Happy Birthday #shinichisuzuki ! The #japanesemusician #violinteacher and founder of the #suzukimethod of #musiceducation was born on #17october 1898 in #nagoyajapan Suzuki believed all children could learn anything well given a nurturing and rich environment. When accepting students, Suzuki did not screen children for ability, but rather the family’s willingness to participate in his program of education. Here are a few books from my personal music library pertaining to Suzuki, to include translations of #nurturedbylove by Waltraud Suzuki and Kyoko Selden and Suzuki’s own original reference recording of #suzukiviolinschool books 1 and 2 reference recording on vinyl! I brought this LP to a recent #suzukigroup class and the children asked how does the record fit inside the CD player! They had never seen a #vinylrecord before! #suzukiviolinteacher #musiceducationforkids #musiceducationmatters #musiclibrary #stringplayer #musicpedagogy #violinpedagogy #violinclass #suzukimusic #suzukimusiceducation #beautifulmusic #musicforkidsandfamily #musiclessonsforchildren #musiclessonsforkids #violinlessonsforkids (at Washington D.C.) https://www.instagram.com/p/CVIpNonAQWJ/?utm_medium=tumblr

Duke Ellington’s Nutcracker Suite by Anna Harwell Celenza and illustrated by Don Tate is a fun story for children about the 1960 album adapting Tchaikovsky’s classic ballet into big band dance music. Suzuki kids are familiar with the music of J.S. Bach and will find fascinating parallels between the two master musicians. Both were virtuoso keyboardists and master improvisers, band leaders, composed both secular and devotional music, composed instrumental solos with specific musicians in mind, had decades long careers and synthesized all the musical styles of their times. I highly recommend this book for children of all ages! #dukeellington #nutcracker #jazznutcracker #nutcrackersuite #tchaikovskynutcracker #tchaikovsky #jsbach #christmasbooksforkids #christmasbookshelf #suzukigroup #suzukiteacher #musicteachersofinstagram #violinteacher #musiceducationmatters #musiceducationforkids #musicteacherlife #musichistory #dcmusician #booksforchildren #bigbandjazz #suzukitriangle #storytimebooks #booksaboutmusic #booksaboutmusicians #dontate (at Washington D.C.) https://www.instagram.com/p/CJL0K-EgaFi/?igshid=1paq4n3y7pxiq

Have a guess what song Joli was playing on the glockenspiel? See the contentment in her expressions after she played the tune? It wasn’t a perfect performance but it didn’t matter to her. Musical boos fade away and they don’t last. Music brings joy and plenty of health-related benefits. You may ask if I taught her to play the tune? I did- but she didn’t learn from me because she is too young to receive formal music education. Her brother might have taught her using his self-created #colourcodedmusicnotation. I would say, she learnt it by herself, from observations, explorations, and practising whenever she wanted to. All I did was to provide her with a musical environment by singing to her before and after she was born, making music with her, making up lyrics spontaneously, and providing her with musical instruments that suit her developmental stages. #musiceducationforkids #earlymusicexposure #conbriomusictherapy #babiesconbrio #musicandmovement #earlymusic #glockenspiel https://www.instagram.com/p/CIAgMlrHnEm/?igshid=1jnuryr6gyfx3

Happy Birthday Dr Suzuki! Shinichi Suzuki was born on this day, Oct 17th in 1899 in Nagoya, Japan. Suzuki’s family owned a violin factory (still in operation today); however the young Suzuki had no interest in music until he heard a recording by Mischa Elman as a young man. After hearing Elman’s tone Suzuki decided to learn violin and eventually studied in Europe where he befriended the great Physicist Albert Einstein, who was also a violinist. After returning to Japan, Suzuki developed his method for violin teaching based on the assumption that every child can learn to play music expressively as they learn their native language by creating a nurturing and stimulating environment. Suzuki was able to leverage technology as Japan’s consumer electronics industry was developing, emphasized the role of listening to beautiful music from a young age! Suzuki’s method has been adapted for many instruments and voice. Here are a few of the books in my personal collection written by or about Suzuki: Nurtured by Love - Suzuki (Waltraud and Seldon translations) Young Children’s Talent Education & Its Method - Suzuki (Seldon) To Learn with Love - William & Constance Starr My Life with Suzuki - Waltraud Suzuki Suzuki Changed my Life- Masaaki Honda The Suzuki Violinist - William Starr #suzukimethod #suzukimethodviolin #suzukiviolinmethod #suzukiviolin #suzukiviola #violinteacher #violintechnique #violinpedagogy #stringplayer #musiceducation #musiceducationmatters #musiceducationforkids #musicianlife #musicteacher #suzukiteacher #musicteacherlife #musicteachersofinstagram #violininstructor #practiceroom #suzukitriangle #musicsaveslives #musicsaves #shinichisuzuki #nurturedbylove #mothertongue #talenteducation (at Washington D.C.) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGcUE59gJOG/?igshid=ymgokckg8uf4

