I really dislike it when people say, " Yugi was so alone before he met Atem, nobody was there to protect him."

No, he did have someone to protect him. Her name is Anzu. She protected him from bullies and was there for him when he felt alone. She was and remained his hero.

And once she learned of Atem's existence, she actually began protecting both of them. And they protected her. Their relationship is incredibly complex. She has feelings for both of them, and they have feelings for her. Her forward-thinking nature pushes the whole team into the future. Not just Yugi and Atem. She is the one that encourages the guys to move forward, she is the one that calls out Kaiba's self-destructive behavior, and she is the one that understands all of them better than they understand themselves. This is one of the most underrated aspects of the Yugioh manga. Because the anime gave a lot of her incredible character moments to male characters or ignored them all together.
