The story of what went behind the creation of Ishaa Studio and it’s various products and services.

I’m writing this blog as something I would like to share as an experience of my own. I’m currently the owner of a Mumbai based art/design studio. I am a creative entrepreneur running my own brand. I have formerly been a student the school of the art institute of Chicago. It’s been almost four years since I returned back to my own homeland, India. With the world happenings today I can’t even begin to think what would have happened if I were to be anywhere other than here my home.

In 2016 the last year of education in the US I was almost certain that I wnated to return back to my home country and take up the challenge of pursuing an art career in India. To a lot of you it seems almost as if I was trying to do something that was going to be extremely challenging. However from the year 2014 I had seen my country grown in ways we couldn’t imagine before. Yes art is luxury for most of this country. Being one of the oldest civilisations with a rich art and cultural history we still consider art as a foreign thing to most of us. I knew it was a tough thing to do.

It was always easier to become a freelance designer and work for someone. But somehow that was not my purpose all along even before I decided to come back home. I was home in my own land to do a lot more than that. I wanted to establish the voice of art, ethnicity and culture back. I knew I had a purpose and a vision that went beyond just wanting to own a brand and making money. My purpose seemed to be establishing a new form of acceptance towards what people understood as art, design and aesthetics in India. With that in mind in late 2017 I started my own brand and started off with my own studio space where I made abstract paintings and drawings. I was really not sure how abstraction was going to be responded with the Indian viewers this time. I knew I wasn’t in NYC or London where art seemed to have a nourishing infrastructure. However I kept going on with my intuition telling me to do so.

Surprisingly things seemed to change here in India. Yes you can’t compare it to the art world outside but yes it was drastically changing. I can say that the global art trade fairs as well as art on Instagram and e-commerce has alot to do with the fast changing format of art buying and selling within India. During my very first art show at the prestigious Jehangir art gallery of Mumbai, I saw an acceptance or rather a strong demand towards what we can call the “newness”, “uniqueness” or even “edginess” for that matter. People were slowly wanting to not only accept but also desire the unusual .

I started travelling to various art and design fairs, events and seminars nationally and globally . I understood that being a fine artist wasn’t just enough, people wanted soemthing more than that. That’s where the emergence of design came into my mind. I wanted to make art that had a larger purpose. Yes art in itself is instrinsic in value and has a holistic purpose however I was more interested in doing something which had an instrumental value. This is where I started to really brain strom. Having a rich four generation family history with textiles it was sort of easy to go and explore into the textile world. I took one thing at a time and spent time visiting textile production centres within my country. I took everything I could to really explore and understand the art of Indian textiles. This changed my vision and not only brought me closer to my roots but also closer to my being as a creative individual.

Four years at Chicago I had a thorough academic understanding of the western world’s art styles and norms of art and design. I knew very well the art of abstraction. But travelling within my own country and exploring the traditional styles of textile art I somehow wanted to bring these two worlds together. I wanted my western knowledge to blend in with my Indian ethnicity and heritage of art and culture. With that In mind I created a concept where I used my abstract paintings as background textures and motifs, I further created hand drawn motifs inspired by Indian folk art and many other illustrative forms of art which could be furthered into repeat patterns. I then decided to blend in digital technology to keep up with a sustainable as well as futuristic format of textile production. I digitally printed my pattern designs on carefully selected high quality fabrics to be used as exclusive and unique pieces of creations for the fashion world to consume.

Today at Ishaa Studio as we have a successful design collection each season of over 500 designs and colour ways using my own paintings ,drawing and hand made motifs . We are a leading brand who can guarantee you creation that is exclusive and inherently comes out of pure art and aesthetics. The future of fashion needs to run on principles of sustainable thinking. We at Ishaa Studio believe in sustainable methods of production and hence we work with minimal order quantity that fits your individual requirement.

Ishaa studio’s director is someone who believes in think globally act locally! She believe in walking with time and hence travelling to various art and design events and trade fairs we over time also learnt that we wanted to provide our customers with “value for money” products. Isha was not very keen on limiting art buying to the elite and making it something that primiarily was a luxury good. she wanted a lot more people to be able to afford good quality art. Hence we sell paintings and drawings to our buyers with the thought of affordablity in mind. We believe in high quality yet affordable as our mantra.