Lately my Suzuki violin students and I have been spending a few minutes during Sat morning group classes exploring music related children’s books. Tomorrow we’ll read the second installment of Ada’s Violin by Susan Hood. It’s an inspiring true story of how an impoverished community in Paraguay comes together around music to give their children hope for a better future. The full page illustrations by Sally Wern Comport are rich and colorful. This is an inspiring story for children and adults alike. More information about this amazing true story can be found on TED Talks and YouTube. #adasviolin #suzukigroup #suzukitriangle #booksforchildren #childrensbooks #childrensbookillustration #musicbooks #musicbooksforchildren #suzukiviolinteacher #suzukiteacher #violinteacher #violinteachers #recycledorchestra #landfillharmonic #musiceducation #musicsaveslives #musiceducationmatters #musiceducationforkids #practicesaveslives #youthsymphony #youthorchestra #violin #guitar #cello #beautifulmusic #musicsavesyourlife (at Washington D.C.) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGahjgUgVDR/?igshid=sgg9y480pc9o

Ideally, children should only begin instructional instrumental lessons at age 5, once they have acquired the ability of audiation as suggested by Edwin Gordon (1927-2015), music educator/ theorist. Audiation refers to the cognitive process by which we hear and comprehend music in our head, even when there is no music playing. My son had a trial lesson with a teacher with a doctoral degree in piano few months back and was rejected, since he was “too young” to start. I reviewed the literature and talked to various esteemed pianists/ violinists and spurred a discussion on what’s the best age to begin instrumental lesson in young children. The article “Music as a first language” (published on Perspectives: Journal of the Early Childhood Music & Movement Association, 11(1-2), 5-6), by Bolton (2016) revised Gordon’s music learning theory and came up with this pyramid of the sequence of music learning, called the Music Learning Vocabularies as you can see in the second picture. Learning music is very similar to learning a language. The prerequisites are 1. Listening- our jobs to provide our children to a huge repertoire of songs 2. Singing and chanting 3. Thinking, audiating and improvising Only after that, the child is ready for instructional instrumental lessons that include reading and writing music! From the video, Joli (3 months to 2 years) are now at the second stage of the Music Learning Vocabularies, whereas Jason (4 months to 5 years) is currently at the reading stage. A child’s musical milestones should not be defined by his/her chronological age, but if the child has reached those stages! Music has such vast benefits in our health and well-being, it brings us joy, opens up opportunities for our children to learn about the world, to fulfill their sensorial urges and needs through instrumental exploration. Special thanks to Ms Natalie @creativehearts.sg for creating such beautiful piano instructional books with child-friendly sized notations and simple tunes with fun lyrics, Jason and Joli truly enjoy their weekly piano lessons (although Joli really was just dancing, singing and having picnic to her brother’s piano music). #musiceducationforkids https://www.instagram.com/p/B1dWMGvBxRX/?igshid=1vfrt184rdf3z

His face wore a look of pure contentment ❤️ Jason at 4 years 7 months. Do I teach him how to play the ukulele? Yes; but informally and only when he approached it himself. All I did was to model, and provided him with the exposure to a musical environment. #ukuleleforkids #4yearsold #conbriomusictherapy #babiesconbrio #musiceducationforkids #musiceducation https://www.instagram.com/p/B0R_9cAhGl6/?igshid=wyk20ss3qfpo

Excited to be teaching my first live #suzukigroup class @levine_music since the pandemic restrictions began last spring! Our #youngmusicians enjoy the challenge game. Each #youngviolinist randomly chooses a piece they can play well and performs it according to a randomly chosen challenge. I adapted this idea from a @twosetviolin video which featured Hilary Hahn @violincase performing a Paganini Caprice while hula hooping! (Definitely look this up on YouTube!) We don’t hula hoop in my class but we have many fun and educational challenges to choose from. Three videos: 1) Choose your piece. Today’s winner is #waltz by #johannesbrahms ~swipe left~ 2) Choose your challenge! Play the piece with the opposite bowings! ~swipe left~ 3) Perform for the class! Depending on the child and the combination of piece and challenge, if I see a child struggling I may simply do the challenge myself (and include some funny mistakes), or have the child choose a different challenge, or do it all together as a group. In my experience the favorite challenge is “lie on your back while playing!” Note: I am using #decidenow , which is a free app for creating your own custom spin wheels! Children enjoy pushing buttons as well as opportunities to “game-ify” practice. Letting children choose their piece and challenge gives them a feeling of ownership of the practice process. Of course, the menu of options should be carefully chosen by the teacher or parent. #brahms #brahmswaltz #jbrahms #violinteacher #violinpractice #violinlessonsforkids #violintips #musiceducation #violinfun #suzukiteacher #suzukiclass #suzukiviolinmethod #suzukiviolinteacher #suzukiviolinschool #loveviolin #gamifylearning #gamifyyourclassroom #violinguy #musiceducationmatters #musiceducationforkids (at Washington D.C.) https://www.instagram.com/p/CT7lkmVgm37/?utm_medium=tumblr
