Billboard: I have to say, you look slim and fabulous!
Celia Cruz: Chica, yes, everyone says I’m thinner. The other day in Mexico, this woman asked, “Doesn’t it worry you to be so thin?” And I said, “Chica, I don’t even notice.” Because I wear wide clothing. If you dress how I used to dress — tight — you notice these things. But I don’t anymore. It could be all the work.
BB: It seems to me like in the past two years, you’ve not only been busier than ever, but that there’s been a Celia revival in the U.S. Do you perceive that?
Cruz: I blame it on the fact that a lot of people from Latin America, who knew me but had never seen me, have now come to the U.S. I can’t even go to a store anymore. I can’t go to church. [Her manager interjects: “The other day, the priest stopped the mass to say hi to Celia. We had to leave.”]
In Nicaragua, the people went inside the church after me. I love to go to church, and I do so in every country I stop in.
BB: It amazes me how strong your voice continues to be.
Cruz: I take very good care of myself. My bad evenings are spent working, and when I finish working, I go to the hotel or to my house. I’m not one to get drunk or have strong drinks, because strong drinks hoarsen your voice.
BB: Do you smoke?
Cruz: I’ve never smoked in my life. I started to smoke, because in my family everyone smoked — my mother, my brother. My brother was teaching me, and I got a cold; I went to the doctor. And Dr. Morales — that was his name — asked me: “Do you smoke?” And I said, “No, doctor.” And he said, “Well, if you want your voice to last, never smoke.” And right there and then, I stopped learning how to do it. I have to take care of my vocal cords so I can give my audience what they expect of me.
BB: How about the recording studio? Are you one to lay down full tracks or record phrase by phrase?
Cruz: It’s so much easier to record now. When I recorded with La Sonora, I’d begin at midnight and I’d still be there at 6 a.m. with no voice left. Now, you can punch in one line. I love that system. But I still want to sing. I give more of myself singing live. Lip-synching is for TV. I will not lip-synch on a stage.
BB: You’ve said you want to record an all-bolero album. Would it be Cuban standards?
Cruz: No. No. I don’t like to sing what others have done. Yes, sometimes I’ll sing something old, if someone requests it. But boleros? They’ll be previously unreleased. If one’s bound to become a hit, I want to be the one to create it. I’ve always been.
BB: Whoopi Goldberg has said she will direct and act in the movie of your life. How did you hook up with her?
Cruz: Emilio and Gloria [Estefan] had this big concert after Andrew came. [She immediately quizzes me.] What’s Andrew?
BB: The hurricane?
Cruz: Ah, good. Wanted to see if you’re on the ball. [laughs] So, [Goldberg] was the mistress of ceremonies, and since she was in Miami, she said, “The only thing I can say in Spanish is ‘Azucar!’ because I admire Celia Cruz and I’d like to do a movie on her life.” And I was in my house watching and I thought, “How nice.”
And two years later, she said it again in California. That’s when I sent her a fax thanking her, even though I didn’t know her. And last year, they gave her an award in Washington and she asked if I could sing. So I went and I sang — what was it? “Químbara.” Yes, all the Americans request “Químbara.” Then we met on stage, and I said, “Finally!” And she said the same thing. And that’s it. I gave her permission to make the movie.
BB: What else do you still need to do, beside your bolero album?
Cruz: Ah, nothing else! That God grant me good health to continue in this. No, I have many things already. and many awards that I’m thankful for from the bottom of my heart. I never thought I would win a Grammy. I never thought I’d have a star — well, here in Miami, yes, because my people are here — but in Hollywood Boulevard! Never in my life!

Our Story-Short Story-Part 4
The reading selected for this wedding ceremony is titled "On Marriage," by
Kahlil Gibran. The words talk about the intense melding of two people in marriage and at the same time, about two people who maintain an intense separateness a separateness that keeps their individuality intact and flourishing. It's a lovely conundrum and perhaps a formula for a successful marriage.
The reader is Candice, Marisol's cousin.
Reader:
You were born together, and together you shall be forevermore.
You shall be together when the white wings of death scatter your days.
Ay, you shall be together even in the silent memory of God.
But let there be spaces in your togetherness,
And let the winds of the heavens dance between you.
Love one another, but make not a bond of love:
Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.
Fill each other's cup but drink not from one cup.
Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf
Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone,
Even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same
music.
Give your hearts, but not into each other's keeping.
For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts.
And stand together yet not too near together:
For the pillars of the temple stand apart,
And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other's shadow.
