Dafne Keen and Hugh Jackman in Logan (James Mangold, 2017)
Cast: Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Dafne Keen, Boyd Holbrook, Stephen Merchant, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Richard E. Grant, Eriq La Salle, Elise Neal, Quincy Fouse. Screenplay: James Mangold, Scott Frank, Michael Green. Cinematography: John Mathieson. Production design: François Audouy. Film editing: Michael McCusker, Dirk Westervelt. Music: Marco Beltrami.
James Mangold knows something that James Cameron figured out on the first two Terminator movies and George Miller on the Mad Max series: that if you're putting together a big action movie with superheroes and sci-fi concepts, it's best that you keep the human scale in mind. That's the secret of Logan's success -- and to my mind the undoing of most of the blockbuster comic book movies, even those in the Marvel X-Menseries of which Logan is a part. Hugh Jackman's Logan/Wolverine character is a known quantity, and his performances have stood out through most of the films in which he appears. But Logan has never been a particularly human-scale figure: His adamantium superstructure makes him virtually invincible. But he has a troubled past, and in the beginning of Logan he's also physically ill, making him snarlier but also more humanly vulnerable than ever. Holed up in Mexico with the last of the X-Men, Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) and Caliban (Stephen Merchant), he's just trying to get by, procuring medicine for the nonagenarian Xavier, who has occasional seizures that, because of his telekinetic powers, endanger everyone around him. All of this is the usual fantastic stuff of the Marvel movies, but the humanizing of Logan takes place when he's faced with saving a young mutant named Laura (Dafne Keen), who has been created in a laboratory using some of Logan's own DNA. And so the story of the declining Logan, the dying Xavier, and the imperiled Laura develops a human emotional content that actually becomes quite touching -- especially as Logan is not at first inclined to acknowledge Laura as essentially his own daughter. Plot complications ensue because of the attempts of the biotech company that created Laura and a handful of other synthetic mutants, who have escaped captivity, to reclaim them by any means necessary. The slam-bang action stuff is well-done but the whole thing would be just routine without the fine performances of Jackman and Stewart, and especially young Keen, whose fiercely determined Laura reminded me of Millie Bobby Brown's work as Eleven on the series Stranger Things. This is evidently a great time for very young actresses.

GOING TO NEW DEPTHS WITH HARRY STYLES - A Case study of ‘Falling’ by Audouy.com
Intro
The concept was to shoot Harry performing at a grand piano in an elegant but decaying Parisian interior. The piano would gradually fill with water that ultimately overflows into the ornate room, gradually filling the space completely with water until Harry and his piano are completely submerged.
An efficient 15’ x 16’ set was built using water-safe materials by Vision Scenery and then fastened to rock-and-roll truss. The entire volume was lowered on camera by a 180-ton crane, which simulated the effect of the rising water by fixing the camera to the set while the set descended into a water tank. To make things more complicated, the video would be shot practically, with no stunt performers and over the course of only 12 hours.

Piano Rigging at Full Scale: SPECIAL EFFECTS
Local special effects company Full Scale Effects was charged with the task of rigging the piano. Due to the extremely tight prep schedules common to music videos, there was just enough time to install the plumbing into the piano so that water could be pumped into its body, but no time to test.
The team, headed by SPFX Supervisor Dave Peterson, worked up until an hour past call-time to continue to rig the piano so that it would not only hold water, but also leak properly and at the requested speed. The SPFX team of four completely disassembled the 100-year-old piano, including removing the entire brass soundboard, so that a Visqueen lining could be fastened into the interior.
Tumblr media
There must have been three-dozen nuts and bolts holding the musical instrument together—all just about impossible to get to. After the Visqueen was installed, and the piano reassembled, the unit collected water that then “waterfalled” off the sides and out of the keys as Harry played. The effect was beautiful, and entirely achieved as an in-camera effect.
The 100-Year-Old Piano: SPECIALTY PROP
Tumblr media
Set Decorator Neil Wyzanowski purchased all the dressing including a blue Murano glass chandelier and a Venetian-style mirror, and also printed rennaissance-era paintings. The piano turned out to have been once owned by Hollywood Golden-age actress and singer Deanna Durbin, who passed away in 2013 at age 91.
In order to create a character for the piano that echoed Harry’s own personality, inspiration was found in Harry’s own tattoos.
Fun, vintage engravings were sourced that were inspired by pirate tattoos: a whale, a harp, a clipper ship, a rose, and even a rooster.
Tumblr media
These, along with classical ornament, were hand-painted onto the piano and bench in metallic gold paint by local artist Jayne Morgan, and then sealed with a heavy clear coat. After hours of being submurged underwater, the piano started to deteriate beautifully on camera, with black keys falling away like broken teeth, and the white film covering the white keys peeling up like dead skin.

The “Falls Lake” Tank: LOCATION
The music video was shot at the massive “Falls Lake” tank at Universal Studios, as it was the only water tank in Los Angeles with adequate specifications. The center “pit” of the tank was filled with 500,000 gallons of water, which was filtered to be optically clear and also heated (to keep Harry comfortable during our winter night shoot).
A team of safety divers not only ensured Harry’s safety, but also helped reset the set dressing between takes.

