ONE MAGICAL TRIP
So let’s go!
GOOD WAY TO GET EXPLORING
Tumblr media Tumblr media
TAKE MORE MEMORIES
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A journey of a Thousand Miles
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Maraming turista at namamasyal dito.

Tourists prefer to visit open areas during pandemic: Puyat
#PHnews: Tourists prefer to visit open areas during pandemic: Puyat
BAGAC, Bataan – More tourists prefer to visit tourist spots with open spaces and those with safety and health protocols in place during the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic, the Department of Tourism (DOT) said Wednesday.
“We made a survey and 77 percent want to travel even without the Covid-19 vaccine yet but they want to go in areas with open air in small groups and with known health and safety protocols,” DOT Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat said during a media interview.
She said Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar, a well-known theme park here, is an example of destinations preferred by more people.
Puyat said she has sought the permission of Las Casas owner Jerry Acuzar and Bataan Governor Albert Garcia for its inclusion in a book being prepared by DOT.
“Hindi lang open air ang hanap ng mga tao, ang gusto nila ay pwedeng puntahan by land at iikot muna within the municipality. Basta anything by land ang gusto nilang puntahan (People are not just looking for open air, they want to be able to go by land and go around within the municipality. They want to go to places they can reach by land travel),” she said.
Puyat observed that people are getting tired of staying indoors because of the community quarantine and now want to go out to see new sceneries.
“Pagod na pagod na ang mga tao sa bahay. Naghahanap na sila ng ibang tanawin kaya we are hoping na aside from Lasa Casas Filipinas de Acuzar and Mt. Samat ay may mapuntahan pang iba (People are very tired of staying at home. They are looking for another scenery, so we are hoping that aside from Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar and Mt. Samat, there are other places to go to,” she said.
Mt. Samat in Pilar town is the site of the Shrine of Valor built in remembrance of the bravery of Filipino and American soldiers during World War II.
Puyat said there are a few other tourist spots that have reopened in this province but she hoped that more will resume operation.
“But of course, we have to work with Governor Albert Garcia kasi syempre mas alam niya ang cases sa Bataan (because, of course, he knows the cases in Bataan),” the DOT chief said.
“Dito sa Bataan, we will ensure that we will enforce the same health and safety protocols kasi alam ko maraming nangangamba pa. Maraming local government units ayaw pang magbukas ng resorts. Kinakabahan baka daw makapagdala pa ng Covid-19 (I know many are still worried. Many local government units [LGUs] do not want to open resorts. They are concerned that this might bring Covid-19),” she said.
Puyat said she took a reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test before going to this town.
“So, 48 hours hindi pwedeng magpunta dito kung hindi negative ang test (cannot go here if the test is not negative),” she said.
The Tourism chief noted that about 4.7 million people in the industry have been affected by the pandemic.
“We want tourism back slowly but surely para makatrabaho na mga tao (so that people could work) but with the consent of the LGUs,” Puyat said.
“Dapat ay makipag-ugnayan sa LGU, sa governor, sa mayor dahil sila ang mag-i-implement. Hindi namin pinipilit ang governor o mayor kasi alam nila ang cases sa lugar nila. Ang ginagawa lang namin ay kinakausap ang mayor kung ano ba ang kailangan nila para magbukas (There must be coordination with the LGU, governor, mayor because they are the ones that will implement. We are not forcing the governor or mayor because they know the cases in their areas. All we do is talk to the mayor about what they need to open),” she said.
She said she respected the LGUs that are strict in implementing health protocols like Garcia and Bagac Mayor Ramil del Rosario who are making sure that reopening of tourism will not cause a spread of Covid19.
Puyat said she has long planned to visit the Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar. “It is so beautiful!” she exclaimed.
She was welcomed by Acuzar and some provincial officials led by Dinalupihan Mayor Maria Angela Garcia, president of the Bataan League of Municipalities.
The governor said via Zoom that the Provincial Tourism Office was coordinating with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to avail of a zero-interest loan that owners of tourist sites in the province could use to reopen their business.
Garcia thanked Puyat for helping Bataan in its tourism programs.
He said they are strict and extra careful in reopening tourist sites in the province “to protect our citizens from the threat of Covid-19”.
“Ang ibang resorts ay hindi pa talaga nagbubukas dahil delikado pa ang sitwasyon pero ang iba naman ay (Some resorts have not really opened yet because the situation is still dangerous but others are) in the process of completing their requirements),” the governor said.
