So he did exactly what he’d set out to do—eat, walk, window shop. He found a studded bracelet and a pinky ring, and a pair of dangling silver spikes for earrings. They attached to black beads and a little silver hoop; felt like him, so he bought those too even if he couldn’t wear them. One day, maybe, if he found the opportunity and if he wasn’t afraid of what piercing his ears meant for him. Neil was weird like that—bothered by some things, less so by others, very particular anyway. Billy had a dream, though, and kept some things close to him in case that dream were to ever come true. Jewelry and perfume, lighter clothes, longer hair. One day.

After a while longer of looking around, he itched for the water and got a double-scoop cone of vanilla bean ice cream to take with him to the beach. The clouds hardly put a dent in what sun shone through, so the sand stung his feet once his shoes were off, and he couldn’t have been more at ease. He dragged himself through with every step, digging his toes further in, making tracks behind him that the wind eventually covered back up. He felt like a kid again, smiling at the heat on his arms before he took his tank off to hang in his back pocket, and he supposed that this was what freedom felt like. Temporary bliss but bliss nonetheless. He reveled in it and didn’t care about the dripping, sticky dessert over his knuckles. Something was right again, something vague and distant, and he thanked the skies above for giving it to him.

It was almost summer.
