to accept any job solely based on the money and we had to check ourselves, but the pros seemed to outweigh the cons on this one so we gave Cal-Am/Mesa Regal the bad news. We still start November 1.
So that ends our time at DigiKey and this blog post!

Prez Would Save Us Part 1: The Most Powerful Teen On Earth!

In 1973 Joe Simon tapped into a reality 45 years in the making. Jerry Grandanetti penciled the fever dream of the most powerful teen super team ever Prez Rickard: Teen President and Eagle Free: Chief of the FBI in the eponymously named PREZ by DC. In a problematically scripted frenzy for four dangerous and provocative issues we were treated to a vision of an America that is so on point, so on the nose, that it feels prophetic. Dealing with issues ranging from political corruption, wildlife conservation, gun control, and water rights it’s extremely relevant in all its slapstick glory. At the end of 2017 and our present political insanity two things stick out: Boss Smiley has won, but Prez would save us.
PREZ begins with the introduction of the titular character, the perfectly coifed blonde haired, blue-eyed 18 year-old head of the local stock car club whose winning time in the race is confused by a town full of clocks, none of which tells the time. One would think the count would remain the same regardless of when the time was set to, but it seems a metaphor for rural voter apathy. Prez Rickard’s concern is that if the clocks are wrong, how will they know when to vote? This is an echo that strikes deeply. In the 2016 election there was such a sense of inevitability, but it was time to vote and people should have known. Someone needed to set the clocks, to restore the truth of time. Prez fixed all the clocks in Steadfast. Prez would have saved us.

In chapter two we are introduced to Big City USA, a polluted and corrupt cesspit where trash is dumped into the rivers, the bribes the cops take are turned directly over to the administration, people can’t breathe from the smog and industrial waste, the people pay the government welfare for being poor, in essence the modern vision of politics controlled by business. In stark contrast to the conditions of Big City are the smiley faces, what we would now identify as the smiley emoji and more on that in a bit, plastered all over everything from buildings to people. We are taken to the capitol of Big City where youth led anti-corruption protests are savagely beaten by the police. Any of this sounding familiar yet?
Here we meet Boss Smiley, the meanest, most vicious man in the world and one of the most successful Mayors in America. Boss Smiley’s head is a smiley emoji and he is every corrupt politician incarnate. He is furious over the youth’s ability to vote and we are introduced to the plot point that the overwhelming voting power of the youth has passed an amendment for teens to be elected to the Senate. Boss Smiley is violent, utterly ruthless and uses the power of an advertizing agency run by a man named Misery who has plastered the Smiley face all over America. He has decided that since half the electorate is under 25 (Baby Boomers) they need to run a youth candidate. Prez is the man for the job.

Boss Smiley almost starts a forest fire as he declares he’s going to build a superhighway through the last undeveloped forest in America to Steadfast, stating that everyone will want to go to the hometown of the next President and the contract to build the road will, of course, go to a company Boss Smiley owns. It is put out by a young Native American Eagle Free who, in racist caricature, can speak to animals and attacks Boss Smiley to defend the habitat of his animal friends. The book takes a turn to the explicitly racist for a while as Eagle Free puts Prez through his Mighty Whitey paces, uncovering Boss Smiley’s corruption and triggering a sweep of progressive replacements of republicans and democrats. Prez wins on a campaign of Truth-and-Love.
And that’s all just Issue #1.
The rest of the comic is just as jam packed with eerily familiar happenings and commentary on politics as today. Issue #2 features a geo-political conflict with Russia using chess. It’s all allegory, of course. Chess pieces are used to commit terrorism, chess pieces are used as guards in what is the most traditionally superhero fare of the entire book. The important part of the issue is not commenting on the actually ongoing cyberwar we are presently engaged in with Russia, which it does by using electronic rays that paralyze the American chess champion, nor is it the scene of doves attacking at the command of Eagle Free. It’s the attempted assassination of Prez over a bill that he is putting forth to pass a comprehensive handgun ban.

