October Update

It's been a few months since I last posted. Most of what I've done on the layout (besides running it), has been improvements to existing parts of the layout. I've rewired the sensors for my Arduino-driven turntable so they're more reliable, and managed to fix up some other bugs with it.

This staging area at the end of my layout was originally just meant to represent an interchange with a standard-gauge line. As you can see from the photos above, I'd already started working on it. I forgot to take a proper 'before' photo.

The siding that curves off to the right of the photo was built as a locomotive parking track, but wasn't really used. It didn't really feel right to park one of my engines off-stage. So I added scenery to this section.

Here's what it looks like now. It's a designated diesel parking area. I was also able to fit a short section of standard-gauge track at the back, and I've got some O scale boxcars that'll sit on it once it's weathered. I've been wanting to get this standard gauge track on for ages. In fact, the bumper at the end of that track is my first O scale scratchbuilt structure.

With this completed, the layout scenery finally felt finished. As such, I've now started adding details to the layout. I've accumulated a large amount of detail castings over the years, a few at a time, for just this moment. People, animals, barrels, that sort of thing. I'm planning to add details to the whole layout, but I started with this extension, and some of the locomotives:

Now, having the diesel parked at the diesel facility left one of the turntable tracks empty.

Back when I got into On30, I purchased two Bachmann Climax locomotives. However, I could never get them to run properly. The motor speed would drop off after half throttle, and they would constantly lose power.

So I took them apart, to see if I could fix them. It turned out that one of the windings in one of the motors was shorting, and so I fixed that up. Testing revealed that both motors were working fine on DC voltage after this. As such, I upgraded them both to modern decoders, a Tsunami 2, with a KA-4 keepalive module in them. This fixed up the power loss problem.

I also made a few small modifications & repairs. I'd given them some additional details, back when I'd first purchased them. This time around, I gave no. 1 a Banta Modelworks closed cab. The other major change was repairing the front and rear pilots, as the plastic struts holding them had broken. These were replaced with metal castings. I made the pilot boards from coffee sticks, trimmed to length and painted black.

With that, I put them into service on my layout. These are some of my favourite-looking models, and it's good to have them running again.

For now, I'm mostly going to be focusing on adding details to the layout, to bring it to life.

One Last Engine for the BVLC

A couple of months ago, I was able to relocate a lighting support and add an additional track to my turntable.  As such, I needed one more locomotive to complete my roster.  I've been wanting an articulated locomotive for a while, and I decided to make a Bachmann 2-4-4-2 into a tank engine.

My original plan was to use a side-tank kit from Backwoods Miniatures.  However, when I contacted them to purchase one, I was advised that they had ceased trading last year.  As such, I decided to 3D print my own kit.

After measuring the model's footplate and boiler, I re-created them in Blender.  I designed the cab and side tanks from scratch, as well as an extension for the cab floor at the rear.  For the fuel bunker, I copied the one I'd made for the 2-6-2 tank engine and narrowed it to match the width of the cab.

Once this was done, I uploaded the model to Shapeways for printing.  The cab walls were printed as one piece, however this didn't work out.  In order to get them to turn out, I separated the four walls, added locating tabs and slots, then printed all four walls lying down.  I also removed the rivet details along the side tanks, as this was not printable.

In order to fit the floor, I had to remove the tender walkway and the plastic detailing across the rear of the chassis.  Once this was done, I was left with four holes at the chassis.  The floor extension was designed to fit into the two inner ones, then screw in place through the original cab holes.

I fit the cab floor extension temporarily, using two of the original cab screws.  After confirming that the coupler height was correct, I painted the cab floor extension and put it back in place, using some epoxy to reinforce it.

Using the side tanks as a guide, I cut the piping on the boiler flush with them.

In order to mount the side tanks, a couple of modifications needed to be made to the running board.  There's a curve where the running board narrows, and this needed to be filed down to a right angle.  Once this was done, I drilled the mounting holes for the side tanks.  I'd printed a template for this along with the rest of the 3D printed parts.  A 2.5mm drill bit was used, to allow a M2 screw to pass through and enter the side tank.

