Alternatives to Arrowhead Hunting

Take pictures! A fun and more productive thing to do would be to take pictures of your finds without taking them home and also recording your exact gps location. This way you can make a lithic map of the area and learn a lot more than if you removed the arrowheads from context.

Drawing! There are guides to drawing lithics on the internet, and you could draw surface finds at the site and then leave them.

Flintknapping! Why not make your own collection? You'll gain a much deeper understanding of and connection with the people that produced lithic tools thousands of years ago than if you just took the tools home to look at. You could even take pictures of surface finds and try to recreate them yourself.

Volunteer! Volunteering at a local excavation or museum is great way to fulfill a passion for history. Some digs welcome the public to observe or even help out, just double check before showing up. And there are now field schools open to anyone who is interested in learning about how archaeology is done.

Get involved with geology! Amateur geology has quite a few less ethical issues attached and you can still collect and interact with the earth's history

Some misconceptions I've read in the arrowhunting community:

"We've already learned everything we could from these artifacts": There is a lot we still don't know about early North America. Just because we have typed a lithic tool doesn't mean there isn't a lot we can learn from it!

"But archaeologists have big artifact collections, they're just hoarding it. Why can't I just have a few for myself?": For one, a lot of artifact collections academic archaeologists have come from people who collected artifacts and then later donated them to the university. But without knowing exactly where they came from (and I mean exact coordinates), they are completely worthless to research. So we use them for classroom exercises. And then there are artifacts that archaeologists keep after a project, but the major difference is how the artifact was collected. Which leads me to my next point...

"I'm preserving history by collecting these artifacts": Unfortunately, you're actually doing the exact opposite. In archaeology we do this cool thing called survey, which is where we systematically walk through an area and record any signs of past human activity, mainly artifacts. We record the exact position of anything we find, and we can learn a lot from how sites/artifacts are distributed in an area. When you remove an artifact from where you found it (its context) without recording everything, you have removed not only what we could have learned about that object in particular, but also part of what we could have learned about the area as a whole.

"But I only take it if it's alone, I leave the big collections of artifacts"/"But I only take the ones I think are cool"/"But there are so many more out there": Every artifact is significant, because it's part of a bigger picture. And when you remove ones that stand out to you, you're skewing that picture. You may not take that many, but when a whole community of hunters is specifically picking out rare arrowheads, suddenly there are much less of those types to find, and the ones that have been taken cannot be counted in any research. There's also a bias towards complete points, when in fact, because people tend to only throw away their tools once they break, those are rarer and selecting for these again skews the picture. Prehistoric arrowheads are not a renewable resource. There's only so many out there. Please leave them so that we can learn from them.

Last thoughts:

NEVER EVER EVER dig for arrowheads or attempt your own excavation. Excavation is very destructive and comes with a host of issues. Are you recording stratigraphic layers? Recording the soil type? Screening the soil? Looking for debitage? Do you know what to do when you find human remains?

If you read all this and still want to collect arrowheads, honestly ask yourself why. You're not preserving history, and there are better ways to get involved with lithics or archaeology. It's ultimately a selfish desire to own your own history collection. And we're all selfish sometimes, but it's important to recognize that it's not your history to take.