Issue #3 Prez goes up against the Minutemen, an extreme right-wing militia that has been hoarding guns and counterfeiting one dollar bills because their leader claims to be the descendant of George Washington. The Minutemen are the extant conservative threat to the passing of actual gun control. They threaten that if any attempt is made to legislate their ‘inalienable right to bear arms’ they will rise up, they illustrate this by shooting a dwarf into the White House from a canon. Instead of a massacre between the militia and the army Prez agrees to fight the leader of the Minutemen one on one. The military conflict happens anyway, despite Prez winning a rigged duel. In the end Prez succeeds in passing comprehensive gun control, something we desperately need versus 2017’s year of ‘thoughts and prayers’.
While issue #4 features a werewolf diplomat and a Dracula without legs protesting climate change caused by a dam and canal system being built by America by way of assassinating the president and a biological weapon attack of rabies bats. It’s really a footnote for the time being until the inevitable conflicts break out over Nestle’s water extractivism. But that’s clearly a 2018 kind of problem. It ends with Eagle Free asking if Transylvania surrenders to American might will they spend money building it back up as we so frequently do with the vanquished. A different kind of bloodsucking perhaps? Ultimately it could have all been a metaphor for Israel, but then in today’s climate, with today’s events? Pretty much anything could be a metaphor for Israel.

How is the above even real?
PREZ was canceled abruptly and for “unknown reasons”(You Know Why). It would have been nice if it was because of the unceasing racism in the depiction of Eagle Free. It wasn’t. In the end, problematic though it may be, PREZ of 1973 tapped into some of the clearly structural issues involved in America, though it didn’t have time to do more than give us a brief overview and explain its premise. Youth Culture is able and willing to do the hard things and fix the hard problems and it will take a more radical and progressive stance than either party is currently fielding. This is a blueprint for the revolution we needed decades ago but never got. Prez would save us, if only we’d let him.

Tune in soon for ‘Prez Would Save Us Part 2: Corndog Girl vs Amazon’ where we talk about the 2016 Prez reboot.

11 Questions Meme
Borrowing this meme from @Aximili because I thought it looked interesting and the questions are really unique!
1. What’s your favourite poem if you have one? why is it your favourite?
That’s a hard one, because I don’t read a lot of poetry. It took a while to think of an answer, and what I finally settled on is so nerdy and not very cultured, but I’m going to have to go with the tapestry poem (“Listen, my child, to this story of dreams” and so on) from Nancy Drew: Message in a Haunted Mansion. It’s very nostalgic to me and I loved unravelling what all the symbolism in it means/how it pertains to the mystery. Maybe a bit of a lame answer, but it’s what I’m putting.
On the other end of the spectrum I also considered the Aeneid but 1) I’ve only read about half of it, 2) I’m not entirely sure it counts as a poem? And 3) sounds way too pretentious
2. If you could spend a lot of money on one thing right now - and its not something practical like paying off debts, or a house or car - what would it be? something purely for enjoyment.
Okay so assuming we’re not allowed to say charity” or “spend it on a friend” or w/e and can spend the money on something entirely unnecessary/selfish, I actually have a ready-prepared answer. I’ve been looking forwards for a long time to the Agents of Shield Season 4 Declassified Guide Book coming out (which it did on Tuesday) and yesterday I went to the Chapters here to see if they had it and turns out they don’t. No store in the city has it or even in Toronto, so it most likely hasn’t been shipped to the province (or even the country) yet. So I would use the money to order it to the store (which you can do but the price is not something I want to spend when I’m on a student budget #Firstworldproblems). Anyway I’ll probably just end up ordering it on Amazon or asking for it for Christmas or something.
3. Favourite plant and why?
That’s a really hard one but atm I’m thinking wisteria. I saw a ton of it in England and I love how it grows up buildings and drapes all over everything. It looks so old-timey and wonderful. The flowers are also the perfect colour.
