From Captain Jacob Gearhart who worked with Captain Jacob Ten Eyck at the order of General George Washington to secure the boats to make this painting possible, through our family members still serving in the Army today - May God continue to bless your endeavors! HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE U.S. ARMY!
The 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army is on Saturday, June 14, 2025. And the founding of the Army, the oldest of our six military braches, is on this date in 1775.
Thus, it is our pleasure here at the 59 Veterans Project to salute all our U.S. Army veterans, past and present. For now, after 250 years, it still comes down to three words:
"THIS. WE'LL. DEFEND!"

3 JUNE 1784 – FIRST AMERICAN REGIMENT AUTHORIZED
With the Revolutionary War won, the Continental Army (first authorized on 14 June 1775) was no longer needed to secure the new nation's independence. Therefore, the Continental Congress under the Articles of Confederation disbanded the Continental Army on 2 June 1784, ordering the discharge of "the several officers and soldiers now in the service of the United States, except 25 privates to guard the stores at Fort Pitt, and 55 to guard the stores at West Point and other magazines," with the required number of officers.
The next day, 3 June 1784, however, the Congress resolved "a body of troops to consist of seven hundred noncommissioned officers and privates, properly officered, are immediately and indispensably necessary for securing and protecting the northwestern frontiers of the United States."
The newly authorized "First American Regiment" was to consist of eight infantry and two artillery companies, with soldiers drawn from the state militias of Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania for a one-year term of enlistment. The men in the companies at Fort Pitt and West Point retained in the previous day's legislation provided the nucleus of the new regiment's artillery companies.
In 1785 Congress authorized enlisting men directly into "national service" to fill the vacancies in the First American Regiment, and it authorized two additional artillery companies in the wake of Shays' Rebellion in 1786. The First American Regiment was adopted by the new government formed under the U.S. Constitution in 1789 as the 1st Regiment, U.S. Infantry.
The First American Regiment represents the link of continuous service during the Confederation Period between the Continental Army and the U.S. Army as authorized under the Constitution of the United States.
The Continental Navy and Continental Marines were disbanded at the end of the Revolutionary War and not re-established and authorized under the U.S. Constitution until 1798.
