The start of something new

Part 1 of the pirate!au

On solem seas the winds a blow under our sails asunder, and through these tails of pirates woe and admirals they plunder, the wicked eye of yonder storm shant tear them from there sea-ward home, and Ruby rose and crescent sails beyond. A secret tail of lovers scar and beauty in the dark, respect the deep blue sea they must or drown in it there hearts will under, A Schnee it seems an even match for captain of the crescent rose, and one ship sank yet romance blossom through the heat of battle..

Ruby: so what do you think…? Were from different worlds Weiss-

Weiss: Captain Schnee to you, and once my sister finds you have me… she will show no mercy

Ruby: Your sister doesn't scare me, nor any who seek to block our quest, we seek only the most noble outcome for human and Faunus kind, your people of the kingdom Atlas do not see it as such… but I do not wish for us to be enemies, as I have proposed, as penance for a noble fight and surprise partnership, and as you lost your ship in our valiant battle, I have grown to respect you….  we shall adopt your crew as part of ours, and work towards a common goal *holds out hand to shake* you would become my first officer, a sign of unity and trust for both our peoples

Weiss: *looks at the outstretched hand, surprised by the kindness and trust she was shown by her fiercest enemy, this all had to be a joke, a ruse… there was no way this smiling bubbly… PIRATE could be the foe she had set out to slay… after a moment she noticed the concerned look on Ruby's face, she had been staring at her hand for almost a minute* I… I just don’t believe you would put so much trust in someone who was trying to kill you meer moments ago… this feels… surreal…

Ruby: look *sighs and leans back* were not like normal pirates, we don’t speak out fights, and my fleet is only here to protect the people, and to prevent organizations like Admiral Khan’s fleet from over running and murdering entire villages… we've lost too much already… *a sad look came into her eye as she stared out over the water through the window in the cabin* Captain Taurus has been plaguing my sister and her partner for ages, they had to separate because of Adams bloodlust… now I know not the fate of my own family… and with the navy that is of the darker worlds… the fleet of magic and evil, the creatures and armies of grimm *she said with a wince* … why would I hold any grudges towards you? Or your crew… you may come from a nation of bigots, and from a family of evil… but I do not see that in you, so please… just join me? For the sake of the world? Our forces combined… our knowledge…. We may actually have a chance for once, not to mention how nice it would be to have such a stunning lady aboard *she said breaking the solemn mood with a wink*

Weiss: *blushing ever so slightly* well… i'll give you this captain, you know all the right things to say, but let me get one thing straight, I will not attack Atlas ships, nor will I save you if my sister finds us *she reaches out to Ruby’s outstretched hand* but for now… you are our best shot at surviving out here… as much as it pains me to say it, me and my crew are at your disposal… but one thing?

Ruby: hmm? Of course, I never said anything about conditions, fire away

Weiss: we don’t have to change uniforms, we can keep our colors and fly them high, you may have taken our ship… well not YOU but you know… but we are still proud of who we are

Ruby: *nodding* of course,  and i am deeply sorry about your ship, I wouldn’t have done so much damage had I know about the creature.. But it is of no matter now, snowflake is unfortunately gone and we are victorious, shall we go on deck to make our announcement of our partnership?

Weiss: *smirking* when you say it like that it sounds like we're getting married

Ruby: *losing composure for a moment* I… well… aaaaaaaaoooon deck we go hehe *gestures with both hands to the door*

Weiss: rolling her eyes* you are such a dolt

*as they left the cabin Weiss was greeted by the breathtaking quadruple masted ship, long and with a consistent curve hidden under water, the blood red wood base contrasted with the black trim which had ornate patterns of gold within them, similar to her captain's outfit, it had 2 gun decks of varying lengths, and doors in both bow and stern for added cannon fire during a chance, never before has such a fast ship sailed in these waters, especially not one with a battering ram at the helm, her bow held a beautifully carved bouquet of roses in place of the normal figure head, and smaller roses ran along the sides colored in the aforementioned golden paint, the tall triple sailed masts held two Qrows nests at the top in which were sitting the lookouts ever vigilant, the ship felt… warm, almost like there was a glow about it, Weiss had seen it during their battle but especially now with the mingling crews of both ships only moments ago who had been at each others throats, patching each others wounds and sharing tails… Weiss’ crew seemed hesitant, as if they also saw this all as a type of joke… how were these people so kind…?*

Ruby: ATTENTION CREWS OF THE CRESCENT ROSE AND THE SNOWFLAKE, me and your captain have come to an accord, we shall combine our crews into equal parts, no man or woman, nor anyone in between is to be discriminated against. To the crew of the snowflake, many of our crew such as Ilia are faunus, they are to be treated no differently from your own friends, understand?