With the model ready, I prepared the 3D printed parts.  After drilling out the pilot holes I'd left in cab sides and tanks, I formed grab irons from copper wire.  The handrails on the cab and steps on the tanks were made from 0.8mm wire, with 0.5mm used for the handles on the tank lids.  For the cab door handles, I used two of the brass castings left over from my boxcab diesel.

I wanted to add a front deck to the model, to give it a bit more bulk.  This was scratchbuilt with styrene and 1mm copper wire.

Several replacement headlights are included with the 2-4-4-2, in two different sizes.  I was unable to accommodate a headlight on the rear of the bunker.  Instead, I put mounting holes for one of the smaller headlights on the cab roof, including a couple of holes for the LED leads.

Once the glue was dry, I masked off the front of the headlight, then painted and lettered the 3D printed parts.

After the paint had dried, I installed the speaker, then mounted the fuel bunker.

My next step was to install the cab side steps, which I printed in White, Strong and Flexible plastic.  This is due to the brittle nature of the Frosted Ultra Detail material.  As I'd learned with my 2-6-2T, small parts made with FUD can break very easily.

Each of these steps has a tab on the rear end, which was glued into a slot in the side of the cab floor extension.  The other end of the cab steps was glued to the side of the original chassis.  I had to use epoxy for this, as CA turned out to be too brittle.

I then soldered wires to the leads from the roof-mounted LED, as well as a 1K resistor.  They were painted black and glued to the cab roof.  After installing the roof on the cab, I ran the wires down the front left corner of the cab to the slot in the front wall.  I positioned them so that they couldn't be seen through the front or side windows, then glued them in place.

In order to install the decoder, I needed to extend and redo some of the model's wiring.  All I had to do to remove the boiler was undo the two screws directly under the firebox.  With them removed, the boiler just lifts off the front of the chassis, revealing the mechanism.

After disconnecting the sockets for the tender connections, I extended all of the wires.  These were then run through the wiring channel on the left side of the boiler.  In order to allow the wires outside the cab, I drilled a hole in the cover that had held the socket on that side.  After running the wires through it, I used a black permanent marker to colour them black.

While the boiler was still off, I drilled a new mounting hole for the air pump.  This was originally located just in front of the cab, and I'd removed it earlier to clear the side tanks.

At this point, I realised I'd overlooked something.  With the wires run through the slot at the front of the cab, removing the cab once the decoder was in place would be quite tricky.  As such, any driver figure would have to be installed before the decoder.  So I found an appropriate figure, painted him and installed him in the cab.

Once that was done, I pulled the wires through the slot at the front of the cab.  I screwed it in place, using two of the original cab screws at the front and two M2x8mm screws at the rear.  I then installed the right side tank.  This fits into the notch on the front of the cab, and is held in place via a M2x6mm screw through one of the holes I drilled in the footplate earlier.

After mounting the decoder to the side of the boiler, I wired it up.  The side tanks are designed to go over a TSU-1100 mounted vertically, with space for the keep-alive capacitor as well.  I cut the wires so that the joins were in the gap between the decoder and the cab, to ensure that the width of the heat-shrink tubing didn't interfere with the fit of the side tanks.

With that done, I installed the left side tank and tested the locomotive on my programming track.  Once I'd confirmed it was working, I programmed it.  It was my first time using a TSU-1100 for a steam engine.  I spent an enjoyable hour or two going through all the different sound choices, picking the bell, chuff and whistle sounds that sounded right for the model.

With that done, there were a few last things that needed to be sorted out.  Firstly, I had to repair the rear pilot.  It had been broken off during construction.  I glued some 1x1.5mm styrene strip to the rear of the footboard, to bring the rear of the footboard level with the rear of the pilot.  Once that had dried, I cut another four strips long enough to reach the top of the pilot.  After gluing these to the back of the first set of styrene strips, I stuck the assembly back in place and painted it black.

