In the early hours of the morning, a 15 year old girl trudged out to the living room, pillow in hand, before light had even broken out over the horizon. It was 4:00 a.m. but the room was charged with a fervent sort of energy, a giddiness that finaly peaked when Birendra Krishna Bhadra's sonorous voice rang out with the first words- "আশ্বিনের শারদপ্রাতে".
It was মহালয়া- the beginning of 'দেবীপক্ষ'. I do not think that any words, except the ones privately spoken by each Bengali to Ma, of his wishes and woes, hopes and sorrows in silent prayers between the chants during Ashtami's Anjali, can convey the feeling in his heart as one by one, all the houses are filled with 'আগমনীর গান' while the sun slowly creeps into sight like a sleepy child unable to stay away from the excitement of all his aunts, uncles and older cousins huddled outside infront of the radio with tumblers full of steaming, milky tea.
There is a certain quiet beauty in the knowledge that every year since 1931 when the show first aired, Bengalis within Kolkata and without have been dutifully waking up at 4 o'clock to welome our Maa home. A five year old girl rubs her drowsy eyes infront of the radio as she hears the voice she will learn to eagerly wait for throughout the year when she grows older, for the first time. Lying propped up on the cushions in her hospital bed, much to the protest of her nurses, her great grandmother ruefully smiles when she realises that it would be her last time, and for a glorious hour and a half, the pain of the cancer in her liver bows down to মহিষাসুরমর্দিনী. A large joint family gathers in front of the antique record player, with endless cups of tea and aluminium tins of biscuits under the arches of their ancestral home in North Calcutta, where only a few days later, they would welcome their very own Ma Durga. In the servants' quarters, the 'rannar thakur' sits on the front steps of his tin roofed home with his thin daughter and thinner wife, and his stomach's grumbles of hunger are drowned out by the music carrying from the record player. A Muslim boy, not daring to tell his orthodox father, cycles to his Hindu classmate's house before the sun rises to catch the first strains of Aagomoni. For মহালয়া does not merely mark the coming of Ma, it marks the advent of hope in the form of our ten-armed Goddess for every Bengali, irrespective of his age, social standing or religion. Even if it may be just an old recording playing from some houses on the streets, to me and to any Bengali, it seems more like on one magical day every year, all the clouds in the sky strike up a wonderful heavenly orchestra of voices, filling all the empty spaces in the sky, till Ma Durga herself comes to fill up the place waiting for her on the mandaps and in our hearts.

The Month of Shravan and its Significance
Today is Shravana Krishna Ashtami, the eleventh day of Shravana masam (month). The month of Shravan is the fourth month in the Hindu calendar and falls in the western months of August and September. This month has a lot of spiritual significance and is considered auspicious for Hindus for many reasons.
Samudra Manthan
According to the Puranas (holy texts), it was during this month that the Devathas (Gods) and Asuras (demons) churned the ocean in search of amrit (nectar). Although the churning of the ocean gave them the amrit, it also gave them poison. Because the Devathas did not know what to do with the poison, they went to Lord Shiva for help. Lor Shiva swallowed the poison and stored it in his throat which for which he got the name, Neelkant (blue throat). This is why Shravana masam is important for the devotees of Lord Shiva.
Sola Somvaar Vrat
The Sola Somvaar Vrat is another reason why Shravana masam is important for the devotees of Lord Shiva. Those who want to do the Sola Somvaar Vrat (16 Mondays) usually start on the first Monday of Shravana masam and complete it on the last Monday Karthika masam. This vrat is mostly observed by unmarried women who want to be married to the man of their dreams. But married women can observe this vrat, too, for better health or fulfilment of their wishes. For this vrat, women fast all morning and afternoon and break it in the evening after doing pooja for Lord Shiva.
