The Arctic 157 years ago today: Gold Rushes in the Pacific Northwest (19 Jul 1862) https://buff.ly/2JQ0KF0 For some time after the Oregon Treaty, Britain's naval base on Vancouver Island was its only major presence in the Pacific Northwest. However in the late 1850s multiple gold strikes began drawing large numbers of prospectors from the United States to the region. In an attempt to maintain control of this influx and preempt any secessionist movements, the British announced the new colonies of the Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia, and the Stickeen Territories. Of the three, only British Columbia was really viable and soon absorbed both the other two and Vancouver Island. #arctic #history #welovehistory #map #1860s #19thcentury #victorianera #victorian #1862 #britishcolumbia #canada #canadianhistory #arctichistory #goldrush #july #july19 #northwesternterritory #goldrushes #stickeen #britishempire #ushistory #maps #todayinhistory #historytoday #historyteacher #historybuff #historygeek #historynerd #worldhistory #cartography (at Vancouver, British Columbia) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0F1sW1A5uV/?igshid=8l999vw7goab

The Arctic 127 years ago today: Opening up Greenland (05 Aug 1892) https://buff.ly/2ODKYCB For more than a century, Denmark's Royal Greenland Trading Company (KGH) had administered Greenland in a strict monopoly which nonetheless minimized interference in the local Inuit communities. Then in the 1880s and '90s explorers from Sweden-Norway and the US began making expeditions across Greenland's interior, showing that it was an island rather than the peninsula of a supposed Arctic continent. With the increase in foreign influence, Denmark expanded its control over Greenland, ultimately taking over from the KGH in 1908. #arctic #history #welovehistory #map #1890s #19thcentury #victorianera #victorian #1892 #august #august5 #britishcolumbia #canadianhistory #greenland #arctichistory #danishempire #arcticexploration #exploration #historyofexploration #britishempire #maps #todayinhistory #historytoday #historyteacher #historybuff #historygeek #historynerd #worldhistory #cartography #geopolitics (at Thule, Greenland) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0xlB3gAC5A/?igshid=18aq5q5bu2rku

The Arctic 110 years ago today: Race to the North Pole (06 Apr 1909) https://buff.ly/2FT9sQF In 1909 American explorer Robert Peary claimed to be the first to reach the North Pole. Although modern research suggests he had his coordinates wrong and the first to the Pole was actually Roald Amundsen in 1926, US discoveries in the area and the bases they set up gave them something of a claim to northern Greenland. #arctic #history #welovemaps #map #1900s #1909 #april #april6 #canadianhistory #arctichistory #denmark #greenland #northpole #polarexploration #arcticexploration #exploration #robertpeary #roaldamundsen #amundsen #americanhistory #ushistory #maps #todayinhistory #welovehistory #historytoday #historyteacher #historybuff #historygeek #historynerd #worldhistory (at The North Pole) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bv58qvfg0eO/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1botse3oczv9e

The Arctic 87 years ago today: Erik the Red's Land (12 Jul 1932) https://buff.ly/2Liubm1 In return for Denmark abandoning any claims on Svalbard, Norway had agreed to recognize Danish sovereignty over Greenland. However, northeast Greenland remained dominated by Norwegian whalers and trappers and in 1931 declared itself for Norway as Erik the Red's Land. The dispute was brought before the World Court in 1933, which ruled against Norway and led it to abandon the claim. #arctic #history #welovehistory #welovemaps #map #1930s #20thcentury #modernhistory #1932 #arctichistory #denmark #danishhistory #greenland #historyofgreenland #july #july12 #newfoundland #norway #norwegianhistory #svalbard #maps #todayinhistory #historytoday #historyteacher #historybuff #historygeek #historynerd #worldhistory #cartography #geopolitics (at Greenland) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bz0AmldgUeJ/?igshid=mix9v11ayt4v

The Arctic 150 years ago today: Boshin War (27 Jan 1869) https://buff.ly/2RgxGIb In Japan, the instability which had followed the arrival of Perry’s ships had ultimately led to the termination of the Tokugawa Shogunate and the concentration of power in the hands of Emperor Meiji and his supporters. A final attempt to reassert Tokugawa power in the Boshin War was defeated in 1868-9, as imperial forces chased the rebels north into Ezo. Following this victory, Japan formally annexed the Ainu lands of Ezochi, embarking on a policy of rapid consolidation and modernization. #arctic #history #welovemaps #map #1860s #1869 #alaskapurchase #boshinwar #canadianhistory #hokkaido #january #january27 #meiji #shogunate #emperormeiji #arctichistory #japanesehistory #russianempire #tokugawa #ezorepublic #maps #ainu #todayinhistory #historytoday #historyteacher #historybuff #historynerd #historygeek #worldhistory #asianhistory (at Sapporo-shi, Hokkaido, Japan) https://www.instagram.com/p/BtILuJwAQW8/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=szfkxar4adzs

The Arctic 136 years ago today: First International Polar Year (09 Oct 1882) https://buff.ly/2RCxEvF By the 1870s polar exploration was becoming increasingly nationalistic, but some realized that a coordinated approach involving multiple simultaneous expeditions might be more fruitful. This thinking led to the International Polar Year, when from the summer of 1882 to that of 1883, researchers from Austria-Hungary, Britain, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Sweden, and the US operated meteorological stations around the Arctic circle in what was to be the first great international scientific project. #arctic #history #welovemaps #map #1880s #1882 #austriahungary #arctichistory #canadianhistory #arcticexploration #greenland #janmayen #keewatindistrict #northwestterritories #norway #nunavut #october #october9 #russianempire #svalbard #swedishhistory #britishempire #northpole #maps #polarexploration #historygeek #historynerd #historyteacher #todayinhistory #historybuff (at Point Barrow) https://www.instagram.com/p/BotOTL6gLf7/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=gjpdqz89jo0a

The Arctic 168 years ago today: Search for Franklin (21 Oct 1850) https://buff.ly/2R49p8z In 1845 the renowned British explorer Sir John Franklin had set off to find the Northwest Passage, but by winter 1846-7, with no word from Franklin reaching Britain for over a year, it became clear something was wrong. Over the next decade, more than a dozen expeditions crossed and mapped the North American Arctic in search of Franklin, finally discovering that he and his crew had perished in 1847-8. #arctic #history #welovemaps #map #1850 #1850s #amur #britishcolumbia #canada #canadianhistory #polarexploration #khabarovsk #arctichistory #arcticexploration #october #october21 #russianempire #britishempire #ushistory #vancouverisland #maps #historybuff #historygeek #historynerd #historyteacher #northwestpassage #britishamerica #canadianarctic #arcticislands #johnfranklin (at Baffin Island) https://www.instagram.com/p/BpMHE88ABgH/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1d9ngsj48jx9v
