The Bathers - Dreamless (1999)
After his group Friends Again broke up, Scottish singer Chris Thomson formed the Bathers. While Friends Again were exuberant, jangly pop, the Bathers were (are?) melancholy and dramatic.

12/1/23.
One of my favorite bands over the past year or so has been Maxwell Farrington & Le SuperHomard. The vocals, the songs, and the arrangements are all mesmerizing. This is music I find myself dropping everything to listen to. In other words, it demands my full attention. In my book, this music is right up there with The Divine Comedy.
So, I'm pretty jazzed with the announcement of a new album due in February (courtesy of Talitres. I know Le SuperHomard is French and Farrington is Australian. I'm not sure if they both live in France, but I'm not sure it matters much.
If you enjoy crooner/baroque pop, then give The Bathers a listen too. I think they're from Glasgow ("Sirenesque" was released on Last Night From Glasgow).

I got to see The Bathers live last night and it made my soul bigger.
I saw Chris Thomson solo at a pub in Edinburgh years ago, he played a few Bathers songs but last night was a whole other level.
I initially heard Kelvingrove Baby on a mix tape a friend gave me around 2010. But the mix tape had been given to THEM by someone else and they also had no info about the group, other than their name.
I couldn't find much about them online, except for a postage stamp sized video of them performing The Angel on Ruskin - apparently the sound guy was at the bottom of a nearby well at the time of recording.
Eventually (like, 2 years later?) I put Kelvingrove Baby on one night for my bestie who immediately went "wait this reminds me of a band I know. Is this...The Bathers?!"
SHE HAD SWEET DECEIT ON CASSETTE THIS WHOLE TIME. I got to listen to an entire album! Soon after I found a CD of Kelvingrove Baby (the album) and went to the gig in Edinburgh. They started showing up more online and I heard a bunch more of their music gradually over time, nowadays they're fully active again (see - the picture at the top of this post haha) and releasing a new album (which is SO GOOD. SO FUCKING GOOD) but honestly, finding them how I did, the drip feed of beautiful sounds I could never quite get enough of, really solidified my love for them.
Something something music being so easy to access these days is a double edged sword. Whatever. I had a great time last night. This band is so important to me. Love them.