*there was some quiet murmuring*

Weiss: Anyone who disobeys that order shall answer DIRECTLY to me *she said confidently putting a hand on her sword*

Ruby:*looking proud already* Aye, and all those who wish to try their luck at the seas mercy shall be given a row boat and 4 weeks rations, the choice is yours

*a few members of the snowflake raised their hands to take that option, but not before being stared down by Weiss*

Weiss: cowards, bigoted cowards… begone from this sturdy vessel and may the sea be kind to you on your long journey!, excuse us, as me and your captain have much to discuss about our moving forward

Ruby: Here Here to our new order

*the two went back inside the cabin, before a knock on the door came*

Ruby: Ilia! How are you?

Ilia: hey captain, I just have a question, now that Weiss is first officer, what does that make me?

Ruby: sorry for the demotion, you deserve the best, but I just need to set an example

Ilia: I understand captain, I'm actually glad to be out of the spotlight for once haha, and Ms. Weiss, pleasure to meet you

Weiss: likewise Ilia, I hope we have more time together in the future.

*the door closes behind her*

Weiss: so what now, what's our plan, should we follow the trail of our attackers?

Ruby: I have my best man on it, Sun is up in the Qrows nest right now keeping tabs on their location, our current heading keeps us at a parallel course while out of sight due to the sun’s location, perfect cover

Weiss: then what is it that is left to discuss?

Ruby: *blushing* well, I actually hoped to get to know you better… we’ve kinda always been at each others throats and now… well, were free of all that

Weiss: I… am actually quite interested to get to know the infamous pirate Ruby Rose, the pirate that fights with a scythe… quite a unique story I believe  

Ruby: of that well see, I feel as though our journey's just begun

Weiss: then here's to see where our pearls shall take us next

Ruby: I would like that

Ilia: stealth assassin and intel operative, former first mate to Ruby

Sun: lookout and tracker, knows his ways around the ropes of the ship

Neptune: cook, he hates water se he stays where he won't have to look at it

Scarlet: one heck of a fighter, partner of sage and close confident to sun and neptune, former diplomat tuned pirate due to an incident with pudding at the headmasters wedding

Sage: tank and heavy lifter, uses a massive sword to shatter other ships, hes big and band and fears mice, we love him

Reese: tech specialist, found adrift on a device of her own design, her ship and crew were destroyed in an attack, so pledged her loyalty to our cause

Weiss Schnee: captain of the most advanced dust technology imbued ships currently available to new captains, a battle ship that was no match for captain rose

Klein Seaburn: Weiss personal assistant, has the strength of 7 men, skilled in different forms of combat, a true force to be reckoned with

Atlassian guards: those who weren't killed in the attack but let's face it are cannon fodder

Pilot boy: no one knows his real name, but he can steer a ship like no one's business

Yang Xio-Long: captain

Crew: Ciel: personal assistant to Penny, time keeper, expert at star maps and fishing

Personal detail: special guards posted to keep Penny safe, she usually protects THEM

Characters in TLOK ranked and evaluated

Started back in 2018... Time made me more lenient, I removed a lot of petty complaints I’d initially penned. Need to get this out of the way so I can post my new thoughts on my new shows ASAP!!  

Likability of protagonist: a parody video on youtube called Korra crazy and it’s such a fitting adjective I don’t know why I didn’t think of it sooner. She can be obnoxious but she really grew on me long after I finished the show. 8.5/10 

Character that you initially thought was cool: Lin in the beginning episodes, with Republic City also looking fresh and new as the background 

Coolest character: Varrick - who knew a shameless capitalist could be so attractive and relatable? 

Hottest characters, ranked: Wan! With that cocky smile! And Steven Yeun’s amazing voice! Suyin who’s pretty like a cat. Zaheer initially with his long hair and chiseled face 

Character that became hot: Korra!!!!

