The Farm Of The Future: Robots Grow Lettuce
Tumblr media
The farm Ox is using robots to grow vegetables in an effort to supply affordable local production. The Associate Editor of MIT Technology Review, Erin Winick (Follow him on Twitter) wrote an insightful article on the topic. Iron Ox is a company that has reportedly opened a production facility in San Carlos, near San Francisco to produce leafy greens at an impressing rate. MIT Technology Review writes that they will be producing about 26,000 heads a year that is the production level of an outdoor farm that could be five times bigger. But how do they manage it? The farm is autonomous, which means that robots are growing the lettuce and not human agriculture workers. The company is reportedly not selling any of the greens it produces for the time being as it is still trying to strike a deal with several local restaurant and groceries. You might ask where are the tens of thousands of heads of lettuce going. They are given either to a local food bank or to the company salad bar. It must be a healthy company, right? Apart from the employees who are forced to eat lettuce, the company`s staff consists of robots that pluck the plants from the tray and transfer them to new trays to allow them to grow. There are also robots that move the trays around the farm's facility. The software that is responsible for leading the project is called “The Brain”. The tool monitors nitrogen levels, temperature and the location of the robots, managing humans and robots alike. While an automated farm might seem like a cool science-fiction project, some critics may argue it's too costly and bringing no major benefits. The company's co-founder Brandon Alexander answers them by citing two problems: the shortage of agricultural workers and the distances that fresh produce has to travel before reaching the stores. Alexander thinks that robots can make it possible to grow food close to urban areas eliminating the need to import the production from distant corners of the world. This would be a win-win situation as the consumers will receive fresher vegetables and fruits at the same price. Yet, it`s still only a vision as the initial investment associated with such farms is still big. Let`s wait and see whether this issue will be solved soon. And what would be the advantages and disadvantages of fully automated farms. What do you think? Share your comments below. Read the full article

The two friends took a road trip through California, asking farmers about the biggest pain points in their industry. The vast majority had the same answer: Newer generations simply aren't interested in farming, creating a massive labor shortage.
That's where Angus comes in. While the typical farmer has to check crops multiple times a day, making sure they have the proper amounts of water, nutrients, and nitrogen, Angus speeds up the process by transferring crops from the harvesting area to the production center.
"A lot of the technology we essentially had to develop from scratch, but now we have a real robot working on real plants that are thriving in our environment,"
