Study for "Baigneuses" by William Adolphe Bouguereau (1825 - 1905)
William-Adolphe Bouguereau was an example of academic painter. This entailed, on the one hand, a conservative attitude towards art, and on the other, success among the French bourgeoisie of the time on the one hand, and on the other, success among the French bourgeoisie of the time.
His style is naturalistic, self-indulgent, almost onanistic. Bouguereau continually demonstrates his evident mastery of academicist pictorial techniques (and also of the social keys of bourgeois hypocrisy). Bouguereau paints what the bourgeois wants to look at: naked women (sometimes also men), who, disguised as mythological scenes, raise both intelligence and libido.