Characters that had potential but was wasted in the series: Bumi - we saw none of his past as military commander, it was hard to take him seriously. General Iroh, Fire Lord Izumi, everyone in the previous generation’s Team Avatar

Scariest character: Wan Shi Tong is even more evil now

Dumbest character (adorable): Bo Lin but he’s always trying

Dumbest character (stupid): Mako acting like doesn’t know what to do about having been born handsome and going around breaking hearts

Character with saddest fate: Amon deserves pity because he was raised by a cruel father. Also, while he lied to his followers, was playing into the existing sentiments of fear amongst the non-bending population... deserved more screen time 

Luckiest character: Asami surviving unscathed throughout Team Avatar adventures as well as disastrous business ventures with untrustworthy partners like Varrick

Character with sexiest voice: Suyin and of course Asami, as well as Wan

Best fighter of Team Avatar: it’s Korra  

Best fighter of the Airbenders Nation: Kai - talented and not of the Last Airbender’s bloodline

Best fighter from Zaofu: It’s a tie between Suyin and Kuvira 

Most creative fighters: Zaheer’s Red Lotus team

Fiercest fighter: Minghua. She’s unstoppable. I really enjoy ATLA/TLOK’s thing for designing characters with physical disabilities as the fiercest and most creative fighters on the battlefield 

Worst fighter: Lin, who continued to wear her metal armour despite facing electricity-based weapons. For some unknown reason she tends to forget that she can earth-bend? 

Overpowered character: Kuvira. I didn’t really buy how she defeated Korra in their first match... That or I didn’t enjoy how Korra lost her grip on the Avatar state so easily 

Underpowered characters: A lot of the benders on the side of good. Sans a few like Korra and Su-yin, the power gap between Team Avatar (Mako, Bo Lin) and their allies (Lin, Tenzin, Kya) versus Red Lotus is huge. Does that make things more realistic? I don’t watch shows very hard (and so don’t have much chance to nitpick) but the number of times I yelled at my screen when I felt like certain characters didn’t optimise their bending abilities as well as I would have had I been in their shoes was something of concern to me 

Character that you would befriend IRL: the whole Team Avatar gang. Korra first, Mako last 

Character that you would be bffs IRL with: Zhu Li! 

Character that you dislike but would actually get along with: Kuvira but I’ll keep her at a distance 

Character that you dislike and would dislike still in real-life: Unaloq... He’s too much

Character that you like but would definitely not get along with: hmm... Zaheer. Ultimately I’ll find him too radical in spite of everything else

Character that you would date: Bo Lin, General Iroh

Character that you would dump: Varrick, Mako

Character that you would Netflix and chill with: Mako

Character that you would marry: Wan! 

Characters that you would emulate: Wan’s endless desire to learn and persevere. And the life principles Suyin developed after adventuring throughout the world 

A character that you think you’re like: Kya, because she’s free-spirited and hates responsibility but ends up taking responsibility anyway! 

The character personality quizzes told you that you were like: the official Nickelodeon quiz gave me Korra, great at listening and helping those in need, but also making sure that her own opinion is received loud and clear  

Parts of characters that you’re made up of: Kya mentioned above, Korra’s recklessness and violent tendencies, Mako’s casual hubris, Bo Lin’s optimism

Same characters parts’ that you lack: I might not have Kya’s level of fear towards commitment, Korra’s confrontation-first policy, Mako’s angst, Bo Lin’s gullibility 

Characters that remind you of people you’re close to IRL: none 

What kind of character would you like to be in this universe?: I’ll like to be a (lightning) bender in Republic City to enjoy the social privileges that come with it

What kind of character would you realistically be in this universe?: Definitely someone living in Republic City. I would loathe getting ridiculous spirit vines and neighbours out of the goddamned blue, but I’ll come round to it eventually 

(If I was properly in the fandom I would have a lot more creative, non-canon answers for this section, but)

Canon romantic pairings, ranked: it was super nice to see Korra and Asami hold hands at the end, even though I would have liked to see more. Jinora and Kai, I always like a cheeky one paired with a level-headed one

Pairings with great chemistry: If Prince Wu were more handsome, would his ship with Mako be more popular? They mutually vibed with one another a lot more than the next pair did

Pairings with zero romantic chemistry: I didn’t get much romantic subtext between Korra and Asami for the most part of the show 

Would have best marriage: Probably Korra and Asami, since Asami is very loyal and Korra knows better after all that she’s been through 

Would divorce: Well it did happen to Tenzin and Lin. Still it would have been incredible to see them together, this ex-power couple 

Would make the best parents: Varrick and Zhu Li - great wealth plus great creativity 

Would have most comfortable home: Bo Lin and Opal. They’re both people who would want to take things easy

Should be single forever: Mako... Not that he deserves it, but it feels like this is the sort of fate a character like him would end up with 

Best friendship: Bo Lin and Ghazan. Absurd, given their respective circumstances, yet entirely plausible as we were shown. Wild, but pure

Best siblings: Mako and Bo Lin, and Kya towards her two brothers 

Excessive opinion time: 

Did Wan Shi Tong and Unaloq partake in spiritual copulation? Sorry to write that so pointedly. This theory isn’t mine but someone pointed out the physical similarities between Unaloq’s twins and Wan Shi Tong on the Internet, and not only do I love crack-yet-believable theories, I think Unaloq is truly capable of... doing the unspeakable thing

Korra should have been raised by the Red Lotus: Like “Korra: The Last Avatar”. Red Lotus are superior master benders and have very interesting philosophies. It’ll be something like: Korra’s connections to her past lives were severed from infanthood, but as she matures under the Red Lotus’ tutelage and partakes in missions out in the real world, she has encounters that challenges her worldviews, and so the story is about fighting the environment that she was nurtured in as she goes on the path to rediscover the light within her. 

