All you need to know: Apple presents new iPhones and Apple Watch in Apple Keynote 2018.

The moment of truth for Apple and fans alike has come again on September 12th. As the highlight of the Apple Keynote 2018 the company has revealed not only a sleeker and more “complicated” Apple Watch, but – above all– a new generation of iPhones: the iPhone X s, iPhone X s Max and iPhone S R.

Apple Watch Series 4: Bigger Display, Thinner than before

The Apple Keynote started off with the new Apple Watch Series 4, which not only will be a better companion while plunging into a pool with IP-68 water resistance, but will also feature a bigger display, also a thinner bezel. Talking about thinner: The Apple Watch 4 has shrunk to a thickness of 10,5 mm compared to the previous Series 3 model with a width of 11,4 mm. Although, the watch itself will be offered in two slightly larger models than previously offered: 44mm and 40mm are the versions offered, instead of 42mm and 38mm as in seen in the past. Series 4 still gains 0.2 mm compared to the first-generation of Apple Watches, but the new new generation, of course, has much more to offer. 

Lifesaver Apple Watch?

One of the most intriguing features that were announced during the Keynote is the integrated electrocardiogram (ECG) in the Apple Watch Series 4. “Capturing meaningful data about someone’s heart in real time is changing the way we practice medicine,”  Ivor Benjamin, president of the American Heart Association, said. Contrary to heart sensors we already know from the previous generations, Series 4 will be able to warn the user of serious heart conditions on the fly. 

At first glance this seems a little farfetched, but this feature has been blessed not only by the American Heart Association, but also by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a revolutionary medical device. “The FDA worked closely with the company as they developed and tested these software products, which may help millions of users identify health concerns more quickly,” FDA chief Scott Gottlieb said.

To use the ECG all you have to do is place your finger on the crown of the device, where it features a electrode measuring your heartbeat. Another one is also integrated in the back of the redesigned Apple Watch. In case of unusual heart activity, the Watch will notify the user of the condition in detail. According the Apple the data will stay encrypted and you can share them via PDF with your doctor. 

Another noteworthy new feature: Apple Watch Series 4 is now able to recognize if you have slipped, tripped or fallen and will alert via existing medial alert system if assistance is needed. After a minute of being unconscious or not being able to interact with the watch, the emergency call will be automatically dialed and GPS coordinates as well as measured conditions will be sent to assist in the rescue.

The new iPhone generation: iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR

The highlight of the Apple Keynote 2018 is the new iPhone generation, namely the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and the iPhone XR. But let’s first talk about the first two devices. Among those devices the Max had probably the biggest crowd feedback featuring the design of the previous iPhone X, but with a much bigger 6.5-inch screen – even bigger than the screen on Samsung’s latest Galaxy Note. 

Display, Performance & Design (in short)

All the new devices offer a Super Retina display with a million-to-one contrast ratio and an even more crisp image than we are used to from previous iPhones. Also all new devices will make use of the new A12 Bionic chip offering much faster performance than the A11 chip in the iPhone X.

All the new devices are build with much more robust glass and steel rails. Also the new stereo speakers featured in the new iPhone generation are supposed to deliver a great improvement in sound quality over the previous model. The sound will come out the top and the bottom of the phone for the stereo sound to have an impact.

Revolution in Photography

With a new generation of iPhones emerging, usually there comes great improvements in the camera. Year after year Apple has proven to offer devices with the best camera on the market – and this year is no exception. The new iPhone X generation boasts a 12MP Dual Camera System. This sounds at first not very innovating at all, but looking closer gives you all the justification you are looking for. With greater capabilities in depth segmentation using Apple’s own Neural Engine (as part of the new A12 Bionic Chip) and Smart HDR, you are able to adjust the bokeh of picture after you have taken them, which is a feature no other phone on the market features. The new camera sensor, according to Apple, is also twice as fast as the previous model’s. Moreover, the camera features 2x optical zoom, improved performance in low-light conditions and a larger and deeper pixel density. Four build-in mics help capture the stereo sound of video recordings better.

iPhone XR

The most affordable device out of the bunch will be the iPhone XR. In contrast to the more expensive IPhone-X-models it will not come in solid gold, space grey or silver version. Next to more more subtle colors such as black and white the iPhone XR will also come in red, coral, yellow and blue and will most likely find a greater audience among younger customers.

The display has a 6.1-inch Liquid Retina display, using LCD technology, where the more premium models feature OLED for their displays. The camera of the iPhone XR will also have 12MP and make use of the improved Portrait mode with the new bokeh editing mode. If you want to take a plunge into a pool, though, you will have to leave the phone outside of the water, as it is with a protection rating of IP67 only resistant to everyday spills and dust.

Battery Life of the new iPhone generation

The new generation show minimal improvement in battery life. The iPhone XS will last about 30 min longer, while the bigger XS Max will outlive the old iPhone 8 by circa 90 minutes. The description for the iPhone XR is a little bit more vague and according to Apple will last all day.
