More specifically, the full release of Pizza Tower! This wonderful game has been a large part of my life in this past year, such as being the sole reason why rats are one of my favorite animals now alongside influencing my artstyle to be a smidge toonier!
I just had to draw a little something for it, and it's definitely one of the most detail-intensive Pizza Tower drawings I've made yet! 💙✨

I use Aseprite for desktop! It's a dedicated pixel art + animation program and I love everything about it. Tons of plug-ins and scripts for it on Itch and GitHub to cover extra features if you need more than what it comes with.
Used stinky Photoshop and my precious Paint Tool Sai (still use it for starting off larger pieces sometimes) when I was first learning, but if you're asking because you wanna try pixel art yourself then pretty much any art program will do. Anti-alias turned off + tiniest brush size possible!

My last reblog reminded me of a related thing.
Converting GIF to MP4.
I mentioned that sometimes turning an image into a WebP file actually makes it larger, right? And that it turned crisp pixel art into jpeg vomit?
GIF to MP4 is perhaps even worse.
For video clips, you can make a point, sure. I won't argue, it works great on those. Different compression systems for different inputs, y'know? Right tool for the right job?
But then you drop some nice pixel animation on Twitter or whatnot. The gif was of manageable size to begin with and crisp as hell. And Twitter converts it to mp4, you get weird quirks involving the final frame's duration which is why Aseprite has a checkbox in the gif exporter to compensate, your crisp pixels fucking melt, and if you're particularly unlucky the mp4 version will be bigger than the original, completely subverting the bandwidth argument.
But wait there's more!
They say gif files are always auto-play. That's technically true, there's no such thing as a play button on a gif... or is there? Discord for example extracts the first frame to a PNG and so long as the gif isn't fully scrolled into view it actually shows that static image instead, switching between two files as you scroll it in and out of view. So why not extract a static image, have a little play button, and when you click it the gif is swapped in? You can't pause it, but you can prevent auto-playing!
Argument two, related to the auto-play thing: shocking trap clips. First frame or two is fine, then suddenly blam you get to see something horrific instead. Well. Guess what?
It doesn't matter if it's auto-playing or not, if it's a gif or an mp4. Shocking trap clips are shocking traps. They're just one or two levels above trying to download a 640x480 picture of Anna Kournikova on a 56k dial-up connection only to find from the neck down they replaced her with a horrifying monster. And that is a single image.

Okay so, got any advice on making pixel art? Anything at all?
I want to draw two of my characters in a style of the game they're based from, which happens to be a high-detail pixel game called Coffee Talk (for example, this is Freya, one of the regulars)
I don't have much experience with pixel art so far, I have some, but only minor stuff.

Sure!
If I was planning to do this, I would first search for a clean reference of a character from the game. That means without any jpeg artifacts and not blurry at all.
Then i would bring it into Aseprite (or whatever program you use), take my marquee select tool (M in Aseprite) and select one "pixel".

Doing this I can see that the pixel is actualy 2x2 px, which means the base sprite was scaled up 2x. So I will go to my image settings and scale the image by 50% (ctrl + alt + i) so I can have the art at its original resolution.

This is much much easier to work with and study for a pixel artist.

Studying from the original and mimicing stylistic choices when I can
You could also just edit the sprite (this is totally ok to do as long as youre honest/upfront about it, just like any study. So many beginner artists get started with sprite editing, its such a great way of learning).
I want to make a special mention to this website called Spriters Resource, if you're looking for game sprites (especially retro stuff) you may find it here!
If i don't know how to do something i always go on spriters resource and search games I like, so I can learn how they do it. This website is a goldmine for beginner pixel artists

i used a website called https://www.dcode.fr/caesar-cipher utilizing the decrypt (brute force) option when trying to translate the code
i swear i will crash out if that's actually the decoded version of that text but if it is i suppose i was the first one to decode it that way

I was requested by a friend to put together a quick MSPaint spriting tutorial. Since a lot of these tricks are probably lost to crusty 2000s Youtube videos and Deviantart posts, uhhh... Have a new one!
Brought to u with love from a dedicated Fire Emblem/Pokemon/A bunch of other JRPGs spriter. All non-official sprites featured in this tutorial are my work

