This is a highly debated topic since Lalita Sahasranama has attained cult status these days and of course there is YouTube, there are CDs, several FB groups, Mahila Mandalis and several rascal and fraud gurus, Mathadhipatis, even regular temple priests who are Ayogya (unfit) and Anaadhikaari (who don't have the authority) and yet they are sitting on the Vyaasa Peethas and telling people to go ahead and chant Lalita Sahasranama.

These so-called gurus don't like to speak the truth because that means they will have to risk losing followers who will give them money. So they always try to please everyone and be politically correct.

Not only that, there are many haraamkhors/ charlatans on FB who have portrayed themselves as "Lalita Upasakas" or "Shakta Vidya Experts" who are directing people to chant Lalita Sahasranama without Guru upadesha. These scoundrels are taking even genuine seekers down to Hell along with them with their uninformed "advice" which has no scriptural basis whatsoever.

So we want to clear the confusion once and for all for the benefit of everybody. Gurudev always tells us that when we find something that is not in line with the shastras, we must definitely point it out and state our objection once. Even after that, if people want to continue and do their own thing, then it's their fate.

So should Lalita Sahasranama be chanted without taking diksha/initiation? OUR ANSWER IS NOT GOING TO PLEASE MANY OF YOU.

But that doesn't really matter to us. Our job is to state the facts and the truth. The rest is your destiny. We are going to address as many points as we can in this post.

1. If anyone tells you "Having Devotion to Maa is sufficient, no need to take initiation to chant Lalita Sahasranama" understand that such a person is ignorant and PLEASE RUN AWAY from them.

These people are not informed of the shastras and they have no authority to tell others to do things that are not in line with the scriptural injunctions.

There is no Shastra or Tantra in which Devi or Shiva have said please don't take initiation, just pickup the mantra/stotra from anywhere and start doing it on your own. If there is no scriptural sanction, then one can't act smart and do whatever one likes.

Unless there is an explicit reference in the Shastras you cannot take things for granted.

In every Tantrik grantha, Guru Mahatva and importance of diksha is compulsorily mentioned. Adhyatma is fully under the control and jurisdiction of Guru. Even God has attested to this Himself. Diksha is the FIRST STEP towards any spiritual progress. Everything else comes after that.

Lord Shiva CLEARLY states in the Kularnava Tantra:

AdikshitA ye kurvanti japa pujAdikAh kriyAha |

Na phalanti priye teshAm shilAyAmupta vijavat ||

Whatever a person, who is not initiated, does, whether it is PujA (worship) or Japa (chanting) or any other religious acts, proves abortive just like seeds sown on stones.

There are many so-called Gurus who give permission to their followers/devotees/disciples to chant whatever they want. They may say "No initiation is required" In fact, by saying so they become partners in sharing the sin. Who can give permission for acting against Shastras?

Do not attempt to make mistakes and then blame God for your troubles.

For all those people who think they can blindly just pick up sadhanas/mantras and start chanting Stotras from a book or by watching youtube videos or reading fb posts:-

पुस्तके लिखितं दृष्ट्वा स्वयं ज्ञात्वा करोति यः।

ब्रह्महत्यासुरापानस्वर्णस्तेयादिपातकै:।

लिप्यते नात्र संदेहो नरके निवसत्यसौ॥

(दक्षिणामूर्ति संहिता)

पुस्तक में लिखित या स्वयं ही अर्थ लगाकर जो शास्त्रोक्त अनुष्ठान को करता है, वह ब्रह्महत्या, मदिरापान, स्वर्णचोरी आदि महापापों से लिप्त होता है, इसमें संदेह नहीं है। साथ ही, उसे नरकगामी भी होना पड़ता है।

pustake likhitaṁ dr̥ṣṭvā svayaṁ jñātvā karoti yaḥ।

brahmahatyā-surāpāna-svarṇasteyādi-pātakai:।

lipyate nātra saṁdeho narake nivasatyasau॥

(dakṣiṇāmūrti saṁhitā)

Dakshinamurti Samhita says, one who performs shastrokta anushatanas by taking them from the writings in books and interprets them his/her own way incurs the sin of Brahma Hatya, alcoholism, stealing gold, etc. Also, he/she goes to hell (lower realms) after death.

So don't try to drive without a license. Please get one instead.