“My Universe” music video: a general concept
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Directed by Dave Meyers with the production design by François Audouy and his team, “My Universe” music video creates a science fiction story “set in a time of isolation, where music serves as a unifying factor.” [x]
The video tells about three rebellious bands Coldplay, BTS, and a fictitious band called Supernova 7, made up of six aliens and a robot drummer; all of them are on different planets connected by DJ Lafrique (an interesting titbit noticed by @mrbrightsaad: “L’Afrique” from French means Africa; might be that DJ also belongs to Alien Radio) who uses “Holoband” hologram technology for transmitting their music throughout the galaxy .
Tumblr media
“The idea was to make a piece about unity in a time of isolation. Each group on separate planets in the Spheres seek out an illegal way to communicate and jam with the help of a renowned renegade in the stars.” - Dave Meyers commentary on the video [x]
DJ Lafrique, played by Joe Diao, runs “an illegal radio station from her steam-punk radio station whose walls are covered with thousands of layered stickers and alien band posters, inspired by the interior of 1979s New York club CBGB.” [x]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Alien Radio ship itself was inspired by a Love Button Chris gave to  François Audouy during the  kickoff meeting, thus we can see a heart-shaped window and LoVe on the side!
Tumblr media
Its interior included 650 lit buttons, 300 feet of flex neon tube and a dozen practical video displays; this set took three weeks of non-stop work by Joan Sabater and Por Fun Decorados!
Lots of materials used were recycled, for example, “DJ L’Afrique’s “captain’s chair” started out as a vintage barber chair, upholstered in purple leopard fabric and peppered with recycled hardware and discarded electronics.” [x]
If going back to the plot, the planets are hunted by the Silencers who first appeared in Mylo Xyloto comics book as an army created by Major Minus whose goal is to take sound and colour off the streets [read the full collection of the comics here]
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Silencers’ ship, 3D designed by OnePixel Brush, draws the inspiration from the virus’ shape
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“With COVID-19 dominating the news for months, I may have been subconsciously inspired by the shape of the Novel Coronavirus when designing the enemy ship.” -  François Audouy [x]
The place DJ escaped the Silencers to was Coloratura, as noted by @C_ian_y! It’s written on her screen in Mirror Text language (on the left side) before the Hyperdrive

🎹Fri 20 Nov ‘20🐁
Liam went live today, to promote the LP Act 3 watchback (which is tomorrow!), as well as talk about...well, anything but himself, because he “talks about himself every day” and aren't we bored with it cause he is! He let us know that he and Tom Felton will be doing a duet of Little Things tomorrow during the watchback, so SOMEONE better put it on here so I can see it and SOB. He did an impression of Roman Kemp doing an impression of Harry Styles (though he didn’t know what Harry was doing tonight): “ummmm, hi, guys,” he said, in a nasally voice and deep register. “It’s not perfect,” he admits, “but I did manage to fool someone the other day!”. Liam also tried other character voices, including Tom Felton, Voldemort, and Mickey Mouse, but he couldn’t do Louis (“I can’t do his voice without listening for a long time”) or Niall (“he doesn’t like my impression of him), but he did sing a bit of “This Town”, as it’s his favorite Niall song! Liam talked some more about his art, and how people get better at it - draw some artistic theory study drawings (“like a glass of water”) and things that you’re comfortable with (“I’m quite comfortable with rats at the moment” can’t wait to see his rendition of Simon Cowell).  His sister Ruth tried to get on the live with him, but to no avail :(, as they had some connection issues (“I didn’t cut my sister off,” he said indignantly. “U did”, Ruth replied in the chat). He also reassured us that he won’t ever stop talking about One Direction (“I’ll be talking about it ‘til the day I roll over”) because it was the best time of his life. It was so good, in fact, that just the other day he went back and rewatched ALL of the One Direction adverts ever made (“because Maya hadn’t seen them all” mhmm sure, keep telling yourself that!). Liam also tweeted about World Children’s Day, posted more pictures of him in his Hugo capsule, and did another zoom call with fans!
Niall's behind the scenes video from the RAH is out and it's actually an Ashe behind the scenes video and it’s...odd. I mean she's great, but the video is a sequence of discombobulated shots leading up to the day of the Royal Albert Hall show. Favorite parts include: the disconnected captions throughout the video (including the random “Gucci” floating around), Niall and Ashe awkwardly flirting (“you’ve been working out,” she says. “Yeah! Is it good for you?,” Niall laughs) and some studio practice content. We also got some behind the scenes content from Harry’s team: an article about how they shot ‘Falling’! Francois Audouy - a design magazine - walked through the tech of building the set. We got behind the scenes pics- scuba divers on set!- some fun trivia about the piano- it was 100 years old and belonged to starlet Deanna Durbin who died in 2013 at age 91, talk about the Harry's-tattoo inspired paintings they added to it, and we learned that the piano, unfortunately, died that day, as a result of being submerged in water- “the black keys falling (haha) away like broken teeth”. The video itself was shot in heated water with divers on hand to assure everyone’s safety. Harry has also been named one of Brandwatch’s most influential people on twitter, which is quite a feat, considering he’s never ON twitter!

Designing the music video for Harry Styles’ “Falling” was a unique opportunity to collaborate with visionary music video director Dave Meyers on an elegant single-set concept that eschewed the visual barrage of many modern-day music videos.
The concept was to shoot Harry performing at a grand piano in an elegant but decaying Parisian interior. The piano would gradually fill with water that ultimately overflows into the ornate room, gradually filling the space completely with water until Harry and his piano are completely submerged.