When I'd first started working on this model, I'd realised that the original tailing truck wasn't long enough to go under the extended cab floor.  An additional pilot truck was included in the box, which had a solid wheel instead of the spoked wheel that was installed on the model by default.  I'd replaced the trailing truck with this, however it still didn't look right.  All the other wheels were spoked, and I prefer that look.

Instead of ordering another pilot from Bachmann, I re-used a spoked pilot axle from an earlier project that hadn't quite worked out.  After enlarging the axle hole in the Bachmann pilot, I replaced the flat wheels with this spoked axle.  I used my NMRA gauge to ensure it was in gauge, then painted the sides of the wheels black.

While that was drying, I bent some 0.8mm wire into shape and installed it on the air pump.  An air tank from my spare parts box was also added.

Once the pilot axle had dried, I installed it on the locomotive.  The wheels on the modified pilot were slightly smaller than the ones that came with the model.  As such, I put the original pilot at the rear of the model, and installed the modified one at the front.  I also installed the pilot deck at the front.

My last step was to install the wood load at the back.

Once this was done, the model was ready to go into service on my layout.

A Replacement No. 2 for the BVLC

Part 1: A Tale of Two Connies

Yes, I'm doing another locomotive build.  Unlike the others, this one has a bit of my personal On30 history behind it.

When I first got into On30, my first purchases were an On30 Forney and an On30 Shay, both made by Bachmann.  This was back in 2010, so the Shay came from one of the production runs which suffered from the split gear problem.  It did have split gears, and Bachmann did provide replacements.  After swapping them out, the model seemed to run.

Fast-forward to 2018.  I've run a few operating sessions by this point, and I've noticed that the Shay, BVLC #2, seems to have some difficulty running.  It could pull itself and its train, but it always seemed to struggle on the gradient leading up to the log loading area at Camp D.  Yet the gears weren't split at all.  Things came to a head while I was filming the layout video I uploaded a couple of weeks ago.  It was meant to have a shot of a locomotive descending the grade, and I picked the Shay for it.  Going up it barely moved, and coming down it lurched terribly.

Upon closer inspection, I found that the clips which hold the driveshaft to the trucks were loose, so the gears weren't meshing properly.  I tried replacing them with new clips, as replacement trucks were sold out on the Bachmann website.  However, this failed to correct the problem.  The rear truck ended up with the gears not meshing at all.  On the test-run following the replacement, the Shay backed halfway up the grade, then started rolling forwards.  While the motor was still running backwards. As such, it now lives in a display cabinet in my living room.

This left a gap in my locomotive roster.  So naturally I decided to build a replacement, a new no. 2.  While my layout currently has locos ranging from 0-4-0 to 2-6-2, I've been wanting to include a small consolidation in my roster.  I'd tried this in 2016,  with a Roundhouse 'old-time' 2-8-0 which I had left over from my brief 2009 foray into standard-gauge HO scale.

This was as far as it got.  After building the body, I found that the model wouldn't run on my layout.  As such, it was confined to the 'graveyard', my shoebox of unsuccessful projects.  This was my first attempt at converting a HO scale locomotive to On30, so it put me off doing that sort of conversion with steam engines for a while.

Over the next two years, parts of it were stripped off and used in other projects.  In fact, the tender I'd kitbashed ended up behind the Forney when I kitbashed it into an 0-4-0:

But now, I decided to have another go at converting this locomotive.  I'd had a couple more years experience since than, and learned a few new techniques, including 3D printing.  However, I'd re-used the motor from the original attempt in order to get no. 9, my 'American Prince', up and running.  As such, I decided to purchase another donor engine and have a completely fresh start.

On the Roundhouse 2-8-0, the middle drivers are blind.  The front and rear drivers do have flanges, but the rear drivers have traction tyres.  I've never liked traction tyres, as when they fail, the locomotive becomes unusable.  On my first attempt, I'd taken them out and filled in the groove on the wheels with Bullfrog Snot.

