Shared from @carolinas_past . Built circa 1840 by the Ravenel family of Charleston, SC, who lived here for several years. A Mr. Stuart then ran the Stuart School for Boys and later in conjunction with the large brick building next door, as part of the Ladd’s girls school, operated by Catherine (1808-1899) and George Ladd (1802-1864) through the Civil War. It is said that Mrs. Ladd saved the home from destruction by Northern Troops in 1865 by friendship with a Yankee soldier. George McMaster owned the house in 1867, and ended up gifting it to his daughter, Annie Beatty, in 1885. Her descendants remained in the home for nearly 100 years. Shared from @mansionsofthegildedage . Salutations, Glen Cove, Long Island, NY. Built for Junius Spencer Morgan III who was the grandson of the famed finanical Wall Street wizard, J.P. Morgan. Heir to millions he was able to lead a life of leisure and splendor. One of the pleasures he was able to enjoy was a magnifiecent estate and mansion located on a private isand near Glen Cove, Long Island, NY. The estate was named Salutations and is a grand stone structure designed by architect Roger Bullard in 1928. But, for me, The Derby House comes pretty darn close.  It was built in 1762 for Elias Hasket Derby, who is believed to have been America’s first millionaire. Right across from Salem harbor! Brick! Formal garden out back! What’s not to love?? Shared from @loveofhouses . I figured you all needed another view of this house. The Cornish Mansion. Joel N. Cornish purchased the land in 1886. He hired Council Bluffs architect Styles Ezra Maxon to design the Second Empire home. Construction was finished in 1887, and the family of six moved into the home in 1888. . Cornish was born in New York, became a lawyer and moved to Iowa in 1854. President Abraham Lincoln appointed him a colonel while serving for the Iowa Cavalry in the Civil War and he kept the title for the rest of his life. After the war, Cornish made his way into banking. He passed away in 1908 and shortly after, the mansion was converted into apartments. Today, we are highlighting the home at 51 Martin Street, also known as the Henry Lamson House. Built in 1851, the home was built by and for Mr. Lamson and his family. Lamson was a bricklayer by trade and the home shows the prosperity that many masons had at the time. The style of the house can be classified as Italianate with its overhanging eaves and brackets. The porch and side porch (since enclosed) were added in the early 20th century with Colonial Revival influence. The brick house was stuccoed over and scored to resemble ashlar granite block construction.