2. Sri Vidya is a part of the Tantras . Lalita Tripurasundari is therefore invariably associated with Tantra. She cannot be separated from Sri Vidya. Now 𝗔𝗟𝗟 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗸 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗸𝘁𝗮 𝘃𝗶𝗱𝘆𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗚𝘂𝗿𝘂 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗮, 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗮 𝗚𝘂𝗿𝘂 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝘃𝗶𝗮 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘂𝗺 𝗼𝗳 𝗗𝗶𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗮.

It is Guru alone who controls Shakti, not the other way round. So this means even Sri Vidya requires initiation and by that, it extends to Lalita Sahasranama, Trishati and Khadgamala as well.

People tend to get irked when they read this because it makes them feel that Lalita Sahasranama is the exclusive property of initiates only. This kind of thinking is incorrect. Otherwise She wouldn't have compassionately directed her devotees to meet or come in contact with the right Gurus who would initiate them into Her worship. Please understand this.

3. 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐂𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐑 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐗𝐏𝐋𝐈𝐂𝐈𝐓 𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐫𝐮𝐭𝐢 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐒𝐚𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐚 𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐫𝐢 𝐕𝐢𝐝𝐲𝐚, 𝐢𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐘𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐢 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐚𝐩𝐚 (𝐂𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐘𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐬) – 𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫. Even Bhaskararaya has attested to this fact in his works. Yoginis control the various energy centres in the body, so Yogini Shaapa surely leads to energy disturbances in the body which manifest as physical, emotional and psychological disorders. We have seen this first hand, so we can say this with conviction.

4. There is a difference between Stotras and Mala Mantras. Stotras are usually verses in praise of a particular deity but some stotras are called 'Mala Mantras' which definitely require Guru Upadesha/Diksha. 𝐋𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐚 𝐒𝐚𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐚 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐌𝐚𝐥𝐚 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐚 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐆𝐮𝐫𝐮 𝐔𝐩𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐡𝐚.

In fact, ANY stotra that has a Rishi and Nyasa and usually starts with "Asya Sri......mantrasya....so and so Rishi" means it has to be taught by a Guru only.

5. For those who go by the "Devotion is the only thing that matters" argument: If devotion is the factor, then where does the question of breaking the rules come from?

A true devotee will never go against the will of his Lord. In this case, it is Lalita, who has clearly instructed that Her sahasranama has to be secretly maintained and must be given only as Upadesha from a Guru. So how can you act against Her instruction if you call yourself her true devotee?

If you took the diksha/upadesha from a proper Guru and THEN chanted her sahasranama, then definitely She becomes 'Naama-Paaraayana-Prita', not otherwise.

6. 𝗗𝗶𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗮 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝗿𝗶 𝗩𝗶𝗱𝘆𝗮 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘂𝗹𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗟𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗮 𝗦𝗮𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗮. The seeker must be initiated into Panchadashi by an Authorised Guru, belonging to a GENUINE Sampradaya, and when the timing is right, and if Devi feels that the seeker is qualified to chant her thousand holy names, then Devi Herself will speak through the mouth of the Guru, as She is the Guru Mandala Rupini, meaning Lalita is the Guru and Guru is Lalita. So Guru will then instruct the seeker and give Upadesha of the Lalita Sahasranama, and teach the secret procedures and nyasa prakriyas to the sadhaka. But this must occur as a natural progression in one's Sadhana. It is not just given out like that.

Lalita Sahasranama comes under the Panchanga Upasana of Lalita which includes–

Lalita Sahasranama - which represents the head of the deity

Tripur Sundari Triloka Mangal Kavach - which represents the body of the deity

Lalita Hridaya- which is the heart of the deity

Lalita Stavan - which is the Achara of the deity

Devi Gita- which is the tatva /vichara of the deity

So Sahasra Namarchana should be performed after finishing the regular mantra japa.

7. EVEN BEFORE being given Panchadashi, one is required to go though the diksha krama of Sri Vidya which includes atmabeej mantra, guru paduka, mahaganapati OR ucchishta ganapati depending on which Achara you are being initiated into, ajapa/hamsa vidya and Bala. No genuine Sri Vidya Guru will simply give out Panchadashi just like that.

The problem with people is that they want to approach the CEO (Lalita) who is sitting on the top floor of the Sri Meru, without climbing up the levels from below. How can you reach the top floor without going through the ground floor, first floor and so on? And this hierarchy is made by Devi Herself. She has willed it this way, and therefore it is so. We can't just twist and turn things according to our convenience and do whatever we like and call ourselves her 'devotees'.

