For the prompt: Stannis/Melisandre, shelter from the storm.

Devan said the king scarcely slept of late. “Since Lord Renly died, he has been troubled by terrible nightmares,” the boy had confided to his father. “Maester’s potions do not touch them. Only the Lady Melisandre can soothe him to sleep.” (A Clash of Kings)

Her sleep is never troubled, she tells him. She does not dream. She is not afflicted with terrible nightmares, she assures him. She is –

“You are at peace with yourself the way I could never be?” His tone is accusatory, demanding, aggrieved. She is relieved. This man … this man glaring at her is familiar ground. She knows well enough how to deal with him.

But then his tone shifts to an unfamiliar one. “If you are at peace, then why do you weep, my lady, when you stare at your flame?”

What had he seen, when she thought him safely asleep in her bed, after she had soothed him to sleep with her words and her touch? What had he guessed, when she thought him beyond guessing? What had he concluded, when she thought him beyond concluding? Oh, she had been reckless, far too reckless!

“My tears are tears of joy, my king,” she replies. “Joy at the blessings of my god.”

She never makes the mistake of saying our god, when they are alone. He might consent to suffer allusions to R’hllor as his god in the presence of others (albeit with clenched teeth), but not otherwise.

Do not prate at me about your god, she expects him to snap, to scoff, or even to snort. Instead, he says, merely says, “You speak of your god to deflect queries about yourself.”

Who are you, my lady, to insist that I reveal myself to your satisfaction, while you conceal everything about yourself? he had demanded of her once. What right do you have to unsettle my peace while you remain peacefully and complacently settled yourself? he had added, in a low whisper than had done more to unsettle her peace than anything he had ever said or done before.

He clearly does not think her peacefully and complacently settled now. How she wishes he is still fully and firmly under that illusion.

He does not seem to know where to put his hands. Or how to arrange his face. But the words come out without any hesitation, without even a slight pause. He must have arranged them in his head beforehand. “You comforted me in my hour of need. I wish to return the favor. So that I will not be in your debt.”

This is for his peace of mind, she tells herself, as she allows him to take her hand and lead her back to bed, away from the flame. He needs the illusion that he could be her shelter from the storm, as she had been his. But it is an illusion, merely an illusion, nothing more and nothing less. Unlike him, she needs no shelter from any storm.

When her tears fall, in full view of his gaze, and she does nothing to hide them, she tells herself the same thing.

When she leans into his embrace, and discovers that she could not turn off the flow of tears as easily as she had believed she could, she keeps telling herself the same thing.

She is still telling herself the same thing as she buries her face in his arm.

Hi there, I love your blog!! We are hoping to honeymoon in Greece next year and wondering if you had any island recommendations. It’ll be early November, so we know not to expect perfect beach weather, but would love to do some exploring and eat lots of delicious food/wine! Right now we are drawn to Crete, Rhodes, and Santorini, but kind of clueless!

Hi! I think you have already narrowed it down to some pretty solid and safe options. I don’t have a definitive answer on which one you should choose so let’s examine some parameters seperately first: 

Weather: You have picked three islands in the South / Southeast so you’ll probably avoid the rains. Santorini will most likely be the least rainy but my worry about it is that Santorini can be very windy and quite chilly  at night even in summer let alone November. Crete and Rhodes will most likely be warmer. 

About the beaches: Beaches are not Santorini’s main attraction so you are not losing much in this department anyway. Rhodes and Crete have stunning beaches - you might get the feeling you’re missing out while there in November. 

Size / Time available: Santorini is tiny, Rhodes is big and Crete is huge. If you have fewer than 7 days for your honeymoon, forget about Crete and go to Santorini. If you have around 15 days or more, forget about Santorini and go to Crete. For anything in between, all three islands are doable (Crete to some extent) and Rhodes is the best. 

Honeymoon factor: All islands are great but Santorini is typically marketed as the ultimate honeymoon destination. They all look romantic though. 

Low Season: Even though lately the high seasons get elongated in Greece, I think Santorini and Rhodes will be affected more than Crete. Crete is huge enough that the locals live permanently there so it’s going to be always lively. Rhodians live permanently there too but the island is mostly a summer destination. Overall you might encounter more closed businesses in Santorini. 

Food / wine: You can’t go wrong with any of these three islands. I can’t help more here, they all are famous for their wines and local cuisines. Maybe Crete has the edge on food and Santorini on wine but they are all good.

Prices: Santorini will be the priciest and Rhodes probably the cheapest. 

Explore (history / culture): They are all powerhouses. Santorini is great for prehistoric settlements and the trademark cycladic greek architecture, Rhodes is dream come true for medieval history and architecture (castles, crusaders etc) and Crete covers all ages of Greek history. 

Explore (nature): Santorini is too small to offer much beyond the volcano. Rhodes offers way more but it’s ideal for summer / late spring because some destinations are season specific, like the Valley of Butterflies which fills with…errr…moths that reproduce in May. Crete is a very big island that has a landscape as varied as the mainland with ultra mountain ranges (aka snowcapped in late autumn/winter), canyons, national parks, palm forest, mediterranean semi-arid regions. Crete hands down in this one. 

Summary: Santorini is the most typical honeymoon destination but it’s best for spring / summer / early autumn. Rhodes offers more for nature lovers and medieval history nerds and is cheaper but I would also prefer it earlier in the year. My vote goes to Crete because it has all you want and it can hold up to your expectations in November but only if you have plenty of time. However, all three are good choices.

Yeah, I notified you and then, I blocked you (lol sorry about, I was just really upset). First, thank you for coming into my askbox and being respecful (some aren't unfortunately) and second, apologies accepted. I get what you mean about that quote and yes, it was never my intention to use it in a negative light, on the contrary. I feel like I repeat myself but, I support all the women in the show, they are all different and unique and that's one of the main reason I love it and that's what I always try to do here. The worst is when the joke uses pictures or gifs of Shireen crying and screaming from THAT scene and the caption is like - I’m so glad Stannis is not my father, Happy Father’s Day!

That scene was (and still is) upsetting to a lot of people, can we please not???
