A Case for … Not Working from Home! Yawn … Yawwn … YAWWNNNN 😴😴😴 It’s almost two months for our lockdown in #Pakistan and working from home. The first month went well, working from home I mean. Started waking up at 7am, instead of 6 You find the time to exercise more                               Lounge in your shorts and socks                                              No shirt, just your vest (in my case, #Sadrah)                                                             Come 5pm, put on your shirt and shoes (stay in your socks) and sit in the garden                       … It’s fine as long as you keep working, keep at it, stay busy! But now, now, now …. YAWNNNNNN ….                (forgot what I was thinking!) Oh yes, I’VE TURNED LAZY! 🤔 Today, as I write these words, I realize that working from home is NOT AN OPTION.  There is no such successful concept as “an office at home”.  The novelty wears away.  So does one’s creativity.  #Office interaction.  Office dynamics. Black Money Love- more than just a movie review One of the effects of the COVID lockdown was an increase of movies my family was watching, primarily being #blackmoneylove, a #Turkish #soapopera. Besides the ‘eye-popping’ beauties (which I won’t go into in this paper 😊), the serial is actually very interesting to watch. Its directing and acting is on par with any Hollywood soap; alongwith scenes, production sets and story line; and the actors … 💓💓💓💓 va va voom! Naturally, like many soaps, there were moments of being “over the top” 😊 and crying ☹ (the latter, not my cup o’ tea) … and my!  LOTS OF SMOOCHING 💓! However, besides being an action drama it shows the culture and character of modern Turkey - It is a conservatively run country A moderate society A MODERN society! Western & Eastern cultures exist together Conservative & Liberal outlooks live alongside each other High standards of living Educated & talented youth Turkey is a #Muslim state, with a conservative government, but a progressive & modern outlook. No country is ideal but similar cultures can adapt best practices and standards from each other.  It is not an overnight change- it is a generational one …but it can happen. They had this fantastic cook, Mr Bhajiwala Their mild and meek manager, Mr Jeejeebhoy (Jee - jee bhai)  nodded his head and agreed with everything everybody said. My grandfather was the Sheriff of Bombay. Being Sheriff, it was only natural that he had Mr Bandookwala and Mr Golimar as his constant companions. My grandfather had many Parsi friends, who were in politics. There was this squeaky clean khadi-clad Mr Ghandy, and the not so clean Mr Gandabhoy — who was invariably being hounded by Mr Kotwal. But he never left home without his friends Mr Barrister, Mr Vakil, Mr Lawyer and their Munshi, Mr Mehnty. My grandfather built Hotel Waldorf on Arthur Bunder Road in Colaba. So for this, he naturally used the services of Mr Contractor and Mr Mistry. Yet... he never went to the conservative moneylenders when he was short of money, but borrowed it from his Parsi friend, Mr Readymoney. Our neighbour and family physician was Dr Adi Doctor. He lived with his in-laws, Mr and Mrs Pochkhanawala. My sister swears they ate only poached eggs for breakfast. I remember going to Dr Adi Doctor’s sister’s wedding. Blog- THE GOLDEN SPOON! About 50 people have over 26 years of service with our family just at Beach Luxury Hotel (not counting our other hotels) – NINE of whom have been with us for over 40 years! Why would someone choose to work for 50% of his or her LIFE with one family !?   Our family’s CORE philosophy stems from my grandfather’s, late Dinshaw B Avari, life & upbringing.  Born in 1902, studied in the Petit Orphanage in Bombay, gave tuitions to support his & his siblings educations, my grandfather was truly a self-made man. He always taught my parents & us – “Your father was born with a Silver spoon in his mouth; and you’ll are born with a ‘golden’ spoon!  Never forget your roots – never forget what it took to give you your current lifestyle & education”.  That has always been front & center of our upbringing and in our children’s upbringing- respect, tolerance, loyalty, trust, compassion (to name a few) are the cornerstone of our relationships with people.  We have learnt that the very Foundations of our Group are our people.