Meet Mina!
Kinda like Astra, I figured I'd try to make Mina's wiki look similar. More in the way that I've seen the Block Tales fandom wiki but still similar. (I also added moveset to give insight on how I tend to play, minus items and cards)

I mentioned before that she's meant to look like an older version of Niko from Oneshot and has ties to them too as an older sister to them- (Because I can't afford a new avatar) I also managed to make a little banner for her that I'm really proud of in Aseprite :D

Mina is the unseen hero. Starting her journey with insecurities and an anxious gut feeling telling her to be as fast as possible and ending it with a new spark in her eyes and a new life worth living.

Mina is a cat-like person in an adventurous outfit composed of a light brown hat with ears poking through, a purple scarf, a brown jacket and dark brown(almost black) jeans. She has a cat-like face with yellow eyes and whiskers that match her blue-purple(ish) hair.
Moveset
Ignite (RANGED)
Mina throws a stick of dynamite at her target from any distance, inflicting 4 Damage with a 30% chance of applying Burn for 3 turns.
Venomshank (RANGED)
Mina swings the Venomshank forth to inflict 2 Damage and Poison on all enemies for 3 turns.
Rocket Shoes (MELEE)
Mina runs at her target and jumps to activate her rocket shoes, hitting her target to do 2 Damage with a 100% chance of applying Burn and Defence Down for 3 turns.
Ice Dagger (SELF)
Mina uses the ice dagger to heal 20% of her max HP and SP.
Call: Red & Blue (SELF)
Mina calls forth Red & Blue to assist in battle.

Trivia
Mina uses She/They mainly but couldn't care less how someone else refers to her. She won't correct it unless it's serious.
After a battle where Red & Blue assisted, Mina sends them off with praise, a hug and a snack for each of them to enjoy on their way home.
With the twins, Mina sees herself using her experience from being the big sister to treat them as if they were her own family. She has trouble focusing on her battle strategies when she sees them get hurt but doesn't want to look overprotective, instead going on with the fight as normal and shooting other enemies in the room a death glare when they're gone.
With Griefer, Mina sees a reflection of how she used to be before Niko became part of her life. A rebellious teenager who later changes to be better. Although for her it was to be a good role model to Niko.
Mina still gets nightmares about the day she and Niko had been playing hide and seek and Niko disappeared forever. She blames herself because she assumes something happened while Niko was trying to hide and they were taken because of her carelessness.
Mina tends to quote memes she remembered but is never entirely sure if they're relevant in this new 'present', often leading to confusion and embarrassment.
Although affectionate, Mina is rather closed off about her past and true emotions. She doesn't want to be a burden and doesn't know who to trust.
Mina tends to come off as flirtatious or complimentary at times due to her more honest nature. Although her actual flirting attempts would be absolutely horrendous...
Mina kinda got adopted by Shedletsky after finding out she never really had a dad. (Missing)

A little while ago someone brought up the dithering and I ended up just writing a [ small tutorial ] since the dithering gets mentioned so often. For the recent .GIF I posted, the dithering was done through Aseprite.