"On Marriage," Kahlil Gibran
As Candice spoke those words it brought on visons for our future together. Truly inspirational words.
"Beautiful, I couldn't have said it better myself!" exclaimed Mark.
If anyone can show just cause why this couple cannot lawfully be joined together in matrimony, let them speak now or forever hold their peace.
Complete silence. I turned to look at Marisol, knowing that the time was dwindling and it was almost the moment where I would tell her just how much she meant to me.
It is time for the words the Bride and Bride want to hear the most. The words that will take them across the threshold from being engaged to being married.
They asked to prepare their own words so now it's time for the exchange of the vows.
Marisol turned to look at me and I smiled. I mouthed I love you because it was nerve-wrecking. Standing next to me was the woman of my dreams and my damn, I was not going to be afraid to let her know it.
"Honey, I can't promise that we won't fight or come to disagreements. We're humans and that's a fact. I love you and that's a fact. I promise to care, cherish and look after you through good or bad. When you're down and you need some help, I'll be there.
Thank you for loving me even when I was afraid to love you." I was almost tearing up and it had the same effect on Marisol. She held my hand and kissed my cheek. "I was never the brave one in this relationship. You kissed me first and you held my hand even when I let go because I was ashamed.
All of our firsts, it was you who initiated them. I know that deep down, you think I don't love you as much as you love and me and you're scared, but Marisol, I promise that from this day forward, I will grow cojones(balls) the size of Texas for you. Te quiero mucho y para siempre. (I love you a lot and forever)."
It was Marisol's time but I already knew what she would say. She would proclaim her love for me and talk about how much she would cherish me. Boy was I wrong. That woman was sum'n else.
"Katie, Carino, Mi amor, Azucar, I'm not going to lie. It was never easy being with you. Your constant mood swings and cold exterior could push anyone away." I could hear my parents laughing in the audience. Mark even wolf howled. I rolled my eyes and continued to look at Marisol. She blushed.
She so had some explaining to do tonight. "No matter what you say or do, I'll always be there for you. I know that you're loving and kind. You're all I ever wanted and I'm glad I never gave up on us. Thank you for loving me back. I don't know what I'd do if I lost you. Baby, I love yah and I'll never stop. You're my girl, my world and my heart. Nunca (Never) forget that."

Super Bowl 2020: Miami’s ultimate guide for best places to eat, drink, and sightseeing
If you are in Miami, you already noticed the influx of tourists coming in, and all the energy surrounding the city due to the Super Bowl LIV happening this Sunday. After all, it’s been 10 years since the city hosted this enormous event – but before the game starts and Patrick Mahomes, with Kansas City Chiefs, takes Jimmy Garoppolo, and the San Francisco 49ers, there is a lot for you to do. For this reason, we created your Ultimate Miami Guide, because there is much more than just beaches in our Magic City. Ready to dive in?
The Cuban Experience
Nothing else screams more “Miami” than Cuban coffee and croquetas. If this is your first time in the city, you can’t miss the opportunity to try a Colada, the strongest of the Cuban coffees, served in a small plastic shot cup. Here is a guide to all the different types of Cuban coffee.
And to complement the coffee, get yourself some croquetas here:
Islas Canarias (Kendall)
La Carretta (Miami)
Sergio’s Restaurant (Miami)
Publix (local supermarket all over South Florida)
Tumblr media
Calle Ocho
Located in Little Havana, Miami’s vibrant Cuban heart, Calle Ocho is the home to Versailles, a historic venue visited by many celebrities and politicians. There, or in almost any other cafe in the neighboorhood, you can order your Cuban coffee in a walk-up window.
While in the area, don’t forget to visit Ball and Chain for live music and drinks, Azucar for some excellent ice cream/paletas, and watch locals discuss politics over dominoes at Maximo Gomez Park, entitled Domino Park by locals.
Versailles
Ball and chain
Azucar Ice Cream
Union Beer Store, if you’re into a wrestling-themed craft beer market
Domino Park
Wynwood
Wynwood, South Florida’s art hub, will host the Super Bowl Fan Fest at Wynwood Marketplace. However, if you are not into that, we still have a few recommendations before you move to our next selection, after all, you can’t visit Miami without spending at least a day in the neighborhood of colorful murals, tasty food, bars, and lounges.
Wynwood Walls: murals, and nearby galleries with works of emerging artists from all over the world.
Start at Coyo Taco, because yes to tacos any day, any time, and finish at the famous Salty Donut for a well-deserved treat.
