John Abraham cant act. That has been proved film after film. But he is a smart guy. Throw him in a realistic film with a great ensemble cast and then watch him perform. He makes you believe. Believe that he CAN. Parmanu- The Story of Pokhran does exactly that. Just like Madras Cafe, this is a film based on true events and is an edge of the seat thriller. It is a film which has noble intentions and almost succeeds in becoming a good film. It brings to screen the Pokhran chapter and how India pulled off an incredible event right under America's nose. It is a kind of film where a satellite is a villain and everyone is fighting to stay off the radar. Great plot and great performances aside, the film does bring about goosebumps from time to time which any thriller should. It could have been a much better film but who cares when you exit the theatre feeling proud about being an Indian. This is a brave film to make. It is devoid of the regular Bollywood razzmatazz but if this film works, then it would be a shot in the arm for Bollywood. Watch Parmanu. It is a chapter worth reliving! P.S- It is nice to see @anujasathe9 in a meaty role. She pulls off her part as John's wife with aplomb. And it is so nice to see @dianapenty as part of the core testing team wherein her sex is not questioned. Diana is stellar in her part. There was a time when Shahid Kapoor often did mediocre films. And then the Metamorphosis happened. He started choosing better films without bothering about their box office fate. Some films tanked but the actor in him triumphed most often than not. He must have felt similarly when he said ok to Batti Gul Meter Chalu. A director fresh off the success of Toilet and a topic that was waiting to be told. But not all great ideas make for riveting films. Batti Gul is a bore that drags on and on without much to say. The love triangle, the humungous bill and the quest for justice makes the first half look like a completely different film. And the second half is seeped completely in the Toilet mode where justice is all about starting a movement. It can work once for the novelty factor, but not again and again. To be honest, Shahid Kapoor has matured into an incredible actor. Give him any role and he will give you a performance worth rooting for. That an actor of his calibre is reduced to such buffoonery is rather sad to watch. Divyendu Sharma who seems to have aced the second fiddle role in the movies is also good. Shraddha Kapoor is her usual chirpy self but doesnt have much to do here unlike Stree. And Yami Gautam returns to the screen in a role that doesnt demand any histrionics. Director Shree Narayan Singh, bouyed by the success of Toilet decided to take the electricity mafia head on but falls flat. The film would have made much more sense if the electricity theft aspect had been focussed upon. But naah, Batti Gul remains a film that could have been so much more, if only it was written well. And the Garhwali accent is such a putoff. I mean adding Thehra and Bal after every line in the name of authenticity grates on your nerves after a point and endless shots of Ganga do well for UK tourism. Skip Batti Gul and spend your weekend watching Manto instead. That film atleast has the conviction to stay true to its subject. . .