Another Deltarune Dream for the pile...
I've been blessed... with one of those... The DR related nightmare And, I need to talk about it before it all slips away
I call it the DELTARUNE: Continuity (small ch 3 n 4 spoilers)
So, in this nightmare… I was in Ch 2, trying to get Spamton Neo, but instead of getting the Empty Disk from the basement, you went back to the alleyway you found Spamton, you open his garbage bin home, and inside there's piles of trash
Every time you Interact you remove a garbage bag, until there's that little item white star shine, at which point you get the empty disk… But you can keep going. Removing trash. At which point, after a while, there's a yellow item star.
If you grab it… a really fucking weird sound plays, I could not remember what it sounded like, but I recall it being anxiety inducing.
If you went to your key items after grabbing that item… welcome to hell.
The entire screen goes black, and the music stops, with the only things on screen being the heart, and the items DELTA RUNE DELTA CONTINUITY. (And for some reason the first Rune and the second Delta were highlighted in yellow)
If you exited from the menu, you were now stuck in this blue rectangular platform, and the background was a navy blue with the fucking CatPettz cat animation in different size going to the left at fucking light speed.
On the platform there was also Noelle, with her scared sprite, and pink and yellow eyes. And our good boy Spamton himseeeelf. Interacting with either of them made, nothing happen.
If you went into the menu again, the UI now looked like the platform you were standing on, light blue with a light yellow border. And the key items are talked about were still there. Also, forgot to mention, but Susie and Ralsei were still following Kris up to this point.
If you got close to Noelle, and used the CONTINUITY key item. The screen went black. And a green UT Styled Battle button with the words CONTINUITY with a green soul selecting it. Bellow that, the four UT battle buttons (fight act item and mercy) appeared, all in Green. Like the CONTINUITY button was the enemy.
I choose Green. Which made the screen go black again, and text to appear which said...
"Is this the fate you want?" I selected No. And went back to the UT styled battle. I selected Item and text appeared saying "I won't use items on it" Then I just used Fight.
And IMMEDIATELY I got transported to this fucking, nightmare reality, very similar to Yummi Nikki, where Kris, and Kris alone, was standing on top of some cloud which i think was made up of collages of like, magazines and shit. Meanwhile the background was only what I could describe as, the Marty red sky from Lisa the first, but purple, and now with fucking IMAGE_FRIEND
Next to Kris was a glitchy as fuck save point. Dream me didn't interact with it. I went down, and there was Spamton again, but in a different art style, also looking like something out of Yummi Nikki
Going up, there was a Water Cooler enemy, but extremely bitcrushed, like if you took the normal Water Cooler sprite and set it to 50% on Aseprite. It saw Kris charged forward, started a battle, the theme was regular Vapor Buster.
The Acts were ActNice, ActCool, and just Act (which required Susie, which wasn't in the party. But somehow was still usable since it was white??) For some reason, Kris was at 15 HP. And also for some reason, they had a lighter blue bar under their HP??? Prob the Lisa brainrot taking over In the items there were four items
3 Guards, which the description said - Protect, use Q or E to adjust radius (????????) And 1 SPAMTONAID, which the description said - SPAMTON WILL HELP AND AID AND SOON IT'LL BE OKAY. The description also had the entire Spamton overworld sprite right next to it
I used a Guard, and a 3 yellow bubbles, which seemed to have been using sprites from stock photos, like Omega Flowey, appeared behind Kris, and like the description said, I could hold Q or E to make them bigger or smaller
The Water Cooler attacks and the attack was the same as the regular Water Cooler enemy, only this the bullets were blue. But they still dealt damage even if you weren't moving. I died. Then
Text in uppercase said: WOULD YOU LIKE TO TRY AGAIN
I hit yes, and the battle restarted with me now with ONE HP. I used another Guard, and somehow was able to survive the attack, I used BeCool on one of the three Water Coolers. Then I died the very next attack. Now the text said "THIS IS YOUR LAST GUARD. IF YOU DIE AGAIN, YOU WILL NOT BE ASKED"
I tried again, this time coming back into battle with full HP I used a guard, survived the attack….
Then I woke up. Then I started writing this.
what the fuck.

Hello everyone! It’s time for another development blog!
Thank you very much for the support I received in the previous post! This time, the focus will be pixel art! In particular, we will talk about the creative process behind the new sprites of the remake.
As some of you may already know, MerúM is the artist in charge of the pixel art in Midnight Train. Let’s ask him some questions about it!
🌙🚂 Interview with MerúM 🚂🌙
Lydia: First of all, could you introduce yourself?
MerúM: I call myself MerúM. I am the pixel artist of Midnight Train: New Moon, and I am in charge of the sprites and animations of the characters. I also worked on Aria's Story and the previous version of Midnight Train doing the same job.