Tumblr media
 Art/Museums/Gardens
Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science: you might have seen the massive aquarium oculus lens that’s become Instagram famous, but there is plenty to do in this first world-class science museum.
Perez Art Museum Miami: The PAMM is a contemporary art museum in downtown Miami, close to American Airlines Arena, home of the Miami Heat.
Vizcaya Museum & Gardens: This historic 10-acre landmark is covered with European architecture, marvelous gardens, and fountains overlooking Biscayne Bay.
Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden (South Miami): Enjoy 83 acres of rare tropical plants and garden exhibits.
Beer and cocktails
Because it’s always happy hour somewhere:
Veza Sur (Wynwood): A Latin craft-beer bar with an outdoor patio and live music.
Funky Buddha (Fort Lauderdale): One of the best breweries in Florida, don’t forget to order some yucca tots to go along with your beer.
Broken Shaker at Freehand Miami (Miami Beach): Located in the backyard of a boutique hostel, this cocktail bar is home to some of the most innovative mixologists.
Sugar (Brickell): Want to see stunning views of the Miami skyline? So head straight to the 40th floor of the East hotel.
Food halls
Luckily, we’ve been getting a lot more of those here in South Florida. We named just a few:
1-800-Lucky (Wynwood): A mini-Asian food hall with features that includes a hidden karaoke room and an outdoor area for live music and drinks.
Time Out Market Miami (Miami Beach): Twenty-one different food or drink options at your disposal, let’s leave it like this.
Politan Row Miami (Miami Design District): Previously known as St. Roch Market, this is another gourmet, chef-driven food hall where you can enjoy an eclectic mix of food options varying from Peruvian, and Vietnamese, to Southern Comfort.
Luna Park (Brickell): Formerly known as La Centrale, this Italian food hall located inside Brickell City Centre hosts 14 different eateries, five bars, a cooking school, a wine shop, and a coffee shop over three floors.
Casa Tua Cucina (Brickell): This is the other Italian food hall inside of Brickell City Centre. Ten different stations are ranging anywhere from pasta to pizza, meat and cheeses, seafood, and steak.
Tumblr media
Pizza
Mister 01 Extraordinary Pizza (Brickell, Wynwood, Miami Beach): Definitely try the Star Luca (the star-shaped, ricotta-filled pizza) or Claudio, another specialty pizza loaded with burrata stracciatella cheese and white truffle oil.
Harry’s Pizzeria (Design District, Coconut Grove): Crispy Polenta Fries and classic cheese pizza, you can’t go wrong.
Ironside (Little River): Bring your wine and enjoy cured meats and cheese boards before asking from one of four pies options: Fresca, Funghi, Capricciosa, Quattro Stagioni.
Crust (Miami River): Try the Fried Calamari or the Grilled Octopus before you build your Custom Pizza.
Pasta
Macchialina (Miami Beach): One of the best pasta restaurants in Miami.
Jaguar Sun (Brickell): You can try the Parker House Rolls and the Bucatini here.
Boia De (Miami): Mus tries: Tortellini in Brodo or the Ricotta Gnocchi.
Burgers
Ariete (Coconut Grove): The Chur Burger with two patties and the Ariete sauce for the win.
Lokal (Coconut Grove): One option here would be the Miami Heat Burger with spicy mayonnaise, sliced jack cheese, grilled onion, and yummy!
Kush (Wynwood): Get the Frita Burger, with melted wannabe Gruyere, guava jelly, potato six, and crispy bacon.
Casinos
While sports gambling is still not legal in Florida, there are a few places you can go for some poker or slot-machine action:
Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino (Hollywood): You might have noticed a huge guitar-shaped building when flying over Miami. That’s the new Guitar Hotel located inside Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood. Besides the casino and its incredible light show every night, there are also bars, lounges, pools, and cabanas if you’re not into the casino.
Gulfstream Park (Hallandale Beach): Live purebred racing Wednesday through Sunday, along with the slots and live poker games.

Twenty One - Galapagos, Day Seven
We were headed back to Santa Cruz island and had a 6am ferry across. We were not looking forward to the alarm ringing but as soon as it did we were up and packing as usual. We walked to the pier in the eerie darkness and boarded the boat as the sun rose. It was quite nice and calm. The 2 hour journey back wasn't quite so nice and calm. Luckily there was no mother and baby this time but two people were sick. We had taken our motion sickness tablets but still didn't feel quite right, we weren't sick though!
