So the past few weeks I’ve been a bit bored, so I tried to help the phandom by identifying Japanese Christines. I know it’s hard since the names are never labelled with the pictures. So I’d like to give you a preview of what I found the past week. Oh and please don’t look at the editing/font, it’s just a preview ;)

I also want to thank @operafantomet​ for the huge collection of Japan scans/pictures she has provided here on tumblr over the years. They’ve been a lot of help:)

hello glass! two part question here: are gina beck and maria coyne the only ones to have played both glinda in wicked and christine daae in PotO, or is there more? then, which christines do you think would make great glindas, and which glindas do you think would make good christines? sorry if that was confusingly worded haha. thank you!

Hello! They are far from the only two Christines to have played both roles. Sara Jean Ford has done it before. Lisa-Anne Wood is one recent addition, as is Celia Hottenstein. From international productions, there's been Kim So Hyun, Valerie Link, and a bunch from Japan: Miyuki Numao, Tamami Sai / Choi Hyun Joo, Hanayo Kimura, and Asako Tomada (potentially more, since I don't know the Japanese casts well). If you count Love Never Dies, then Lucy van Gasse and Erin Rose (formerly Erin Hasan) has performed as Christine in LND and as Glinda as well.

And someone will probably tell me to make sure to include Carmen Cusack, though she was a Christine and Elphaba. And I suppose while we're at it Megumi Hamada has played Christine in LND and Elphaba in Wicked, and we've also got the interesting cases of Maike Switzer and Monika Sommerova, Christine actresses who have played Nessarose (though several Glinda understudies also understudied for Nessarose). And if you count Yeston and Kopit's Phantom, then original Glinda Kristin Chenoweth has played both Christine and Glinda as well.

I made a small post here about some Glindas (among others) that would make good Christines. I don't really have much thought about the other way around, since I'm not all that knowledgeable about the requirements of being Glinda. Anyway, hope that helps!

On November 15, 2012 the Japanese POTO cast participated in the celebrations of the production company Shiki. They marked their 60th anniverary with what would be a month-long celebration of musical theatre, and first out was The Phantom of the Opera. Apart from performing music from the musical, the Phantom was also responsible for giving the Christmas tree some... illumination... (last photo). There were also costumes and props on display.

Cast was Osamu Takai (Phantom), Morito Masuda (André) and Aoki Aoki (Firmin). I’m not sure who the Christine and Raoul is - possibly Asako Tomada and Kitazawa Yusuke?

Yeah... another Wicked post... In honor of Wicked becoming the 7th longest running show on Broadway I figured why not take a look at some of the actresses who have changed us “For Good.”

Is there any Christians who played Glinda or Elphaba?

I assume you mean Christines, and yes, though there’s definitely been more Glinda/Christine pairings than Christine/Elphaba.

For the latter, the only one I can think of is Carmen Cusack. For the former, there are several: Gina Beck, Kim So Hyun, Asako Tomada, Miyuki Numao (and possibly many more Japanese actresses, I’m very out of date when it comes to the Japanese cast), Valerie Link, Sara Jean Ford, Maria Coyne, Lisa-Anne Wood, and Celia Hottenstein (though she’s a recent addition to the cast so I don’t know if she’s actually gone on as Glinda, but she’s designated as an understudy for the role so it’s only a matter of time).

Also, if you count Christines from Love Never Dies, there’s Lucy van Gasse and Erin Hasan, who have both played Glinda, as well as Megumi Hamada, though she played Elphaba. Oh, and even though you didn’t ask for the specific role, Maike Switzer and Monika Sommerova have played Nessarose (and apparently Maria Coyne was an understudy for that role as well?).

I’m sure there’s more, particularly from the Asian productions, where it’s harder to find extensive cast lists, but I think I hit most of the big ones? And for funsies, even though she’s never played the role before, here’s former World Tour Christine Emilie Lynn singing ‘Defying Gravity’. Cause why not.