Mangala Gauri
The Mangala Gauri Vratham (pooja) is performed by married women for health, prosperity, and the long life of their husband. It is also performed for a happy married life. This vratham is only performed in Shravana masam on Tuesdays. After the pooja, a minimum of 5 married women are invited home for Haldi and Kumkum. The traditions for this pooja vary based on each family.
Varalakshmi Vratham
In South India, Varalakshmi Vratham (pooja) is performed by married women on the Friday before Poornima (full moon). Vara Maha Lakshmi or Varalakshmi is the Goddess of wealth and prosperity. Women perform this pooja every year for the blessings of the Goddess on them, their husband, and children.
Raksha Bandhan
Raksha Bandhan is day that is celebrated all across India to honor the pure bond between brother and sister. On the day of Raksha Bandhan, the sister ties a rakhi on her brother’s wrist, the brother presents her with a gift, and they both promise to protect each other no matter what the circumstances.
Krishna Janmashtami
Shravana Krishna Ashtami, according to the Puranas, is the day Lord Krishna was born. Other names for this day are Krishnashtami, Krishna Janmashtami, or Janmashtami. On this day, Hindu families decorate their home with rangoli and make food the Lord Krishna likes.

Same idiot here for information on what are like the culturally appropriate things to do for pujo in Bengal
(non Bengalis here's your guide to act native to pujo madness)
So, what IS pujo?
Following mahalaya, (if you don't know what that is, here's the infodump i did;)
Devispaksha begins. The goddess is returning home. There's a different side to this story however.
THE MYTHOLOGICAL SIDE AND WHAT THAT GREEN THING YOU SEE AT DURGA'S FEET IN EVERY PANDAL IS.
So, mahishasur was believed to be a monster. He one day decided to go into the depths of a jungle and sit for an intense tapasya. So he did. He prayed to lord brahma for months and months. He was covered in ivy and moss, Insects grew on him but he stayed firm. For months he prayed, without food or water. Brahma, impressed by his tenacity appeared before him. Mahishasur asked for the boon of immortality. Brahma granted him his wish. "You shall not be killed by any man in heaven, hell, or earth." Strengthened by his boon, Mahishasur attacked Indrapuri, The court of God Indra. He captured his throne. The gods turned to brahma for help. Brahma, on realising his mistake, went to consult with Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. the gods decided that as mahishasur couldn't be destroyed by any MAN, they needed to create a female source of power to end him. The gods gathered. They collected their powers and from the blinding lights, emerged the goddess of feminine power-Durga. She was bestowed with weapons; she was given strikingly beautiful features, And then, armed with a hundred hands and skilled in hundred different weapons, she went on the fight. Mahishasur, initially enthralled by her beauty, proposed to marry her; but she declared war. The battle went on for days. At the end, Durga's vahan, the lion pounced on the asur, Durga stepped on him and piercing her trishul through his heart, emerged victorious. The evil was dead. The power that laid within the flashing eyes of the goddess had won.

GOT IT. SO WHAT DO I DO DURING PUJAS?
Puja celebrations usually don't start in it's full-fledged glory till atleast the fifth day (panchami). it continues till the tenth day (Dashami).
If you live in kolkata during pujas, GO OUT. The whole city is bedazzled in lights, there are fairs through the city. Nobody sits at home; everybody is out on the roads sparkling and dressed to nines. Wear your best dresses and walk through the streets at night till the sun comes up. The most major part of pujas is pandal hopping. Thousands of pandals with budgets of crores are made at various spots in the city. These are pandals as huge as marketplaces; each with different themes. There are competitions every year between them, based on which pandal had the best durga idol, which had the best theme, which had the best structure, etc.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pujas are the time when Kaash ful(the white flowers I clicked last year in the fourth picture) are in full bloom, there are lotuses in bloom in ponds; nature is bedecked in her best jewels.
