Oh boy, a tag game, this was forever ago, but greatly appreciated tag from @bourboninthefireplace!
rules: list 10 songs you really like, each by a different artist, and then tag 10 people to do the same. I could easily have made this list like 20+, so it was hard to choose.
1: Värdelös - Jordbrand
2: Drafur och Gildur - Hedningarna
3: Vaid Vaprust - Metsatöll
4: Gotta go home - Boney M
5: Sing Along - Sturgill Simpson
6: Allen die willen naar island gaan - Het Amelander shantykoor
7: SHUM - Go_A
8: Slam (+Prelude) - Pendulum
9: Gamen - Garmarna
10: ADHD - Loke
I really do not have 10 people who i feel comfortable to tag at random, but i’ll tag @vintervittrannerd and @artificialbrilliance , and ofc anybody else who feels like it as well :)

Hey, wasn't Duels: Origins supposed to become available on Steam today? Did something happen to delay the release or something?

Who would you say had larger impact on the fanbase as a whole: Slugfucker, or the guy who made that Vaporeon 4chan post?
vaporeon copypasta. judging by the notes on this post, slugfucker has been lost to the annals of time (with a couple people even assuming that was his name for himself). vaporeon copypasta on the other hand keeps getting referenced to this day.

Here's a fun question to contemplate: What do you consider the worst designed/implemented feature in Gens 2-7?
it’s a toss-up for me between gen 7′s festival plaza and gen 5′s pokemon musicals
Like, gen 3 had this really robust system with contests and i guess they just decided they were two hard because by gen 5 they’d thrown it all out in favour of what’s basically just a needlessly elongated game of chicken. you have two props. throw your props without getting interrupted. that’s it.
the festival plaza’s maybe the worst, i dunno. like, join avenue from b2w2 was pretty bad but they were still experimenting with stuff. but gen 6 just had such a good online feature and they threw it out in favour of returning to join avenue except worse this time and also we tied all the online functionality into it too

One word of warning about XII that I only very rarely see people talk about: The game basically requires you to use a guide to do most of the optional/sidequest stuff. A massive chunk of the content is locked behind shit like "wait in this specific spot for 5 minutes until the enemy shows up" and usually only gives you cryptic hints at best, and outright wrong/misleading info at worst. Other than that, I agree that it is a game you should defs check out tho.
If I dealt with the Regi puzzles without using a Braille translation I can deal with this. Stupid obtuse puzzles are my favourite.

So, what about those sociolinguistic headcanons for Nibelheim?
WHAT’S THAT YOU WANNA KNOW ABOUT MY DUMB ELABORATE BACKSTORY FOR A MADE-UP SWEARWORD WELL I’D BE HAPPY TO INDULGE
So as far as Nibel goes it’s a pretty isolated region due to the mountains and the cold and the abundance of dragons and wolves and other apex predators all piled into the same area, so a lot of the language mutated from stories that have been passed around for centuries.
I’ve sort of been presenting the culture as Slavic-flavoured Iceland with little bits of Goth (as in third century Germany, not black eyeliner), so they’ve got a pagan system of gods different from the gods everyone else is worshiping around Midgar and such. They’re seen as a lot more fickle, and there’s a lot more overlap with which ones are gods and which ones are just really powerful fae. A lot of that mysticism and superstition is tied to Mount Nibel as it is in the game as well.
(there are also legit faeries in the mountains but they’re more animalistic and it’s debated whether or not the intelligent ones from the stories actually exist ANYWAY)
One of said old folk stories involves a barren mother who makes a blood pact with the mountain for a child. And she gets one and it’s a fucked up fae baby with skin as white as snow and hair as black as the stone of the hearth in Mount Nibel and lips as red as blood. She terrorises the locals for a while until someone cuts off her head and buries it at the foot of the mountain and the moral of the story is don’t make deals with the fucking fae. And yes before you ask I am cribbing this super hard from Snow, Glass, Apples. Everything original I claim to come up with is extremely stolen from another better writer.
So for a while the term “bargain child” enters the vernacular as a euphemism for “changeling”. And from there, it evolved and was used more and more often and while officially “bargain child” meant “changeling”, “changeling” meant “bastard”. There were also unpleasant implications towards the mother -- either that she’d slept around and had a child out of wedlock, that she was barren and couldn’t conceive on her own, or that her mother was sleeping with the fae herself.
So while samningur barn literally means “bargain child”, what it actually means is that someone is calling you a bastard and your mother a whore.
All this entered the language from a centuries-old story about Snow White. Euphemisms are like that. Swearing is especially like that.
Language is weird and stupid and cool and I wanted to reflect that in any sort of culture I’m using.