Del Rosario said they have to be strict in the implementation of safety protocols for the sake of their residents. (PNA)

Relocation as a form of preservation negatively affects the Filipino Bahay na Bato
(ESSAY)
by Rozheanne Hilario (BA Philippine Arts, 2014-20355)
INTRODUCTION
Philippine Architecture represents its own development and other factors that influenced and enriched it. According to Arch, Manuel Noche of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), Philippine Architecture has undergone a lot of changes as time went by and it mirrors the needs and trends in society. These changes were brought about by foreign visitors and colonizers that influenced Philippine culture, including architecture. Some of these are architectural heritage that served as home to significant people, churches, and establishments that were built for the society’s needs. As a result of these many changes, Philippines was considered an architectural melting pot because it has its own unique style with a hint of western design. (Noche, 2015)
The Bahay na Bato is a part of the history of Philippine Architecture. It has been an architectural influence brought by the Spanish colonizers and it played a huge role in the culture of the Filipinos. This architectural style of a house was prominent in the 19th century, and during the current period, some of these houses are being preserved in various methods. Numerous houses with bahay na bato style around the country are being bought by tycoon Jose Rizalino “Jerry” Acuzar and transferred to his heritage resort in Bagac, Bataan to become prestigious hotels and other accommodations. This resort is named Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar. This study will prove that the relocation being done by the Acuzars bring negative effects to the structures’ architecture, history, and culture.
The Bahay na Bato is a colonial Filipino house that followed the nipa hut's arrangements such as open ventilation and elevated apartments. The most obvious difference between the two houses would be the materials used to build them. The bahay na bato was constructed out of brick and stone rather than the traditional bamboo materials. It is a mixture of native Filipino, Spanish and Chinese influences. Usually, these are made with solid stone foundations or brick lower walls, and overhanging, wooden upper story with balustrades and capiz shell sliding windows, and a tiled roof. (De Luna, n.d.)
In different parts of the country, there are numerous provinces and towns where these types of structures can be found. Some of them have been tourist spots, some have undergone adaptive reuse or has been used for a different purpose, and some are still being occupied by residents. Some of the provinces that have a community of the Bahay na Bato are Ilocos Region, Laguna, Batangas, Panay, Cebu, Bohol, and many more around the country. (Noche, 2015)
In the Philippines, structures like these are usually given importance not only because of its aesthetic significance, but also because of other deeper reasons-- they may have been home to different significant personalities and events in history. According to the Historic Preservation Division (HPD) of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), this division aims to develop and enrich Philippine Heritage through preservation, protection, and development of historical sites, structures, and materials. It’s also a part of the HPD’s responsibility to educate, disseminate information, and encourage people to give importance to historical sites and structures, as well. It is expected to use the appropriate and updated means to preserve and protect the materials and structures that are considered a part of Philippine Heritage. (National Historical Commission of the Philippines, n.d.)
Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar is found in a 400-hectare land in front of the Bagac Lake in Bataan. It is a community of ancestral and heritage structures. In 2003, Jose Rizalino “Jerry” Acuzar, a self-made tycoon, had the community built. As he was traveling abroad, he visited heritage sites and that’s when he decided he wanted to build a resort beside the sea that would exhibit antique bahay na bato that were left to rot and became home to informal settlers.  (Tugade, 2016)
These houses date back 18th and 19th century. They came from the different parts of the country. Some of them were uprooted from their original locations, while some were dismembered to be rebuilt as replicas. Most of the houses had a rich history. Because of this, it was considered the largest living museum of Philippine Heritage. The resort may appear colonial or traditional, but it actually provides services for the modern world like hotels, leisure, resting, and entertainment  areas, and other accommodations. (Las Casas Filipinas, n.d.)
The houses the Acuzars took were from Tondo, Binondo, Quiapo, Maynila, Quezon, Pampanga, La Union, Ilocos, and Cagayan. There may have been a lot of heritage houses in Vigan, but they were not able to obtain houses from there.. (Guerrero, 2010)
To point out, the resort is not a property of the government. As a visitor enters, there is a fee of Php 750.00 and it excludes the daytour fee. This tour costs at least Php 1,500.00. (Guerrero, 2010). This paper will prove that the intention and methods used in preserving the houses transferred in Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar brought negative effects to the structures called Bahay na Bato.
 DEFINITION OF TERMS
Bahay na bato - The colonial Filipino house, followed the nipa hut's arrangements such as open ventilation and elevated apartments. The most obvious difference between the two houses would be the materials used to build them. The bahay na bato was constructed out of brick and stone rather than the traditional bamboo materials. It is a mixture of native Filipino, Spanish and Chinese influences. Usually, these are made with solid stone foundations or brick lower walls, and overhanging, wooden upper story with balustrades and kapis shell sliding windows, and a tiled roof. (De Luna, n.d.)
