The iconic Second Empire mansion at 3966 Trumbull Avenue has a long, varied history. Built in 1875, it was part of the Hodges Brothers Woodbridge Farm development. During most of the 20th century, it was a hospital in one form or another, first as a maternity hospital (Marr), then as a general hospital (Trumbull General). In the 1950s, Trumbull General Hospital became a hospital for Detroit’s black community, at the height of segregation in this country. After being vacant and rundown for decades, the home was renovated and converted to apartment. In 2016, the property made news internationally when it was purchased by legendary pro skater, Tony Hawk. The large street trees and brick streets will lead you to a time capsule of architecture frozen in time. Wakins F. Nesbit, a local dry goods merchant, built this 3-story brick Second Empire Style residence for his wife, 8 of his 10 children and 3 servants in 1878-79. #mansardmonday - I haven't done one of these in a while and here is a really nice one I found when I was in Winston-Salem, #NorthCarolina. This is the Dr. John Francis Shaffner House on South Main Street. It was built in 1873 for Dr. Shaffner. He was born in Salem in 1838. Shaffner had a medical practice in Salem. He was also a leader in civic activities, serving as a mayor of Salem, President of the Salem Water Supply Company, and Vice-President of the Winston-Salem Building and Loan. Philo Wright, a Detroit-based ship owner, built this home in the prestigious neighborhood located just north of downtown. Completed in 1872, it was yet another example of the Second Empire style, which was once so omnipresent in the neighborhood, it earned the moniker of "Little Paris". Among the home’s many highlights are the decorative windows and the unmistakable Mansard roof. The carriage house is the main home miniaturized. In 1882, the house was presented to Grace Whitney Evans as a wedding gift by her father, lumber baron David Whitney, Jr. Two years later, Mrs. Evans began renting her home to one Joseph Lowthian Hudson, founder of the ubiquitous Detroit department store.