4. When you’ve had a really long day and you’re super hungry, what do you crave?
Ohhhh gosh. I guess this really depends on the day? But cheese popcorn is always a safe answer.
5. A memorable dream you’ve had lately?
Well uh. I had a very memorable but questionable dream trilogy the past 3 nights all involving cast members from Agents of Shield. In the first dream, my favorite actress from that show sent me a postcard saying that she was writing a story on Google Docs and was going to share it with me. In the second dream, that actress and a bunch of others from the show were invited over to our house by my Dad for a dinner party and I was going to get to interview her. And in the third … another actor I really like was hit by a car and killed? It felt super real and I actually had to look him up online when I woke up to make sure he was okay.
6. What does your dream home look like? what type of building/size/location/what’s in it?
Okay, so notwithstanding cost and practicality and upkeep, I’d really really love to live in a heritage home, like say circa 1890 to 1915ish. Something late Victorian/Edwardian/Arts and Crafts style. Queen Anne style with a little turret would be THE BEST but that’s a little ambitious even for my dreams lol. I’d like it to be along one of those sleepy streets in a neighborhood that’s clearly been there for a long time so the trees are very tall and the branches arch over the road. Like you’re in a green tunnel with sunlight filtering down. And it’d have a little backyard and frontyard and two stories + a basement but not be too big. Like 1 or 2 bedrooms, living room, kitchen, bathroom, basement, that’s all I need. I imagine it either being made out of red brick, or wood painted some sort of pastel colour (white, light pink/blue/green, etc.)
I know it’s really tempting to be like “I would live in A CASTLE with 10 secret passageways and a hidden treasure!” but it’d honestly be so big and kind of creepy to be alone in it. But I wouldn’t say no to a small secret passageway in my imaginary house … like just a sliding panel or a boarded-off maid’s staircase or something. That’d be awesome.
The furnishings would be like, high-late Victorian or Edwardian. I really like them both, and while the Victorian appeals more to me aesthetically, the Edwardian would be easier to manage and clean. But it would have electricity, TV, computer, all those modern conveniences.
Something like the Painted Ladies in San Francisco would be ideal but to see some more feasible/local examples you can check out these pages here (which I helped set up a few summers ago *shameless self-plug*)
7. a household chore you actually enjoy?
That’s actually a fairly easy answer. I like doing the dishes, as in just loading/unloading the dishwasher. I find it kind of relaxing and therapeutic. Not saying I’d be jumping up and down to do them after I’ve had a long busy day and want to spend time doing something fun, but I don’t mind it. I also like sweeping. It feels kind of cathartic to gather up a whole bunch of dust and dirt into a pile and then throw it away.
8. who’s your favourite lesser-known music artist? which song and why?
This one’s pretty hard because a lot of what I listen to is fairly well-known pop (Taylor Swift, Kelly Clarkson, etc.) but I guess I’d go with Stan Rogers? He was a Canadian folk singer from the 70s /early 80s who unfortunately died in a plane crash. He sang a lot of songs relating to maritime life and Canadian history. My Mom introduced me to his work when I was in high school and I really like it. Some of my favorite songs of his are Mary Ellen Carter, Northwest Passage, Macdonnell on the Heights, Witch of the Westmoreland, and Barrett’s Privateers. I have Barrett’s Privateers pretty much memorized and sometimes sing it to annoy my sister, since it’s a pretty repetitive song. :P
9. what was ur favourite toy as a kid?
OH definitely my (creatively-named) killer whale. Just a typical plastic animal toy that came with a set of 5 or so others, but for whatever reason 3-4 y/o me really latched on to him, I guess because I love killer whales so much. I would sleep with him the same way most kids sleep with teddy bears or other soft stuffed animals. I remember my parents telling me he would chase my nightmares away. When I was 16 or so one of my dogs got into my room and chewed up his fins up a bit, but luckily I rescued him in time. I actually brought him with me to Uni, both now and when I went to Exeter, and he’s sitting on a pile of my books on my shelf right now.