We disembarked and started walking with sea legs to the same hostel we has stayed in before but realising we were both hungry (we hadn't eaten to ward off the sea sickness) we stopped at a hipster cafe for breakfast. This was a brilliant idea as I had strawberry and Nutella crepes which were delicious and was the first real thing I'd eaten while feeling completely better. Mike had a huge breakfast of eggs, avocado, two croissants, bacon, a bowl of fruit, juice and coffee. We felt very satisfied after.
We had a quick break at the hostel and tried not to fall asleep before heading out for our final snorkel in the Galapagos. We walked to the pier and got a brief water taxi to a peninsula you couldn't walk to. It was then a 25 minutes walk through winding cactus lined pathways, a small beach and salt marshes to Las Grietas, an amazing canyon with crystal clear waters to snorkel in. Feeling smug we had brought our water shoes we found a spot people that didn't have water shoes wanted to get to. Snorkels on we got in to the water. There were some big fish but not as many as on the trips we'd been on, however snorkeling in the deep canyon was amazing!!
We snorkelled to the end and realised if we passed the mounds of rocks the water kept going. Mike followed some other swimmers by diving under the rocks but I wasn't brave enough. Instead I said I'd wait for him. While waiting I realised I could probably clamber over the rocks and so I did, incredibly ungracefully but successfully and with no one watching. I met Mike on the other side and we had the canyon to ourselves. We snorkelled and Mike dived down trying to get the best photos of the big fish with white lips. It was lovely snorkeling by ourselves without any other tourists around.
We clambered, dove and snorkelled back to our stuff and walked back to the little beach. Here we did the usual, read, relaxed and dozed. Having whiled away a couple of hours we got another water taxi back in search for the market's excellent empanadas. When we got to the market we were dismayed to find they weren't there! So instead we showered and ate our remaining Baños taffy in the hostel before going out again to find them. But yet again they weren't there!
Looking on the bright side we decided at least we'd had them once. We both got a small snack to have before dinner, I had an ice cream (one scoop fig and one scoop kinder beuno, both delicious!) and Mike had a pasty filled with rice and meat. On the way to the shop to buy snacks for our travel day the next day Mike spotted a stall selling pork buns and decided he was still hungry enough to have one. While he was queueing he also saw they had these big potato ball things and opted for that instead. What he didn't realise is that that came with pork, pig trotter, salad and sauce. So much for a little snack! I did try it all and it was delicious though.
We spent the rest of the afternoon successfully souvenir shopping. We bought t-shirts and a fish weaving I'd seen and loved in Baños but couldn't bear to part with $50 for but that I got for $25 here!
On our way back to the hostel we walked past the market and saw the empanadas were there! As Mike had eaten so much for his 'snack' and I wasn't too hungry we decided to have some for dinner. We both had a cheese one and then shared a shrimp one. They were both absolutely delicious!! After that we tried to find a bottle of coke sin azucar as we were both having a craving. We couldn't find one so opted for a Sprite instead. We sipped these while watching a movie but falling asleep half way through....again.

Azucena + Masaru | Arrowhead Golf Course Wedding Photos
Some weddings the tears don’t stop coming. They are those golden tears of joy. They started as soon as I got there, and I will tell you, it wasn’t just Mas and Azucena. I was already balling too. Mas and Azucena put so much intention into their wedding. I mean, really, they put so much intention to their relationship. The first thing Azucena told me when I arrived was the number of days they had been together. They had been counting it from the beginning because they knew. Somehow, they were “oddly perfect.” As they like to say.
I appreciate and love this sentiment. I do think, however, they are “perfectly perfect”. Everything about them makes me smile. I remember when I first met them and the way that Mas looked at Azucena, just when she was talking to me answering some question. He looked at her with intent, listening to everything she had to say and really internalizing it. It struck me. They are so good together because of this intent.
As I said, I could see it throughout their whole wedding day as well. From the gifts, they picked out for each other and the jewelry that Azucena wore to the blending of their families and cultures, and spectacular moments like the fireworks when they first kissed. Every detail was planned, thought through with meticulous detail and decided upon because they knew it would represent their relationship. It totally paid off. They had a wonderful day! With all the perfection that I see when I look at them and all the “oddly perfect” details like the sun shining while it dripped random raindrops. It could not have been a better day. Ryan and I were so very happy to be a part of it!
Congratulations Mas and Azucena! Here’s to years and years of “oddly perfect”!