This time, however, the replacement was much quicker and simpler.  I still had the chassis from my first attempt, so I just replaced the rear drivers on the new engine with the lead drivers from the original one.  Once this was done, I tested it on my workbench.  Fortunately the quartering lined up, and the chassis ran smoothly in both directions.

My next step was to install a small, non-sound DCC decoder in the tender.  This particular decoder doesn't have back-EMF functionality, which was just what I was after.

Given my problems the first time around, I wanted to ensure the locomotive would work on the layout.  Once the decoder was installed, I ran the loco over every single section of track on the layout, in both directions.

Only one section presented a problem, this short piece of track coming off the passing track at Camp A.  When coming from the side of the loop closest to the fascia, the loco would always derail.  After playing around with it for a bit, I found that putting a 1mm thick styrene strip under the sleepers on the fascia side fixed the problem.

My next step was to adjust the power pickups on the locomotive.  On both this and the first one, I'd noticed that the pickup wipers didn't touch the wheels all the time, just when the wheels were pushed in towards the chassis.  As such, the tender wheels seem to provide the bulk of the power pickup.

In order to rectify this, I bent the pickup wipers outward so they touched the rear of the wheels, then put them back in.  Given that I'd made a change to the chassis, I then performed another test run.  This time, the locomotive ran dismally.  It took a much higher starting voltage to get it moving, and it struggled with curves.

That was when the penny dropped.

The first time around, I'd made the same modification, but I hadn't tested the chassis.  Now this modification was making this new chassis act the same way.  At the time, I'd just thought this was due to the wires rubbing on the flywheel.  After bending the wipers back to their original positions, the locomotive once again ran as expected.  At this point, I ordered a Soundtraxx currentkeeper module to go along with the TSU-2200 decoder.

Now that I had confirmed the locomotive was running smoothly and wouldn't have a problem with the track, I was ready to start construction itself.  Unlike the other HO scale models I've converted, this locomotive has both a cast metal body and a metal chassis.  The only plastic parts were the cab and the smokebox door.  As such, the body contains most of the weight for the locomotive.

In order to keep this, I decided to build the On30 body on top of the original body.  I started by removing the cab, then sawing the domes and smokestack off.  I also removed the original handrails, putting them and their stanchions aside for later use.

My next step was to provide an anchor for the rear of the body.  The rear wall of the HO scale cab had a notch at the bottom, which fit over a tab on the chassis.  I cut off this section of the rear wall, and glued it in position.  I had to use some 2x2mm styrene strip to position it far enough out from the rear of the body.

There’s one point at which the original pilot deck is attached to the chassis by a thin section of metal.  On both my original attempt and this one, I accidentally broke it off at this spot.  As such, I decided to completely replace it.  To mount the new deck, I glued some 2x2mm styrene strips along the remaining part of the original one - one on either side of the small protrusion at the front.

With this done, I made the pilot deck itself.  I cut the initial shape from 1.5mm styrene, then marked out the centreline and fitted the coupler.  I then glued 2x2mm styrene strip around the edge, leaving a gap for the coupler.

After this, I glued 0.25mm styrene sheet across the top, to conceal the hole for the coupler screw.  Once it had dried, I made the coupler lift bar from some 0.5mm copper wire and four of the handrail stanchions I'd removed from the HO scale body.

While that dried, I turned my attention to the body itself.  I used 1mm styrene to extend the footplate, then added 2x2mm styrene strip around the edges.  I also added two short sections of this strip just in front of the raised section that held the original cab in place, to bring the front cab wall forward.

With the footplate done, my next step was to add the boiler.  I wanted a bigger boiler than the one I'd used on my 2-6-2 tank engine conversions, so I grabbed the next biggest PVC pipe I had.  This has a 33mm outside diameter, which scales out to about 62".  This worked, as I was after a 'chunky' look for this engine, something similar to East Broad Top No. 15.