Preservation - Historic preservation seeks to find effective and artful ways to maintain and reuse significant buildings, landscapes, and communities. Central to the discipline is the attempt to preserve cultural identity in the face of the threats of urban sprawl and loss of social diversity. (Texas Architecture, n.d.)
Types of Preservation:
Renovation simply means to make an object look like new. The object to be renovated is just a base or starting point for the client/designer’s imagination. The object, materials and method of construction, historical importance, or place in time are not critical. The object itself does not place restrictions on the work to be done. (Bjorneberg, n.d.)
Preservation involves keeping an object from destruction and seeing to it that the object is not irredeemably altered or changed. The word preservation is most commonly used in relation to architecture and built environments. (Bjorneberg, n.d.)
Conservation -  the absolute maximum amount of the original material, in as unaltered a condition as possible, is preserved. Any repairs or additions must not remove, alter or permanently bond/cross-link to any original material. All repairs or additions must be reversible and removable without affecting the condition of the original material now, and in the future. (Bjorneberg, n.d.)
Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar - a heritage resort in Bagac, Bataan, owned by tycoon Jose Rizalino “Jerry” Acuzar. Heritage structures are being uprooted from their original locations and transferred in this heritage resort. They are being rebuilt to become prestigious hotels and other accommodations. (Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar, n.d.)
 HYPOTHESES
1. Is relocation a necessary tool in the preservation of structures?
2. Does the relocation affect the different aspects of the structures such as architecture, history, and culture?
3. Is the method used by the Acuzars a safe and effective way of preserving the structures with authenticity?
4. Do the Acuzars prioritize the well-being of the structures, or is profit the primary goal?
5. Are the houses still 100% authentic after the relocation?
 SUBTHESIS STATEMENTS
1. Relocation is not a necessary tool in preservation of structures
1.1 There are negative effects of using relocation in preservation
1.1.1  According to Aspen Historic Preservation Design Guidelines, buildings that are a part of or contributes to the culture, history, and society of a place, country, town, or district should not be removed from its original location because it contributes to the character of the place. The significance of a building and the character of its setting are to be analyzed, because in relocating structures like these, it is necessary to be sensitive when it comes to culture and history. These structures are representative of development, and other events in history that are relevant to society and other structures in the area. (City of Aspen Historic Preservation Design Guidelines, n.d.)
II. The relocation affects the different aspects of the structure
1.1 The architecture of the structures are changed because of material use.
First, it was detrimental to the structures’ architecture because of the mode of transporting the parts of the houses in great distance. The houses also had to face a different climate and environment that will affect the their chemical factors. According to World Heritage Operational Guidelines’ definition of authenticity, a property is considered authentic if their cultural values are credibly expressed through material and substance, form and design, use and function, technology and technique, location and setting, visual integrity, management and governance, language and expression, intangible association, and spirit and feeling of the place (Bulaong, 2017). Based on this criteria, the authenticity of the houses had already decreased because of the factors material and substance, and location and setting. Thus, the houses are not 100% authentic anymore.
1.2 The history of the structures are affected because location plays a huge part in their history
Taking away a built heritage from a community for it to be relocated to another is a huge loss to the original community’s culture and history.
1.3 The overall culture of a place will be affected if a structure is uprooted from it.
The overall culture of a country, province, and town, include the characteristics and knowledge of a particular group of people, encompassing language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music and arts (Zimmermann, 2017). This means it includes the architecture, society, and history. The details presented above have proven that the relocation of the houses have been detrimental to the culture of the places where they were originally located.
III. The Acuzars prioritize culture capitalism and profit in making these structures prestigious accommodations.
1.1 The entrance fee and accommodations are more expensive than usual
Pierre Bourdieu’s Culture Capitalism can be used to analyze this aspect. Bourdieu’s theory suggests that people who like or patronize the same things or interests, which he calls cultural capital, belong to the same collective identity and social status. He also suggests that the concept of cultural capital is one of the main causes of social inequality. (Cultural Capital, n.d.) Because Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar is considered a large museum of culture, it may be considered a part of high culture, which isolates the pieces of architecture from the reach of the masses. (Cultural Capital, n.d.). It becomes accessible only to the people who can afford to pay more than Php 750.00 to come inside the resort. This negatively affects the houses because their significances and histories are kept inside a museum that are only accessible to certain types of people. These houses are parts of the culture and history of places other than Bagac, Bataan. They are being taken away from their original homes.