10. your ideal conditions for falling asleep?
Really dark and quiet. Not too hot or too cold. Comfy blankets. Nothing troubling my mind, preferably some sort of fictional scenario to run over in my head (like involving characters or ships or something), and I’m tired enough that I can fall asleep quickly.
11. something nice you did for someone else recently!
Mmmm I hate saying things like this because it feels like bragging. So I’m just going to go with some small things. I took the trash and recycling out for my roommate even though it wasn’t my week to do so, because the girl who was supposed to do it had left for the weekend. I also checked up on a friend from my class on Facebook because I hadn’t heard from her in a long time and wanted to make sure she was doing okay.
Questions for anyone who wants to do them:
What’s the hardest video game you’ve ever beaten?
What’s the furthest east, south, west, and north you’ve been?
What’s the coolest animal you’ve seen in the wild?
What book/movie/show did you watch/read as a kid that was wayyy too old for you?
When you get a new favorite character, do you instantly know they’re going to be the one, or do they grow on you slowly?
Do you like extra content in fandom (DLCs, guide books, stuff revealed by creators in an interview) or would you rather stick to the books/movies/whatever themselves?
Have you ever gone to summer camp, and did you like it?
Skiing, snowboarding, or neither?
Favorite Halloween memory? (If you celebrate it; if not, favorite holiday memory of your choice!)
What superpower/superhuman ability would you LEAST want to have?
Something new and interesting you’ve learned this week.

Soundproof a laundry room? 6 steps on how to do it
Wouldn’t it be nice if you could soundproof your laundry room? I know how frustrating it is when you hear the washing machine or dryer all the way from the laundry room. It can make it hard to sleep at night, and it can also make it hard to watch television, or carry on a conversation with your friend or family member. I can tell you this, nothing drives me more crazy than hearing a loud washing machine or dryer, especially when they go off. When some of the washer and dryers go off, they make this real loud noise that can perhaps startle you, or even give you a heart attack. In this post, I’m going to help you fix that problem, and help you to soundproof your laundry room.I know this may be confusing at first, but just like in my other posts, I’m going to provide a step by step formula for soundproofing your laundry room. I’m also going to show you how you can soundproof your laundry room yourself, and very inexpensively. If you hire a professional to soundproof your laundry room, it can end up costing you thousands of dollars. However, if you soundproof your laundry room yourself, you can soundproof your laundry room for under two hundred dollars! You may be able to get it under a hundred dollars if you’re really creative. If you’re looking to soundproof your laundry room yourself, here is the step by step formula for how to do it correctly. Now, please note that you will end up making small mistakes along the way, but the good news is you learn from your mistakes, and they make you smarter. Hiring someone else can save you a lot of time, but doing it yourself can save you a lot of money. Which would you rather save; time or money? I don’t know what your answer is but I’d rather save money. Okay, so you know what the better option is, and that is of course doing it yourself. Here is the step by step formula for soundproofing a laundry room.
Step 1: Inspect the laundry room
Before you soundproof your laundry room, it is very important to inspect your laundry room first. Like I said in my other posts, you must inspect the room before soundproofing, or else you’ll risk running into problems. You don’t want to end up running into problems right in the middle of your soundproofing project.Make sure to inspect the room for any holes in the ceiling, walls, or door. You also want to inspect the washer and dryer as well, since you will be decreasing the noise of both of them as part of soundproofing the laundry room.
Step 2: Seal Any holes you may find in the walls, ceilings, and doors
After you inspect everything in the laundry room and happen to find any holes in the walls or ceilings, you can now seal the holes, or fill then with insulation or you can cover them up with drywall. I recommend covering up the holes with drywall because it will make it look more real, and nicer. Filling the holes in with insulation will make it look ugly, and you may be fine with doing that. It is very rare for guest to look at your laundry room, so you may be okay with filling the holes in with insulation. I personally recommend drywall anyway, because it will keep the sound out even better. You want to do as good of a job as possible when soundproofing your laundry room, so that way you won’t have to hear that loud washer and dryer anymore. Still hearing the washer and dryer a little bit can still be frustrating, because you put in all that wok and you still hear it, so make sure to do the job right so you won’t hear the washer and dryer anymore. After you have filled in all of the holes in your walls, ceilings, and doors, you can now move onto step three, which is sealing the door with weather stripping.
