M. C. Escher Work Enters the Public Domain—and More Art News – ARTnews.com
IT’S NOT JUST MICKEY MOUSE—other artworks have now entered the common domain, too. Artnet News has a look at what’s now available for usage by the general public, and there’s a bounty of art-related material. Are you, like many others across the world, celebrating the 100th anniversary of Surrealism? You’re in luck: André Breton’s novel Nadja has officially entered the public domain. Perhaps you love M. C. Escher? His print Tower of Babel, featuring a vertigo-inducing view of the titular structure, is also joining that Breton book, along with pieces by Francis Picabia, Georgia O’Keeffe, Edward Hopper, and much more.
CRIME BLOTTER. The Pennsylvanian city of Scranton may not be a destination for art museums, but it is the site of a not-insignificant art heist that took place in 2005. At the Everhart Museum, thieves walked away with works by Andy Warhol and Jackson Pollock, and only recently have authorities begun to track down the people responsible. Four pleaded guilty to the crime last year. On Monday, another suspect surrendered himself, according to WNEP. He had been wanted for seven months as part of an alleged ring that also targeted New Jersey’s Ringwood Manor, where thieves heisted a Jasper Cropsey painting in 2011.  ...

Yuve Yuve Yu, Propaganda, and Klimt - a Friday List
Welcome to the third Friday in June! Weather-wise we have had a bit of an eventful week for June, check out this hail that fell just northeast of us last night. I think that this was our third hailstorm this year, the local roofing companies are staying busy. Happy Father’s Day to all of the fathers! I am incredibly grateful for my own.
As always I hope that you have something enjoyable and or restful planned for your weekend. Enjoy this Friday list and a few pictures at the end!
Bat acts like a dog, demands belly rubs - YouTube, I have been fascinated with Flying Foxes for the last several years. And Eddie is a good example of why, he’s clever and strong with lots of personality.
Stormy Weather in color - The Nicholas Brothers and Cab Calloway | Colorized with DeOldify - YouTube, Fayard and Harold were incredible self-taught dancers. The sheer energy and strength that it takes to dance how they danced matched with an incredible preciseness is amazing to watch. In this clip they are dancing to Cab Calloway and his orchestra playing “Jumpin’ Jive.” Two of my favorite things….incredible dancing along with incredible music!
VIVALDI SUMMER - SYMPHONIACS - Violin Concerto In G Minor, Rv 315 III. Presto (The Four Seasons) - YouTube, I am working to break my record of the use of the word “incredible.” But The Four Seasons is such an incredible piece of music and you don’t even have to enjoy Classical music to appreciate its value. The Symphoniacs do such a great version of Summer here, so enjoyable.
The Hu - Yuve Yuve Yu - Live Acoustic at the Mongolian Embassy, Paris, France - YouTube, this was filmed after The HU was nominated as an Artist for Peace by UNESCO. Their use of the Morin Khuur (horsehead fiddle) mixed with some metal is a beautiful mix of old and new.
The HU - Yuve Yuve Yu (Official Music Video) - YouTube, I am sure that I have shared this one before but it’s worth resharing. It’s best if played with earbuds in and volume perhaps a bit higher than should be for the health of ones ears.
Facts don’t change minds: a case for the virtues of propaganda | Psyche Ideas, I learned a few new things reading this article which is often a very good thing. A good example of the use of positive propaganda.
The 12 Best Wireless Earbuds of 2023 – Robb Report, I personally prefer the Beats earbuds for quality of sound yet if I had an extra $300 to spare I would snatch up the Bose QuietComfort earbuds in a second!
A Brief Overview of Pre-Raphaelite Art - Invaluable, this was an enjoyable, short  read on Pre-Raphaelite art, specifically its origins. Waterhouse has been one of my favorite artists since I was in high school. I had a print of the  Lady of Shalott for years, Boreas is my second favorite.
Klimt’s Last Portrait Expected to Sell for Over $80 M. at Sotheby’s – ARTnews.com, this is so beyond my understanding. At the same time, if I had the money I would for sure pay that amount to have an original Klimt. It is such a beautiful piece and I love the colors and symbols that he used.

Quote
In her 2010 essay “Aesthetics of Resistance? Artistic Research as Discipline and Conflict,” Steyerl discusses authors, photographers, and self-proclaimed “factographers”—including Dziga Vertov, Sergei Tretyakov, Lyubov Popova, and Aleksandr Rodchenko—whose epistemological debates centered on terms such as “fact,” “reality,” and “objectivity.” From Constructivism, in which artists were redefined as designers, technicians, and engineers engaged in developing new approaches to constructing forms, emerged the program of Productivism and the associated method called “factography.”

TODAY'S FEATURED COMIC ART
GEORGE LUCAS ILLUSTRATION
ARTISTS: DAN HIPP
OWNER: NICK WARMACK Paid Member
MEMBER SINCE 2006
This week marked the 80th birthday of George Lucas, filmmaker and entrepreneur best known for creating the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises. Seen here in an illustration by cartoonist Dan Hipp, Lucas is a well known collector of art by the likes of Carl Barks, Norman Rockwell, Frank Frazetta, Winsor McCay, and many more. Currently under construction in Los Angeles is the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art which will house and exhibit his collection for the world to enjoy.
"For me, narrative art provides insights into societies and what people aspire to, what they really want, who they really are and/or who they wish to be. That has always inspired me as a collector and it continues to inspire me as we think about the impact the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art will have on people’s lives." Lucas told ArtNews.com. "The stories that art tells are often key to understanding a society and its aspirations—whether our own or others. We hope the Lucas Museum will help audiences better understand the world and build toward a more just and empathetic society."

