Please enjoy Gigue from #cellosuite no 1 by #johannsebastianbach The gigue was usually the lively and festive finale to a #baroque dance suite, which is true in this case. The dance is usually characterized by wide leaps within a triple meter. When performed without repeats, this gigue fits perfectly within the limits of a 1 minute standard Instagram video. #bach was clearly ahead of his time! Please enjoy Gavotte from Cello suite no. 6, by J.S. Bach! This movement is actually 2 Gavottes, both in the key of D. Gavotte 2 has sections which remind me of an organ or hurdy-gurdy as well as bagpipes. This movement gives me the impression of walking through an outdoor festival hearing music coming from different places as I pass by. My Suzuki violin students enjoy learning this piece in a wonderful and simplified arrangement in Suzuki violin school book 5. Suzuki’s arrangement is in the original key since the cello never uses the lowest C string in this movement. My apologies! I posted the wrong video in my last post. Here’s the correct video! This collaborative video with Chiko Kinoshita completes Handel’s Sonata in D. Please check out @chikolotus for wonderful music and photography! Here we play the second movement (Allegro). This is a classic which is performed a lot by intermediate students in Suzuki group classes and performances. The composition uses an acceleration technique whereby long note values are heard first and shorter faster notes are added to the melodic material in time. The first running 16th note passage doesn’t occur until the 13th measure so I always remind my students not to begin too quickly! Please enjoy! Here we perform Adagio from Sonata in F, commonly attributed to Handel but almost certainly not composed by him. The true composer is unknown. The first publication of Handel’s sonatas in 1722 made it clear that several had not been composed by Handel. A reprint in 1733 contained an editorial comment “Not Mr. Handel’s sonata” along with this work. In any case, this is a wonderful work to perform and listen to. I particularly enjoy the lovely interaction between the violin and the bass line. Two violas at Luthier Hiroshi Iizuka’s. The viola on the left is at a more advanced stage of construction. Having been assembled and spent several months aging in sunlight, it is almost ready for varnish application. Please enjoy the Courante from J. S. Bach’s Cello Suite no 1 in G, BWV 1007 performed on viola. Courante is derived from the French word for “running”. In a baroque suite, the Courante was generally in either the French style or the Italian. The French style was more complex, featuring dotted rhythms and more double stopping. This Courante seems to be in the Italian style - straightforward and energetic! It begins in the dominant key of G major and goes to the dominant (D major) and relative minor (E minor) before returning to G. When introducing a piece like this to students I compare movement through the keys to leaving home, visiting different places, then returning home with a new perspective!