Lydia: The character sprites in Midnight Train: New Moon look quite different from the original version. Is there any reason for this change?
MerúM: Well, before the switch to RPG Maker MV, I was already working on the new sprites and animations for the Midnight Train remake. However, once we changed programs, I noticed that the character sprites were very small compared to the current screen dimensions. I decided that this was a perfect opportunity to redo the sprites from scratch as well, increasing their dimensions and detailing them more than the previous version allowed me, without wanting to move them too far away from the previous chibi style.
Lydia: Right now, you already completed all the characters sprites for chapter 1. Was there any challenge or something you’re really proud about? 
MerúM: After changing the sprites, the expressiveness of the characters has improved a lot. Characters now have many more unique animations and expressions, solidifying their personalities. I think this new style works very well with the aesthetic of Midnight Train’s world and makes them look quite unique from character to character.
Lydia: Could you describe your workflow and what programs you use to create your work?
MerúM: For my sprites, I use Aseprite. Before starting with a specific character, I tend to draw their base sprites and their walking animations. After this, I receive a list of events that will occur in the game related to those characters, and then I create the sprites and animations that fit into said scenes using the base sprites as a reference. Usually, I am in charge of designing how these scenes will look in pixel art, but with some more specific or complicated scenes I have received a quick sketch of how the sprite/animation should look like as a visual aid, and thus arrive at the version that best suits the scene.

Lydia: I’m just curious about something… Who is your favorite character from Midnight Train?
MerúM: I think all the characters are fantastic, maybe I could consider Neil Lawton my favorite. I think, in the end, we should all be a little like Neil. Even if you are afraid at first to move forward, just do it. This is what Neil does, he may be afraid, but he faces this fear to survive.
Lydia: Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
MerúM: What else could I say? I think Midnight Train: New Moon brings a story that will appeal to anyone who is passionate about mystery stories. By the way, it's fun to mention that in addition to Justice, Purity and some secondary characters, I have been the main designer of Larissa, one of the new characters in this remake. I hope you play Midnight Train: New Moon and get to know her!

I hope you liked the interview with MerúM! I wouldn't have been able to create my games without his help, as I'm pretty bad at pixel art. I'm excited to see all the sprites he will create for chapter 2! I personally can't wait to see Apollo's animations. Now, I want to report about the development of the game. I’m almost finished with the maps of chapter 2, so I expect to start programming this chapter very soon! Literally, there is only one map left…! I wanted to add a new puzzle to this map, so I’ve been stuck brainstorming ideas… Ahh, it feels like facing a final boss before proceeding to the next step.

had an epiphany today. aseprite drawing tablet settings are pretty rough right now. so its hard for me to mimic the line variance that roomerang's characters have. for some reason i never thought to just. draw over my lines again but slightly off. it essentially does what i want to do really easy! anyways, on the left is the new version. a lot better than the old one i did! at least i think so.
addendum: i like just realized i forgot to mention the new one is mostly traced. the work is not officially my own outside of the pose. this was made largely for practice and learning.

Accidental Betrayal [A Hat in Time]
Graphics made in Aseprite. Animated in Godot.
My brother and I played through A Hat in Time co-op. It's a 3D platformer like Super Mario 64. And, uh, this happened. 😁He (Hat Kid; purple) attacked an enemy but accidentally knocked me (Bow Kid; green) off the stage in doing so. Thought it was funny and so decided to animate it.
I really underestimated how long this would take. 😭 There's ~50 unique frames of animation and 25 actual animations. And getting all the timings right is made more complex by relying on gravity physics to make the jumps look right. I think it turned out semi-okay but still has a lot of shortcomings. There's too many things going on at once and not enough pauses early on to let people focus on each part, but it would take too much time to adjust the timings, since they're all relative and there's 3 characters to keep in sync. 😭 I want to take a break from physics-based animations after this…
On the plus side, this animation's script code is much better at handling multiple things occurring at the same time, compared to the more crude Eastward one last week. I got more familiar with using Godot and animating with it. And I got some experience with telling a story without words. ^^
EDIT: I forgot to mention that A Hat in Time is a special game for me. This wasn't my first time playing it. I followed its development for years ever since their kickstarter trailer came out, and it was the game that made me realize Indie GameDev was a thing. I'd been toying with game dev before then, but seeing it happen and done so well was a huge motivator for me.