–Katie

Out Getting Coffee
I had spent many days alone in the house so when my mom and brother came home it disturbed the silence I had grown accustomed to. Sound is something you can’t choose. If something is making a noise you have no choice but to hear it, it violates you. You can choose however, to not look at something but the only way to stop hearing something is to escape it. The slamming doors, the hard plastic sound of a bouncing basket ball, and my brothers puncturing voice was enough to make me finally want to leave. I called Henry back and told him to come over. I opened my front door to find him standing in my garden with his head tilted down and his hands clasped in front of his crotch, a girlish pose.
The first thing he said at me was that he was enlightened now and that he had video chatted with his guru twice while I was away. I felt sort of dreadful standing there, he was already starting with this shit, but I played along and asked him if he wanted to go get coffee at the usual place where it always starts with us. I asked him if he’d rather walk there since it was only four blocks away. He said yes and then no then yes again then he said let’s drive and then he said no, you drive and I said alright and then he asked me if I had my license and I said no and then he laughed his goofy, throaty laugh and handed me his keys. I had only ever driven two times before. Once, when I was in elementary school and I had lived down a great dirt road and my mom unexpectedly let me take the wheel of her truck. Another time more recently with an Argentine boy, he took me to a parking lot of a casino in Hialeah and tried to teach me but I wouldn't listen to any advice he was trying to give me. When I got into the drivers seat of Henry’s car I didn't even know how to properly take it out of park, but then I did after some consternation and verbal assistance from Henry who was growing nervous in the passenger seat. I began driving around my neighborhood hysterically laughing the entire time. I would stop about ten feet short of every stop sign and then hit the gas and fly past the crossing. I was too scared to go on any real road but we needed to cross Calle Ocho in order to get to the bakery. I exclaimed “I’m sweating like a bitch! I can’t do this!” So I pulled the car over and Henry took over. He told me I looked younger to him after that and I laughed. We crossed the street. At the bakery I ordered a colada with no azucar and the woman at the counter seemed to recognize me and smiled very warmly at me and called me some endearing name in Spanish. Henry and I sat with the diminutive plastic cups and the larger styrofoam one that contained the coffee. I pinched the rim of the styrofoam cup and poured the coffee into two of the small cups. I drank it and instantly repelled me, it was my first time getting this coffee with out sugar. “This tastes like death or nail polish remover,” I told Henry. He shook his head, “Why do people say they want something and once they get it they complain about it?”
And then I realized, Henry was the coffee.

Suicide Squad Most Wanted: El Diablo and Amanda Waller #5
Did Amanda Waller lose weight?
I hate how everybody knows about the Suicide Squad. It renders the whole project meaningless! As soon as people see them, they're all, "Oh yeah. The United States government is up to their usual bullshit again."
Anyway, bad shit goes down, the mission goes to shit, and Amanda Waller winds up drugged and hallucinating that she's lost the entire Squad. It's really the only way any members of the Suicide Squad die anymore. Either Amanda hallucinates it or the computers she has which show their heartbeats go on the fritz so the reader goes, "Oh my god! One of them is dead! I mean, it wasn't an on-panel death and nobody in the Squad ever really dies anymore but the computer shows one did! So I totally believe it!" The Ranking! -1! Get some balls and kill somebody already, DC, or else give Task Force X a new nickname that actually describes the team. Like Cozy Vacation Killing Club.

Planet Fitness inks lease in Little Havana
775 Southwest 8th Street and Arnaldo Cantero III
Planet Fitness is coming to East Little Havana.
The New Hampshire-based gym franchise inked a 14,800-square-foot lease at 775 Southwest 8th Street, which was previously home to a Walgreens site. The gym tenant plans to convert the building into a workout facility.
Arnaldo Cantero III, a principal at BGRS Commercial Real Estate Advisory, represented the landlord, Robert Wollberg, who is listed as the trustee of the Ortega Jr. Children’s Trust. Records show the trust paid $1.8 million for the site in 2001.
Planet Fitness is currently in the permitting process, Cantero said. The gym signed a long-term lease at the site, which spans a little more than an acre. Nearby are attractions such as Azucar Ice Cream Company and the Ball & Chain nightclub.
Walgreens moved to a newly built facility just across the street. “It’s very hard to get a retail location in ‘Calle Ocho’ this big because land values are so expensive,” Cantero said. The area is hot with boutique multifamily construction, which will likely bring more residents into the neighborhood, he added.
Health clubs and gyms that were often overlooked in previous years by landlords flush with other options are emerging as favorable tenants amid the nationwide retail slump. Other rapidly growing health club chains in South Florida include Orangetheory and Club Pilates.