I think this alternate would be a lot darker but at the same time bold, compelling and drastically different from ATLA -- so that people would find it harder to make petty comparisons between the two

TLOK should be getting the Netflix live-action adaptation: The villains with their amazingly complex and relevant ideals can be expanded with more content/better pacing than what the cartoon allocated to them. Also, the relationship drama amongst this cast of characters can easily be played up to attract fresh audiences, especially those that have watched Riverdale or CAOS 

MCU’s Captain Marvel = Korra??? I’m the kind of person that enjoys things even more by association with other things, and Captain Marvel is giving me a lot of Korra vibes, and so that’s why I’m super hyped for the upcoming movie!

As Atlas was unable to save herself from falling, she fell deep into the Abyss like a bullet crashing through water. Tendrils of inky black monsters found their around her limbs, restraining her from reaching the magical sword tattoo that rested between her shoulder blades.

Jury had found herself on hard cold flooring, alone and scared. The eyes surrounding her blinked in sync with her own, the pulsing of the mass of muscles and ink finding a rhythm from her heartbeat. She felt disconnected and lost, like her head had an intense fog clouding it. She wandered, unable to tell where she was headed. Van’s voice drifted in and out of her head, though she tried to seem present. They were like a son to her, even though she was barely 20. She didn’t want to worry them any further. Jasper called out next, panicking, of course. She tried to comfort them, but something was gnawing at her brain. Something was ringing alarm bells that Jasper wasn’t safe. Jury held back a sob, realizing just how screwed up the past few hours had been for her. She wanted to lay down and cry, let the monsters consume her and eat away at her flesh until she became nothing more than a memory.

But she couldn’t. No, Jury had to be strong. Van was safe to her knowledge, and Jasper was out there somewhere deep in the Abyss. Leiliana was also somewhere out there, and she wouldn’t stop until she found both of them. She picked herself up from the cold hard floor, brushing past the confusion of when she would’ve fallen to her knees. Jury walked into the Abyss, and the Abyss welcomed her whole.

What’s a favourite character in ATLA?

I only recently watched Avatar The Last Airbender. I had a really good time. And in the future I’m going to remember that I had a good time when I look back on this character ranking list

Likability of protagonist: Aang is sweet-tempered, strong-willed, and a talented, capable fighter who doesn’t need to rely on violence. 9/10 

First character that you found cool: Kyoshi. And when she manifested specifically to own up to killing that tyrant and almost ruined everything for Aang? Power move

Next character that you found cool: Piandao. What a noble and sophisticated man. He was the character that most resembled the martial arts master archetype in Chinese productions of ancient, action-adventure  genres to me

First character that you found hot: Haru, also because he had a nice voice and was sincere 

Character that became hot: Sokka especially in his fire nation clothes, and when he let his shaved parts grow out for his fire nation disguise 

Character that went from hot to not: Haru after he developed facial hair

Characters with wasted potential: Jet. They just let him die. June, why give her such an intriguing yet unexplored character design? Lu Ten, it would have been nice to have gotten to know him. I feel like his career as a Fire Nation war general would have given us a perspective on Iroh’s flaws

Scariest character: Wan Shi Tong the Owl in the spirit library 

Dumbest character (adorable): this part of Zuko really came out when he turned good and set out to bond with Team Avatar 

Dumbest character act: Zuko and Sokka breaking into the top-security prison for a tiny shot at possibly saving Sokka’s dad?? 

Bravest character act: Mai when she betrayed Azula to save Zuko and told her to fuck off 

Saddest character act: Azula asking Zuko if he was angsting because of/angry at her or “Dad” on the beach

Character with saddest fate: Lu Ten, because we only knew him as a perfect son from the memories of good characters like Iroh and Zuko. Also Jet, whose fate struck me as most realistic 

Luckiest character: Sokka, his survival rate is pretty high considering how dangerously he lives his life 

Characters with sexiest voices: Jet and June 

Best fighters in Team Avatar ranked: Toph is always one step ahead of everything, Katara because of her agressive techniques, Aang ties in the same place as her for being most agile and creative 

Best fighter in the Order of the White Lotus: Iroh the fire-breather

Best fighter in the Fire Nation: Is it Azula because of the ease in which she does high level bending at her young age? 