The tantras say “राज्यम देहि शिरो देहि न देयम् षोडशाक्षरी” (raajyam dehi shiro dehi, na deyam shodashaakshari)” – give away your kingdom, let your head be cut and be given in charity, but DO NOT GIVE the shodashakshari)

Therefore No Guru will ever give Sri Vidya mantra to somebody until he is instructed to do so by the Mother.

8. If anyone says "Don’t waste time to find a guru. She will teach everything you need." again, please run away from them.

This is a statement based in ignorance, and no real sadhaka of Lalita will ever make such statements.

If She was going to teach everything one needed, then why did She send Totapuri and Bhairavi Brahmani to Ramakrishna Paramahamsa to teach him the nuances of her worship? Even Ramakrishna was crying O Mother O mother all the time, wasn't he?! Why didn't She manifest in her Nirguna Swarupa to him unless and until he took proper initiation from the Guru?! Why didn't he experience Nirvikalpa Samadhi on his own? Why did he need his Guru's intervention?

Please understand , No Devi or Devata will directly come and teach the seeker. If that was the case, Lord Krishna being the Supreme Paramatma wouldn't have to go and take diksha from Sandipani Rishi, and Lord Rama didn't have to go and take initiation from Vashishta. All the divine beings give their Grace and blessings through the Guru only.

9. Lalita Sahasranama DEFINITELY REQUIRES INITIATION. Just because it has been pretty popular for many years in several Smarta families, and now it has gained a cult status among people, doesn't mean the rules have been changed. They are still the same.

There are people who say 'Oh my grandmother or someone else in my family used to chant Lalita Sahasranama daily for 20/30/40/50 years...nothing happened to them, so why can't I also do the same.'

This is the problem with people in Kaliyuga. They think they can do whatever they want, bend the rules however they want, and still they expect the devata to keep on giving them grace.

They are Dharma Virodhi, Neeti Virodhi and Shastra Virodhi yet they expect to be put on a pedestal by the gods. Such is their arrogance.

10. Sri Vidya was taught to Devi after she requested Shiva to teach her. So Shiva was the Guru in the form of Paraprakashanandanatha and Devi became the disciple. In this also, She was teaching the world by example, that one needs to surrender to the Guru in order to get the Atma Gyana.

So why are people thinking they are above Devi ?

11. For those who say 'Oh I have been chanting for so many years without initiation, nothing happened to me, I had many experiences' etc etc:

So there are couple of things here. With upasana of any Devi or Devata, there is always a honeymoon period, where everything's going well, you're having special dreams or you're seeing signs etc.

Here, your Sankalpa Shakti works in the subconscious to get you to feel these experiences. But this is NOT a permanent state, and neither is it indicative of any real spiritual progress.

Secondly, when one's Dasha Bhukti/planetary periods are going well, or when they are undergoing periods of Rahu/ketu/8th lord then they tend to have such pseudo experiences which makes them feel like this is the real deal, and that they need to continue to do this over and over again.

But everybody's life is going to have testing times. This is the time when your karmic enjoyments are getting over and your karmic baggage is going to be unloaded heavily upon you and you will have to face severe tests and paybacks. This is when you will feel the effects of not having the Guru by your side to pass the tests of Maya.

Devi is Prakriti and Prakriti's tests are very severe (hinsaatmak)

This is why it is said over and over again, that without Guru, no one can cross the Ocean of Maya and Samsara.

12. Some ignorant people have MISINTERPRETED the Nama 'Guru Mandala Rupini' to mean that She is your Guru and She will teach you everything, therefore you don't have to go in search of any Guru. This is utter nonsense.

If that was the case then why did all the Gurus of Sri Vidya get initiated? Were they fools? Why did Agastya have to take initiation from Hayagriva to chant Lalita Sahasranama? Why didn't he also say Oh, Devi is Guru mandala rupini, she is my teacher and I can just pick it up from anywhere and start chanting on my own?!

The Nama 'Guru Mandala Rupini' means the nirguna swarupa of the Guru Mandala or Sampradaya into which you have been initiated into, IS the swarupa of Sri Lalita. She is the form of your Guru Mandala. It means worshipping the Gurus is worshipping Lalita and worshipping Lalita is worshipping the Gurus.

Guru is Ishta i.e. Lalita, and Ishta is Guru. This is the meaning. And Guru, Mantra and Ishta are One.