I cut and filed the boiler into shape, so that it would fit over the original HO scale boiler while leaving the bottom of the original smokebox exposed.  This was to ensure the body would fit properly onto the chassis.

Once the boiler had dried, I filled in the gap between the new boiler and the original smokebox with body putty.  When it was dry, I sanded it to shape and cut it to fit around the smokebox support on the chassis.

The next step was to sort out the rear of the footplate.  On the original model, the wires ran straight out of the back of the body, above the tab that held it in place.  I wanted to have them a bit lower.  In order to do this, I used 2x2mm styrene strips to extend the rear of the body.  I left a gap around the hole in the section I'd cut from the original cab.  These were cut 2mm narrower than the footplate, to leave room for the cab walls.

I then covered the strips with a piece of 0.5mm styrene, and filed it to fit.  This left a small gap at the bottom, through which the wires will be run.

With the basic body done, I made the cab.  Each wall was made from two layers of 1mm styrene.  The windows in the inner layer were cut so that there would be a sill around the insides.  They were also cut 1mm shorter at each end, to accommodate the outside walls.  I also added cutouts on the sides, then put 2.5x0.5mm styrene strips in them to simulate the wood paneling I've seen on other engines.  It's a look that I like.

Once the cab was assembled, I glued it in place and used styrene to fill out the floor.  I then used a section of pipe and styrene to build firebox, to cover the original.  I also added the handrail stanchions to the boiler, and drilled holes for the handrails in the front of the cab.

On past builds, I'd either used a brass casting for the smokebox door and built the boiler to fit, or I'd made it out of styrene.  This time, however, I wanted to try something different.  So I designed them in Blender, along with a few other detail parts.  I did a version with rivets and a version with bolts, to hedge my bets.  I knew the bolt heads would print, as I'd used them on my Bachmann 2-6-0 pilot.  It was the first time I'd tried 3D printing rivets, though.

The other detail parts included a cowcatcher pilot, the front and rear headlights, and the round bits that go on the front of the tender.  The headlights were adapted from the ones I'd designed for my 3D printed boxcab diesel.  Once I'd finished the design, I uploaded them to Shapeways.

At this point, I was ready to start on the tender.  This will be covered in part 2 of this write-up.

An American Prince for the BVLC

In one of my previous posts, I outlined how I'd used some spare parts from failed conversions to kitbash a no. 9 for the BVLC:

However, this model didn't really run smoothly.  It had a 'limp', and a tendency to slow down at a couple of spots on the track that didn't give any other engines trouble.  I tried to fix these faults.  However, I was unable to do so, and ended up with a model that could barely run in a straight line.  As such, I decided to consign it to the 'graveyard', my shoebox of failed projects.

While doing so, the question of what to do for no. 9 came to mind.  I did consider purchasing one of the outside-frame 4-4-0s made by Bachmann, but they're too long to fit on my turntable.  However, there was another mechanism in the graveyard that I thought I may be able to use.

Back when I'd first gotten into On30, my very first attempt at a HO-->On30 conversion was a Backwoods Miniatures 2-6-2ST kit, which used the mechanism from a Bachmann HO scale saddle-tank switcher.  At the time, I hadn't been able to get it to work satisfactorily, either.  The short wheelbase didn't provide for much of a power pickup footprint, and the mechanism had a tendency to 'bunnyhop' down the track.  Furthermore, in the time since then, I'd 'borrowed' the brushes and springs from this model's motor to keep another one going.

However, there was one other model in the graveyard, a Roundhouse 'old-time' 2-8-0 which I'd attempted to convert.  It had run into the same problems as the 2-6-2 above - namely, the mechanism would stall at some points that didn't give the other engines any problems.  But although the chassis from this model wasn't reliable, the motor from it was still good.

I tried fitting the Roundhouse motor to the Bachmann 0-6-0 chassis, just to see if I could get it to work.  After enlarging the hole at the rear of the motor mount, I had to file down the sides of the mount to allow the Roundhouse motor to sit flat.  Once it was installed, it meshed nicely with the Bachmann gears and ran smoothly.  Unlike this mechanism's original motor, this one has a flywheel, which helps with the smoothness.

