Did you know that many Valencian people consider this song the anthem of the Valencian Country?

Technically, nowadays the Valencian Country is recognised as having a “regional anthem”, but the one that was chosen for that official honour is hated by many Valencians. That song is called “Himne de l’Exposició” and was composed in the year 1909 for an event that was held that year called the Regional Exhibition. The song talked about the Valencian people “offering their glories to Spain”, so as you can imagine many Valencian people don’t feel it at all as their anthem. (You can listen to the Exhibition Anthem here, but it if you don’t want to, just imagine what an average anthem sounds like and you will be close).

On the opposite, the song that I link to in this post is a much more ancient song, a traditional song whose author is unknown. It’s a traditional song played to dance the muixeranga (the traditional Valencian human towers dance) and has been seen for a long time as a symbol of Valencian identity. For this reason and for its beautiful combative lyrics, many Valencians consider this their anthem.

L'aire està moguent per la Llibertat I el vent de ponent girarà en Llevant.

The air is moving for Freedom And the wind of the West will turn in the East. [Note: the Valencian Country is sometimes called “East” because of its geographical situation in the Iberian peninsula.]

As I hope you can see despite my translation, the lyrics are a subtle call for resistance, fight, and hope. The light sprouts in the night as the buds were moving in winter, preparing for the spring before anyone could see they were alive. We are now in the dawn, where we are being called to wake up. Anyone familiar with the history of how the Valencian Country has been oppressed by Spain for centuries will understand the emotion behind those lyrics.

Many people demand that this should be the official anthem of the Valencian Country, as many people consider it to be representative and, on the opposite, they consider that the Himne de l’Exposició doesn’t represent them and is Spanish imperialist.

Desvelamos la imagen de #GRAFBCN2017

La novena edición de GRAF se celebrará en Barcelona los días 3, 4 y 5 de marzo, en Fabra i Coats.

Para el cartel de esta edición hemos contado con el talento de Álvaro Ortiz (Zaragoza, 1983), uno de los más reputados dibujantes españoles de novela gráfica. Álvaro comenzó muy joven su carrera, en revistas como Dos veces breve, y realizó varias obras dirigidas al público infantil, como Julia y la voz de la ballena (De Ponent, 2009). Fjorden (2011) fue un cómic autoeditado que realizó aprovechando una estancia en Noruega, y que puede leerse gratis en la red.

Cenizas (Astiberri, 2012) supone su consagración entre el gran público y el inicio de una nueva etapa marcada por su interés en los viajes, los crímenes truculentos y los personajes misteriosos. Murderabilia (Astiberri, 2014) continuó en esa línea y fue nominada a los prestigiosos premios del Festival de Angoulême. Rituales (Astiberri, 2015) y Viajes (Astiberri, 2016) son sus dos últimas obras, en las que confirma la calidad de su trabajo y su progresión ascendente. Entre ambas ha tenido tiempo de realizar un cómic para el Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza: Dos holandeses en Nápoles, sobre la figura de Caravaggio.

En su ilustración para el cartel de GRAF, Álvaro imagina una iconografía propia de sorprendente influencia oriental, en la que el cómic se ha convertido en un artefacto arcano.

GRAF es un encuentro dedicado al cómic de autor y la edición independiente que comenzó su andadura en 2013 y se celebra dos veces al año, alternativamente en Madrid y Barcelona. ¡Os esperamos en #GRAFBCN2017!

Ninth Edition of GRAF will take place in Barcelona, 3rd to 5th of March, in Fabra i Coats.

Álvaro Ortiz (Zaragoza, 1983), one of the most reputed Spanish graphic novelists, is the talented author of the new poster. Álvaro started his career very early, in magazines as Dos Veces Breve. Then he published works for young audience, as Julia y la voz de la ballena (De Ponent, 2009). Fjorden (2011) was a selfpublished comic which he drew staying in Norway, avaible for free in his website.

Cenizas (Astiberri, 2012) brought him recognition among a wide audience, and the beggining of a new stage marked by his interest in travels, weird murders and misterious characters. Murderabilia (Astiberri, 2014) continued that trend and was nominated to the prestigious Angoulême Festival Awards. Rituales (Astiberri, 2015) and Viajes (Astiberri, 2016) are his latest works, in which he confirms his quality and his outstanding progression. In the meanwhile of these two books, he could make a comic for Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum: Dos holandeses en Nápoles, about Italian artist Caravaggio.

In his drawing for GRAF poster, Álvaro imagines an own iconography surprisingly influenced by Orient, where comic has become an arcane artefact.

GRAF is a festival dedicated to small press and independent edition which started in 2013 and celebrated two times a year, alternately in Barcelona and Madrid. We wait for us in #GRAFBCN2017!