13. 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐤𝐭𝐢 𝐢𝐬 𝐆𝐮𝐫𝐮 𝐀𝐝𝐡𝐞𝐞𝐧𝐚, 𝐆𝐮𝐫𝐮 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐤𝐭𝐢 𝐀𝐝𝐡𝐞𝐞𝐧𝐚 No sadhana or upasana in this universe will fructify without Guru Anugraha. Guru alone has the power to control Shakti. Therefore, Shakti is also Guru adheena, and this includes Lalita as well. Since the Guru is the supreme authority mentioned in the shastras, all the Devis and Devatas follow the command of the Guru alone, and will confer their blessings on the upasaka only if they have followed their Guru's instructions properly. If Guru is displeased, no Devi will confer Her blessings on the sadhaka. This is the rule. Maano ya na maano.

14. 𝐎𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐞, 𝐋𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐚 𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐭𝐢 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐊𝐡𝐚𝐝𝐠𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐚 𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐒𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐋𝐃 𝐍𝐎𝐓 𝐛𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.

When Agastya approached Hayagriva to teach him the Lalita Trishati, Hayagriva did not give it to him initially. He hesitated.

Lalita directed Hayagriva to reveal the Trishati to Agastya only after Agastya's devotion to his Guru Hayagriva was tested for three years. Devi tested him to see if he had truly surrendered to his Guru before revealing the Trishati to him. Lalita Trishati is a powerful Mala Mantra and only people having Srividya Upadesha can chant it. This is not for common folks.

Khadgamala comes from the Vamakeshvara Tantra and anything that comes from a tantrik text by default requires diksha. Khadgamala is first of all not meant for the layman. Khadgamala is the simplified version of Navavarna worship and is given to only very advanced upasakas, who have PRACTISED Navavarana Puja for several years. You cannot just pick it up from a book and start chanting at whim. A person cannot be taught PhD level knowledge without first understanding the basics.

15. When one does sadhana or upasana without upadesha from Guru,it will not yield any fruits. And even if it does temporarily, it becomes a debt or Rina and turns into a Dosha (affliction) upon the upasaka for which they will have to take several rebirths to pay off.

𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗮 𝘀𝗮𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗮 𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗶.𝗲. 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗱𝗵𝗶𝗸𝗮𝗿𝗮 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝘁, 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝘀𝗮𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗮 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗣𝗨𝗟𝗦𝗢𝗥𝗜𝗟𝗬 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗯𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗶, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝘂𝗿𝘂 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘁𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗥𝗶𝗻𝗮 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗿𝘁𝗵𝘀.

16. There are some who argue that rules can change according to desh,kaal, achar. This view is incorrect.

Desh, Kaal and Achar change with reference to geography and time. For example, say solar eclipse is occurring on some date. So whether the grahan rules must be followed or not in India, and which places it must be followed....these nirnayas change according to Desh, Kaal and Achar.

DHARMA NEVER CHANGES ACCORDING TO DESH, KAAL, ACHAR.

Neeti can change, but not Dharma.

Sadhana, Daiva Upasana, Puja, Homa, Yagya, Mantrochhaara, comes under Dharmik Karmakaanda. So their rules never change according to Desha Kaala and Achara.

𝐀𝐜𝐡𝐀𝐫𝐚 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐨 𝐝𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐚, 𝐝𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐬𝐲𝐚

𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐡𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐲𝐮𝐭𝐚𝐡� � says the phalashruthi of the Vishnu Sahasranama.

Dharma is not what we think it to be, it is what the Lord thinks it to be. In this case, it is Devi Lalita. Unless we follow the Dharma, we cannot call ourselves Sanatani.

All the Gods and Goddesses operate within the purview of Dharma. They have demonstrated this time and time again in all their incarnations so that humans can learn out of it.

So the one who follows the Acharas and Dharma prescribed by Devi is indeed doing the Seva of Devi Herself.

Therefore, Dharmo Rakshati Rakshitah. He who protects Dharma will be protected by Dharma.

17. Finally, Bhakti Marga is very Different from Mantra Marga or Upasana Marga. For being an Upasaka one needs Bhakti but being a Bhakta itself will not qualify you to portray yourself as an Upasaka. In Tantra, rules and procedures are given lot of importance. So this is not the place for monkey tricks. The repercussions will be very severe.

There are numerous other stotras on each and every deity which can be chanted by everyone- you can chant it with all your heart and soul. But if any Stotra comes under those that require initiation, then please get yourself initiated from a competent and authorised Guru. It is always better to drive with a license than without one.