Step 3: Seal the door with weather stripping
After you fill any holes in the walls, ceilings, and doors, you can now seal the inside of your door with weather stripping. If you’ve read my other posts, I mentioned weather stripping in some of them. I just think it’s so effective to soundproof a room, but I don’t recommend you do just this since it won’t eliminate the sound completely. Make sure you follow every single step in this post. My goal for this blog is to help you soundproof your home completely, so you can turn your home into a peaceful heaven after your finished soundproofing. To get the most out of this post, make sure to follow the steps. The next step is to install a door sweep at the bottom of your door.
Step 4: Install a door sweep at the bottom of your door
After you have sealed the door with weather stripping, you can now install a door sweep at the bottom of your door. This will keep the sound out even more, and it may even eliminate the sound completely. I also mentioned this a few times in my other posts, because again, I believe it’s so effective. In the next step though, I’m going to show you how to decrease the noise of both your washer and dryer. Once you complete all of these steps, there’s going to be a big difference in sound coming from your laundry room.
Step 5: Decrease the noise of the washer and dryer, or purchase new ones
Now, the time has finally came to decrease the noise of your washer and dryer. You see, it is possible to decrease the noise of your washer and dryer. You can either do what I’m going to show you, or you may just want to purchase a new washer and dryer. You can buy them on sites like amazon, Lowes, or Home Depot. If you want to decrease the noise of your existing washer and dryer, you can do it by placing anti-vibration pads at the bottom of the washer. These pads are supper cheap to get, or you can buy them on amazon for super cheap. Make sure the pads are underneath the feet of the washer and dryer, because that’s what will help decrease the noise.
Step 6: Continue to monitor the sound of the laundry room
After you’ve done all of the above, continue to monitor the sound the laundry room. If you can still hear the sound coming from the laundry room, there’s a good chance that you didn’t do something right. However, if you’ve followed the directions in this post, then there’s a really good chance that you won’t hear much out of your laundry room. It’s normal to hear a little bit, but you will see a big difference in sound after doing everything I told you to do in this post. Still monitor the sound once in a while, because that will keep you updated on the results of your work. After some time, you won’t need to monitor the sound anymore. You may not even notice the sound coming out of the laundry room after a while. You may end up forgetting you have clothes in the wash or dryer, simply because you can’t hear it.However, you can always set a timer to remind you that there’s clothes in the laundry.
Conclusion
Soundproofing a laundry room can be difficult, but if you follow the steps in this post, it is almost guarantee that you will cut out the sound completely. Do not hesitate to leave a comment below on your thoughts about this post, and share this post with your friends, and anybody who might benefit from this information.

These 4 Simple Moves Can Make You Debt-Free. But You Won’t Do Them
We all want to be debt-free, right?
But why stop there? Itd be nice to have a little savings stash, too. Maybe some spending money for, I donât know, a vacation? A splurge? A treat-yourself day?
Listen: Becoming debt-free â and even having some savings â doesnât have to be The Most Difficult Thing Everâ¢.
In fact, we have a few tips that will make it easier than you might think.
Wait. Wait. We all know how it goes. You make ambitious plans. You know you could accomplish these things if you just rip the Band-aid off and stick with them. But you wonât. The task seems so daunting that you just procrastinate. Forever.
Letâs make it different this time. These four tips can help set you on the path to be debt-free. If you actually stick with themâ¦
1. Finally Seek Help in Paying Down Those Credit Cards
Listen. We all need a little help from time to time. Even if youâve been putting this off, itâs OK to ask for help. Itâs time to finally tackle this problem.
