Episode 4 of the new documentary #Babies on #netflix talks about how babies acquire language. This episode summarises that babies learn language through the music (pitch, rhythm, flow) of speech. I am even more intrigued to learn the research Dr Erich Jarvis did back in 1990s. In his research, he found out that the vocal learning area in songbirds are right next to the motor cortex, suggesting motor circuits are activated in speech productions, which was believed to be sharing similar mechanisms to humans. This episode ends by encouraging parents to read to their children in supporting their language development. ❤️ all these research! They further support how speech, language, music and movement are all intertwined in us! So if you’re an expecting mom, start singing your favourite song to your bub, because your baby’s ears start to develop as early as at 16 weeks gestation. If you’re a new mom, sing to your baby, engage them with #playsongs, soothe them with #lullabies, transition them to different daily routines (eg. diaper change, bath, dressing, mealtimes) with #transitionsongs. If you work with children, use songs as a strategy, throw in a few #storysongs whenever you can 🎵 Music is POWERFUL. Music makes us human, and humans makes music. #worldmusictherapyday2020 #conbriomusictherapy #babiesconbrio #singtoyourbaby #musicandspeech #musicandmovement https://www.instagram.com/p/B9MY_-hpYa3/?igshid=conk59xqg4wu

One huge difference between music therapy sessions and music sessions is that, I never hold my children/ clients’ hands in playing musical instruments. I let them choose what they want to play and how they want to play. It’s all about the power of #choiceandcontrol and #childledplay. Joel at 13 months created something that sounds like an #oceandrum. How wonderful ❤️ #earlychildhoodmusictherapy #earlychildhoodmusiceducation #conbriomusictherapy #babiesconbrio https://www.instagram.com/p/CThfETjBoRw/?utm_medium=tumblr

I pioneered the first inclusive music group for 0-2 years in Singapore in 2019. It concluded when I was half-way pregnant with my no.3. Recently a lot of people have been asking if I will resume the @babiesconbrio. Yet I am not sure if I am able to balance mothering and work with three kids in tow. Those who are in the same boat, how do you balance your work and family? I can only imagine it takes a lot more efforts in planning and execution. I shall sleep on it. #dilemma #earlychildhoodeducation #earlychildhoodmusic #earlychildhoodmusicandmovement #earlychildhoodmusicprogram #earlychildhoodmusictherapy #earlychildhoodmusictherapysingapore #babiesconbrio #conbriomusictherapy https://www.instagram.com/p/CMwPhEhHjog/?igshid=rdk6irs93zso

This morning before school, my daughter played and sang a song spontaneously about her being a mermaid who swam to the shore and found a baby there. It was such a beautiful, musical and magical moment between her and her younger brother. The minds of 3 year olds are full of stories filled with imaginations and spontaneous songs. #threeyearolds #developmentalmilestones #musicalconnections #babiesconbrio #conbriomusictherapy #earlychildhoodmusic #earlychildhoodmusiceducation #earlychildhoodmusicandmovement #earlychildhoodmusictherapy https://www.instagram.com/p/CLWGNo7HbSD/?igshid=1hswpdmugz87h

Any mommy/ daddy music therapists out there struggling to provide for their own babies with the quality/ quantity of music that we know from research is great for bonding and development? I am a mom with three children 3 years apart. Sometimes I may portray to be managing well on the outside, but these days I am just feeling tired and am having some low moments especially when I had no time to feed my soul. My first born got the most music time with mommy. We had a weekly moms and bubs music group at home. My second one tagged along to my weekly inclusive music group. My youngest one listened to his brother’s piano, his sister’s glockenspiel and A LOT OF Baby John on tv and pop music when we are out and about. Amid my very busy mothering schedule, I try to fill in a weekly/ bi-weekly/ monthly music time just with my youngest. I can tell from his eyes and smiles that he craves the connection, and he is mesmerised by the beauty of the music. To all daddies and mommies out there, please sing your favourite tune to your babies whenever you can. It feeds your souls and theirs. #musicbondingtime #soulfeedingtime #earlychildhood #earlychildhoodmusic #musicandbabies #conbriomusictherapy #babiesconbrio #connectionthroughmusic https://www.instagram.com/p/CKSlmyBH-gR/?igshid=jxglbte75zmx

Answer to the previous post! A step stool is the trick! I recently bought this piano pedal extender for my 6 year old son. Wouldn’t have expected it to be sturdy enough to take my weight 😆 so I have been seating my 5 months old infant on my lap while “embracing” him with my arms. It’s much more fun then wearing him in the carrier while playing the piano! Give it a try if you have an infant to engage musically at home or at work. I’m sure any stool will work fine! #creativity #pianopedalextender #earlychildhoodmusic #earlychildhoodmusictherapy #earlychildhoodmusictherapysingapore #conbriomusictherapy #babiesconbrio https://www.instagram.com/p/CJDPmitnrje/?igshid=1ml4xry0z1lkr

Have a guess what song Joli was playing on the glockenspiel? See the contentment in her expressions after she played the tune? It wasn’t a perfect performance but it didn’t matter to her. Musical boos fade away and they don’t last. Music brings joy and plenty of health-related benefits. You may ask if I taught her to play the tune? I did- but she didn’t learn from me because she is too young to receive formal music education. Her brother might have taught her using his self-created #colourcodedmusicnotation. I would say, she learnt it by herself, from observations, explorations, and practising whenever she wanted to. All I did was to provide her with a musical environment by singing to her before and after she was born, making music with her, making up lyrics spontaneously, and providing her with musical instruments that suit her developmental stages. #musiceducationforkids #earlymusicexposure #conbriomusictherapy #babiesconbrio #musicandmovement #earlymusic #glockenspiel https://www.instagram.com/p/CIAgMlrHnEm/?igshid=1jnuryr6gyfx3

Look how we spontaneously staged the nursery rhyme, Little Miss Muffet? We made our own tuffet, and curds and whey, and learnt the preposition “beside” with a toy spider 🕷 . #speechanddrama #nurseryrhymes #earlychildhoodeducation #earlychildhoodmusic #earlyliteracy #conbriomusictherapy #babiesconbrio #learningthroughsong #littlemissmuffet sat on a tuffet, eating some curds and whey. Along came a spider, who sat down beside her, and frightened Miss Muffet away. https://www.instagram.com/p/CEESjGDnOlR/?igshid=6ed6i4kge2md