Once I'd confirmed that the mechanism ran properly, I recovered the pilot deck from the 2-6-2 pictured at the start of this entry.  After cutting it to fit this chassis, I glued it in place.

With the mechanism working, my next step was to figure out what to do with the body.  I wanted to do a tender engine, in order to have extra power pickup from the tender wheels.  I still had the tender left over from my Bachmann 2-4-4-2 conversion, so I decided to use that.  However, the width of the motor mount and the motor itself meant that a narrow, tender-engine style boiler (e.g. the Bachmann Forney) wouldn't be able to fit.  As such, it looked as though I would need to use the saddle-tank body and tender together.

As strange as it may sound, there is actually a prototype for such an engine.  Albeit from the United Kingdom, rather than the United States.  This is Prince, a 'George England' locomotive from the Ffestiniog Railway in Wales.  It's designed as a tender-tank engine, with water in the saddle over the boiler and coal in the tender behind the cab.  I decided that this new BVLC No. 9 would be a similar tender-tank engine, an American 'Prince'.

However, this engine would have a slightly different backstory.  Instead of being built like this from the beginning, I figured that the BVLC would have bought it as a 2-6-2T in 1935, from another railroad that had closed down.  When they started using it, they found that although it had adequate water tanks, its fuel capacity left a lot to be desired.  They had a tender rescued from a wreck a couple of years previously, so they rebuilt it and modified the tank engine into a 2-6-0, keeping the saddle over the boiler.

With that in mind, I set about converting the body from the Backwoods Miniatures kit.  I dismantled the cab and soaked it in acetone, to remove the old glue and paint.  As it was made of etched brass, I was able to use a pair of scissors to trim the doors and rear walls from it.  I also added a dome with a whistle on it, and a spare headlight from the 2-4-4-2 on the front.  I had be careful running the wires from the headlight, to prevent them rubbing against the flywheel when assembled.  I also used 0.5mm styrene to make a cab roof.

In order to use the tender from the 2-4-4-2, I needed to make a few modifications.  The first was to re-install a rear headlight.  I'd cut off the mounting for it to use on my 4-4-0, so I built a new mount using styrene.  My 2-4-4-2 didn't come with a wood load either.  As such, I used styrene to build a compartment for the wood in the gap left by the coal load.  Several mounting holes for the 2-4-4-2's coal and oil tank loads were filled in with body putty, and the whole thing was left to dry.

Once the putty had dried, I primed and painted the body and tender shell.  While these were drying, I installed a TSU-1100 decoder in the tender.  Fortunately, the tender had come with a speaker installed, and it was designed for use with a Soundtraxx decoder.

When the painting and lettering was done, I put the model together.  Normally, I'd put the 'BVLC' lettering on the tender itself, with just the number on the locomotive.  However, as this was a tank engine before being converted, I figured that most of the lettering would be on the locomotive.

I did have the pilot truck from the original Backwoods Miniatures kit, however I'd always felt that it was a bit light.  Its frame was just etched brass, with no real weight to it.  My plan was to use the trailing truck I had leftover from the 2-4-4-2 conversion as the pilot.  However, when attempting to bend the mounting point to adjust it, it broke.  A search through the graveyard produced another pilot truck, originally from the Roundhouse 2-8-0.  This had a bit of weight over the axle, and was flexible enough to be adjusted without breaking.  After trimming it to length and drilling a new mounting hole, I swapped the original axle with the axle from the 2-4-4-2 trailing truck.  I prefer to have spoked wheels on my pilots.

With that sorted out, I put the model together, testing the mechanism to ensure it ran smoothly.  Once I'd finished that and programmed it, I added a firebox to the cab using a brass casting and some 0.25mm styrene.  I also re-used the floor flap (between cab and tender) from the 2-4-4-2, with a mount made out of 0.5mm copper wire.  After adding a wood load to the tender, the model was complete.