Thatâs where a company like Fiona can be helpful. It can help you find personalized lending options to refinance or consolidate your debt to potentially save thousands dollars in interest.
Fiona will show you all the lenders willing to help you pay off your credit card and eliminate the headache of paying bills by allowing you to make one payment each month.
You can borrow up to $100,000 (no collateral needed) and compare interest rates, which start at 4.99%. The idea is to secure a loan at a lower interest rate, potentially helping you save thousands. Repayment plans range from 24 to 84 months.
Take, for example, Katherine, who faced $12,000 in credit-card debt. Holding her back? The 15.24% interest rate. By refinancing with a 5%-interest, seven-year personal loan, she saved $12,000 in interest.
If sheâd kept on the same road, she would have paid something like $14,000 in interest alone over 25 years. Yikes.
So even if youâre simply curious about whatâs out there, know that checking rates on Fiona wonât hurt your credit score â and can probably save you in interest.
2. Actually Take a Few Minutes to Compare Prices and Save $720/Year
Youâve said you were going to do this. You know you could probably save money on your car insurance, if only you shopped around. But you havenât. Youâre probably overpaying. But how would you know, really?
Have you compared rates from the 20 largest auto insurers that do business in your area? That sounds kind of difficult and time-consuming, doesnât it?
Fortunately, a service called Gabi will do it for you, and you donât even have to fill out any forms. Simply link your insurance account and provide your driverâs license number, and Gabi will go to work.
Once you link your insurance account to Gabi, it will:
Scan your existing insurance plan.
Analyze what coverage you have.
Compare the major insurersâ rates for that same coverage.
Help you switch on the spot if it finds you a better rate.
Gabi says it finds an average savings of $720 per year for its customers.
It is a true apples-to-apples comparison at the same coverage levels and deductibles you currently have. Once you sign up, you never have to shop again. Gabiâs software has your policy on file and keeps on monitoring for savings as your life changes.
3. Go on a Treasure Hunt to Find Hidden Cash (Without Digging Your Heels in)
Actually, in this case, you literally wonât have to go on a treasure hunt, which is all the more reason to go ahead and check this simple task off your to-do list. Itâs super easy to dig up hidden cash when you just take a few minutes to find out where youâre losing money.
First, download TrueBill, an app thatâll negotiate your bills, cancel unwanted subscriptions and refund your bank fees. On average, Truebill says it helps customers save more than $700 a year.
Second, try digging up some extra cash with Paribus â a tool that gets you money back for your online purchases.Itâs free to sign up, and once you do, it will scan your email for any receipts. If it discovers youâve purchased something from one of its monitored retailers, it will track the itemâs price and help you get a refund when thereâs a price drop.
Finally, one of our favorite ways to save on everything is with Ebates, a cash-back site that rewards you nearly every time you buy something online. For example, Ebates gives you 10% cash-back on online purchases at Walmart. Plus, youâll get a free $10 gift card to Walmart for giving the site a try.
4. Start Paying Your Bills on Time (Because This Company Will Reward You)
OK, so maybe you just need a little bit of an incentive to get your finances in order. Well, remember how your parents gave you an allowance for washing the dishes and sweeping the floor?
Now that youâre a grown-up, you no longer get rewarded for just doing the things that are expected of you â like, for instance, paying bills on time.
Not until now, anyway. MoneyLion, a free app for managing your personal finances, will reward you for things like paying your bills and monitoring your credit â even just setting up an account in the app.
Much like that childhood allowance, itâs basically bribing you to be good.
Youâll earn points in the appâs rewards program, and you can redeem them for gift cards to more than 15,000 retailers, including places like Walmart, Applebeeâs and Amazon.
If you want to take it a step further and work on paying down debts, for example, MoneyLion can help with a loan to consolidate your debt and potentially reduce your interest rates. And itâll reward you for that, too!