Keeping in spirit with the goddess returning home, bengalis usually return home during pujas. it's a time to visit families, revsit old friends and have complete unabashed fun. It's time to gobble down on junk foods as much as you can. Oh and girls, on Ashtami(or the eighth day), make sure you put on your best sarees for arti and bedazzle the guys on the road;)
Despite the intense commercialization of the pujas that has happened in the last few years, it still remains an extremely core emotion for us bengalis. It's the time of homecoming, of taking a break and reconnecting to our roots every year. it's the time of visiting family, of recreating old memories, of re-living new and old romances. It's the whole world celebrating you coming home. It's the world celebrating the power that lays inside every woman- a mother, a sister, a wife.

Pranam
Firstly, I am  conveying my  humble gratitude for your articles on what is a superb website -  I am deeply grateful.  As you may have already perceived, there has been a rise in Bhairava tattva of late.  There’s an upsurge in Bhairava  related practices not just in Bharat but around the world. I am part of Telegram group created by Bhairava Sadhakas. On that site, we collectively pitch in and take a sankalp to do x number of rounds of  a rudraksha mala of a basic mantra ( OM Bhairavaya Namaha) on Kalabhairava Ashtami tithi monthly . There purpose the the japa is solely for Dharma raksha  of Bharat as a geographical location ( even for non Indian citizens like myself). We are cognisant of the geopoloitlcal tensions in the subcontinent and the pressures that India faces as a nation defending its borders against neighbouring countries. The end goal is for the awakening of Bhairava as a kshetrapala of India and the defeat of adharmic enemies.
There are a few moderators of the Telegram group who have to deal with a phenomenal amount of questions related to vishesh and nitya sadhana of Bhairava. On that group, many devotees have seeked to find out the word by word meaning of the Shri Batuka Bhairava Brahma kavacham. Why specifically this kavacham? This is because the proprietor of the group ( Rajarshi Nandy ) has suggested we do this kavacham once we have become firmly rooted in basic Bhairava nama mantra sadhana. We have been directed by the group moderators to  search on google ourselves to decipher  the meaning of it. I have combed through the web extensively and nowhere is there any mention of the meaning of this  kavacham, let alone the related nyasam prior to chanting the kavacham. This telegram group does not offer any mantra deeksha or initiations.
I along with the rest of the devotees  on the Telegram group would like to take our sadhana to a new level with gaining an in depth meaning of the kavacham. I would be very grateful if you could post the meaning of it on your website along with any related nyasam. I wish to declare that I don't have a physical Guru at the moment and have taken Sri Batuka Bhairava as my devata Guru for now until I source  a physical Guru. I have used this webpage from another website as a guidelines for finding a suitable Guru: https://manblunder.com/articlesview/qualities-of-a-guru Until I find a suitable Guru, I rely on expositions from excellent websites such as yours to broaden my knowledge on Sanatana Dharma.
Further to this, if you offer mantra deeksha or initiation,I would be grateful if you could offer initiation of the above Kavacham along with the Batuka Bhairava Apadudhharana Beej mantra. I can be contacted at:
I will be happy to purchase any book of yours related to the initiation of the above kavacham if I am required to purchase any books.
Thank you kindly for considering my request
Kind regards
Rajdev
Thank you for the question , vatuka bhairava brahma kavacha is found in batuka bhairavopasanadhyaya in brahad jyotisharnava. That text says that this kavacha is from Rudyard Yamaha tantra
The text only gives rushyAdi nyAsa which is Bhairava Rishih ( touch the head) , anushtup chandah ( face - lip ) and vatuka bhairavo devata ( touch the heart )
Vatuka bhairava prasada sidhyarthe pAthe viniyogah ( namaskAra mudra)
I will try to write on this kavacha soon , currently working on translating another stotra .
Sorry to inform you that I don't provide deeksha , manblunder website has a page where you can contact senior sadhakas to get deeksha ( as you are familiar with the website.
I have translated texts like bhairava stavaraja, bhairava dashanama stotra, Kala bhairava ashtakam etc. You can find them in amazon.in