Timothy R. Collins Receives Mississippi Arts Commission Grant
Jackson, MS. – 12/02/2022 – Timothy R. Collins of Gore Springs, MS. Has been awarded a $500.00 grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission. This grant is a portion of the more than $1.65 million in grants MAC awarded in Fiscal Year 2023. MAC grants are made possible by continued funding from the Mississippi State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.
“Our arts community is incredible, and we are very pleased to provide even more grants to artists throughout the state , nearly twice as many as last year”, said Sarah Story, executive director of MAC. “Mississippi’s artistic legacy was built through the talents of its exceptionally creative citizens. These funds help support the next generation of amazing artists and ensure that the story of artistic excellence in our state lives on.”
Timothy R. Collins:
My paintings are inspired by life, the world, and my personal experience. They’re about
the universal themes that connect all of us. My images come from all over, a photo,
sketch, the streets, visions, and memory. If it relates to the concept I’m trying to
express, I use it. The artwork reflects a longstanding relationship with abstraction, color,
materials and found objects. I want the viewer of my artwork to feel and think about
what he or she sees. To use their emotions and their imaginations, to put themselves in
my place. I’d like the audience of my pictures to stop and invest their time in what they
view. I want my work to become a mirror to the viewer showing the beauty and ugliness
that surrounds us. But in considering my work, I hope the person comes away with a
richer understanding of our world and the common thread that joins us together.
Mr. Collins artwork has been displayed in solo and group exhibitions in Chicago as well
as New York City, including The New York Public Library, The Beverly Art Center,
Gallery Guichard, the University of Illinois at Chicago, The Museum of Science and
Industry, and Gallery 312. He has received awards and grants, including The Citation
Award from Black Creativity (Museum of Science and Industry), The Best of Show from
The Beer Art Competition (Beverly Art Center), both awards received for his work called
“Emmet Till, Wolf Whistle: Before and After”. A CAAP Grant from the Department of
Cultural Affairs (Chicago, IL) and the IAS-PO Grant from the Illinois Arts Council
(Chicago, IL)
The Mississippi Arts Commission is a state agency serving more than two million people
through grants and special initiatives that enhance communities, assist artists and arts
organizations, promote arts education and celebrate Mississippi’s cultural heritage.
MAC is funded by the Mississippi Legislature, the National Endowment for the Arts, the
Mississippi Endowment for the Arts at the Community Foundation for Mississippi and
other private sources. For more information, visit www.arts.ms.gov.

$35 M. Velázquez Portrait of Spanish Queen Pulled By Sotheby’s – ARTnews.com
A Diego Velázquez portrait of Spanish Queen Isabel de Borbón, which was expected to break the artist’s previous records, was quietly withdrawn from auction by Sotheby’s in New York.
The court painting, which has been owned by a private family trust in the US since 1978, was pulled due to “ongoing discussions” on behalf of the sellers. The painting did not appear in the auction house’s digital sales catalogue released on December 21.
There is speculation that a US museum may have put in an offer, however, Sotheby’s declined to comment, the Art Newspaper reported Friday. The 1620s painting was guaranteed by the auction house at $35 million in its upcoming Old Master sale on February 1.
The Isabel de Borbon portrait could be related to a famed Velázquez painting of her husband Philip IV held by the Prado in Madrid. It was taken from the Spanish royal collection in Madrid during Napoleon’s 1808 invasion and later appeared in a French noble collection in 1838. It eventually came into the hands of British banker and book collector Henry Huth. His relatives held it until 1950, when the piece was last at auction.
High-quality works by Velázquez are typically found in royal or museum collections and are rarely sold in public auctions. The price tag and good condition reflect this singularity. If sold, the work would more than double the 17th-century Spanish painter’s current $16.9 million auction record.  ...

WOII - Week 1: Phenomenology
In our recent lecture, we delved into the philosophical concept of 'Phenomenology,' it is a philosophical approach that focuses on the study of conscious experience from the first-person perspective. Phenomenology seeks to understand the essence and structures of lived experiences, exploring how individuals perceive and make sense of the world around them (Mambrol, 2020).
Armed with this fresh insight, we embarked on a photographic exploration throughout the school, each tasked with capturing various thematic elements. I was drawn to the theme of "time".
Tumblr media
Subsequently, we took turns presenting our individual interpretations of the concepts "time" and "shadow," and I was deeply moved by James' portrayal of "shadow."
Tumblr media
Phenomenology emphasises the significance of emotional resonance in design, a principle that Shigeo Fukuda masterfully embodies in his work. His posters not only captivate viewers with their visual illusions but also provoke thought and stir emotions, fostering a profound connection between the audience and the message conveyed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Furthermore, having an understanding of phenomenology is also beneficial for my work in craft and studio endeavours as it prompts me to consider not only my own perceptions but also those of the audience. For example, while crafting trading cards for studio projects, I am challenged to tap into the creative vision of my selected designer and illustrator, striving to replicate the same effects.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In conclusion, the principles of phenomenology encourage me to explore further into the subjective experiences of those interacting with my designs, fostering a more thoughtful and intentional approach to visual communication. By embracing this perspective, I can create designs that resonate with and engage my audience effectively.