Fiercest fighters: Katara and Zuko

Worst fighters: not in this one. The sequel show, on the other hand- [tbc]

Most skilled physical fighters ranked: Zuko’s Blue Oni, ninjas Ty Lee and Mai, and Jet with his odd hooked swords

Overpowered character: Katara. First she’s the last waterbender in the Southern Tribe. Then she develops healing. Then she becomes the strongest waterbender in the Northen Tribe. Then she becomes forced to and easily picked up bloodbending??

Character that you would befriend IRL: Mai lol

Character that you would be bffs IRL with: Katara. She has an incredibly open mind and a passion for learning 

Character that you dislike but would actually get along with: Ozai. “Get along with” might not be the right phrase, but his strong opinions and obviously well-learned mind makes me feel like wanting to impress him

Character that you like but would definitely not get along with: Azula I think our personalities would clash 

Character that you would date: Sokka and Aang

Character that you would dump: Sokka

Character that you would not dump: Katara and not just because she would be a terrifying ex, but because she’s too loyal, compassionate, and decent of a person to betray

Character that you would Netflix and chill with: nil this is a children’s show Jet

Character that you would marry: Sokka, I feel reasonably confident that I can get him to do whatever I want 

Characters that you’ll study under, ranked: Iroh and Piandao

Character that you would emulate: Aang for his inner peace and generosity, Azula for meticulous foresight

One character that you think you’re like: Suki because I too would date Sokka

Parts of character(s) that you're made up of: Sokka for optimism and perception, Toph for sarcasm and stubbornness; both of them for adaptability; Suki for reliability and good humor; and Azula for confidence, judgmental, and wanting to earn recognition

Same characters with parts that you lack: Sokka’s sense of humor, Toph always knowing what she’s doing 100% of the time; Sokka and Azula’s interest in governing/running state affairs, Suki’s infallible competency

Judging the character you are like based on real-life relationships: I’m the Azula to a Ty Lee best friend 

What kind of character would you like to be in this universe?: I like to think I have the calm, grounded disposition to be a lightning-bender 

What kind of character would you realistically be in this universe: one of the bourgeoisie living in Ba Sing Se

Canon romantic pairings ranked: Katara/Aang, especially when she pulled him out of the Avatar state when he was angry at the Sand-benders; Zuko/Mai, especially when she revealed that she would betray Azula for him 

Non-canon romantic potential pairings: Straight answer - Actually I wondered if Zuko and Jet would get a redemption arc together, since they seemed to hit things off kinda well and have commonalities. Not so straight answer - I didn’t want to think about this but I did... Zuko/Sokka. Now I’ve disappointed myself.

Pairings with romantic potential that didn’t happen, ranked: Katara and Jet, though it did feel like he was always meant to be beyond redemption from the start. Zuko and the Earth nation girl Song who invited him in for food and tried to bond with him over their scars; thought that he would come back for her after he settled as Fire Lord. Zuko and the Ba Sing Se girl Jin that he entertained so sweetly on their date

Pairing with zero chemistry: until her dramatic betrayal, I thought Mai wasn’t serious about him, and thought that Zuko had better chemistry with the other two Earth nation girls. Sokka and Yue also seemed a little too fast-paced to be  believable

Best friendship: Toph and Aang, their respective idiosyncrasies really balance the other

Best bros ranked: Zuko and Sokka were hilarious! Their biggest common ground is probably feelings of inferiority towards their younger sisters. Zuko and Aang, would have been nice to see more of them after Zuko joined the good side. Bumi and Aang - true friendships really do last that long. And Aang’s disappearance had such a visibly profound impact on Bumi 

And now for some excessive opinion:

Is Aang’s Team Avatar overpowered? The main four: Aang himself is a superior Avatar who learns the three other elements in very short time; Sokka is both tactician and naturally gifted at science/physics despite not being immersed in that sort of environment for much time; Katara is a prodigious waterbender that can do all of its sub-bendings; Toph is also prodigious, is the literal strongest Earthbender in the world, and discovered metalbending. Maybe being in such close proximity to the Avatar boosted their potentials/base stat levels

I felt like they were overpowered and was sometimes annoyed by it, but it annoyed me even more when Korra’s Team Avatar weren’t and seemed severely underpowered. Why am I so hard to please? 

Cursed observation: Is Zuko/Sokka VLD’s Keith/Lance? Is Katara/Zuko VLD’s Allura/Lotor?
