Out of Prison Text and images: Karin For over a year everything concerning food has been nothing but a source of horrible anguish. Our teenage daughter’s serious eating disorder has stolen so much from us. One of the greatest losses has been the sensual aspects of food. Not just being a nutritious substance that we eat in order to maintain life and growth. Today is our first meal in freedom. A lunch, just the two of us, to reawaken our senses. What kind of divinely gifted meal will mark the comeback of lust for food in our life? The answer is fish. Poached back of cod with a generous amount of grated horseradish, fresh shrimp, dill, lemon, boiled potatoes and a substantial load of poured browned butter. This shared meal will symbolize the victory of a battle the two of us have fought for our daughter’s life. It feels right to eat from the same plate. An Astier de Villatte enamelled ceramic platter that normally is occupied by onions and ginger on our kitchen counter. It is long enough to reach us from both sides of the table. The white fish falls apart in flakes, the powerful horseradish tickles our noses and the butter merges the textures and flavors. We clean our plate, only leaving traces of the heavenly bliss. Order restored. Hallelujah.
