mahalia’s parents were hippies, but lia doesn’t like to refer to them that way-- to her, they were just individuals. her father was a pinoy immigrant who moved to the states when he was a kid, and her mother and american. she was raised on music, and was raised with the belief that everyone was equal, and that she could be and do anything she wanted. and being raised in an environment like that meant that she had confidence.

she started playing the guitar when she was seven years old-- her mother was a music teacher, and her father did guitar work for soundtracks and demos, so they both taught her as soon as she asked to learn. at her request, she was surrounded by music-- posters of female rock icons plastered her walls. lia had a particular love for joan jett, but the whole look and sound was everything to lia. 

she didn’t finish high school, dropping out when she was sixteen to start touring, with the support of her parents. she’d been in and out of bands since middle school, and they knew that’s where here passion and future lay. forcing her to learn high level math wasn’t going to help her in the future, so they weren’t going to hold her down with it. by the time she was eighteen, she was touring the world-- not in a band of her own, but as a supplemental guitarist for artists who typically didn’t have live musicians.

that was her gateway into kpop. all of these idols were singers, but they were dancers and performers. and while for music shows, a music track playing behind them was fine, when a lot of these groups went on tour, they needed a band to support them. she bounced from group to group again, going where she was needed when she was needed, before radioactive found her and she got a solid gig with them-- she was the onstage guitarist for all of radioactives groups, but primarily empire. and because the groups were so big, it was a steady paychque. and she got a bit of a cult following as the fun green-haired girl at concerts.

all good things come to an end, though, and when radioactive crumbled, lia was out on her ass. she’d made enough connections to keep her afloat, however, and was approached by head honcho kenneth kwak himself with an interesting proposition. honestly, if lia hadn’t been desperately in need of money, she probably wouldn’t have said yes-- she was a guitarist, not an idol. even if she got to play guitar in a group, she absolutely didn’t want to end up playing watered down idol pop like journey. no offence to them. and when she was pointed in the direction of girlstory, she wanted to be part of it even less-- you meant to tell her she was going to be in the lineup of a bubblegum poppy girl group?

lia’s so grateful that she took the opportunity, though. burnout’s sound is everything she’s always loved, and after all these years of playing idol songs at concerts, she finally gets to do what she loves. she’s a bit of an oddball, and absolutely stands out like a sore thumb during variety promotions-- not only does she have to cover all her tattoos and end up looking like a mummy, but even her green hair and piercings turn heads. funny enough, she’s probably the strongest at english in the group, so whenever burnout interacts with international fans, lia’s at the forefront (being the face of the group instead of just standing behind the performers and nodding is so, so strange). 

while not technically an idol, there are enough restraints on lia from liberty that sometimes she has second thoughts. she’s a huge activist, and speaks her mind about most things, so holding her tongue is hard. but she likes her groupmates, believe it or not. and she likes the sound. so for now, she’s staying.
