in which matsuno chifuyu is head over heels for his captain and doesn't know that baji keisuke knows.

The realization came so agonizingly slow. Baji felt as if he was watching a baby slowly blink before the tears gathered in their eyes and they started wailing so loudly—but like, in slow motion, making everything even worse.

Baji had seen it all play out.

They were just chilling around, scrolling through their phones while hanging out in a nearby cafe just a few minutes away from their apartment complex, doing such mundane things. Then, from the corner of his eyes, Baji saw Chifuyu suddenly look up at him, blinking slowly and the gears in his head turning before a look of horror grew on his face and red tints his cheeks.

Baji knew what was in his mind at that very moment.

But he can’t help but bite on his lip to keep himself from groaning because really?? Did Chifuyu just realize it??

Chifuyu had been eyeing him differently for a while now, preening with pride whenever Baji acknowledged him, and always not-so-subtly glancing at Baji when he’s done something and secretly wants Baji’s opinion or phrase. And honestly? It’s so fucking adorable.

Problem is, Chifuyu doesn’t even realize what he’s doing. All these little things. These obvious telltale signs that Chifuyu doesn’t exactly see Baji as just a friend, signs that everyone has seen. Chifuyu has no absolute clue that he was doing it.

Baji just wants to mourn. Maybe he should have confessed like what Draken said. But then again, Kazutora said that Chifuyu might have rejected him because he hadn’t come to terms with his feelings yet and maybe it was better for Chifuyu to approach him since…

Well, the kid is a little recluse unless some perfect circumstances come up and he’s presented with great people he can be friends with. Chifuyu, after all, was quite a lonely kid, to the point that he decided to act out and be a delinquent because of his boredom and growing arrogance.

Baji was sure that if he hadn’t met him and invited Chifuyu to be his friend, the boy would still be doing stupid things, looking so stupid, and being so terribly alone with only people following him because they like sucking up to people greater than them.

And Chifuyu would eat it up because he didn’t know any better. The thought makes Baji seethe.

He groans instead, slamming his face on his desk in his room, ready to just off himself. Chifuyu realized his own feelings just recently and has been avoiding Baji like a plague which hurts like hell and Baji is dying and Mikey is only laughing at him because he’s a brat.

Baji hadn’t seen Chifuyu for four days, it may seem like a short time to anyone else, but for Baji who spent almost every single moment with Chifuyu ever since they met, it’s physically painful and he would rather die than have this happen again.

(Mitsuya did say that he was a little dramatic…)

High school is less than bearable now because Chifuyu isn’t there to slam the door open during lunch so the three of them (including Takemichi, who Chifuyu greatly adores as if he’s his little brother) could have lunch together. Baji is briefly aware that Chifuyu picked Takemichi somewhere and just loved him and treasured him like how a similar brother would—dumb and dumber.

Lunch with Chifuyu and Takemichi was always peaceful, or as peaceful as it could get with Baji teasing Takemichi and Chifuyu having a hard time picking sides because it’s Baji-san and Takemichi!. Until Mikey catches whiff of Takemichi hanging out with them and barging in the conversation to go and coddle Takemichi like the biased bastard he is. Draken is always trailing behind Mikey to make sure that he won’t do something stupid and Mitsuya and the rest aren’t that far behind him.

Peaceful lunches turn into a full-on war.

It always ended that way with everyone yelling at the same time and Takemichi trying to hold Mikey back from pounding someone’s face in the wall, Draken on the brink of just jumping off the roof and ending it right then and there, and Chifuyu laughing by Baji’s side. Baji wouldn’t have it any other way.

Baji once more groans at the thought of lunch period. He hadn’t had lunch with Chifuyu for four days!! This is unfair! It’s treason! There has to be some kind of law against it.

Last he heard was that Chifuyu was going into an existential crisis with Takemichi, confiding in him. There was immediately a sour look on Baji's face. That was bound to not end well. Who the fuck decided that these two could be friends? Takemichi is utterly hopeless in people’s advances on him (ahem Hina, ahem Mikey, ahem basically everyone with a functional brain??). Why would Chifuyu even go to him??

These two were officially branded as oblivious and oblivious, dumb and dumber, and they aren’t supposed to be left alone unless you want Takemichi to almost get kidnapped or Chifuyu to burn something down in an attempt to help Takemichi but gets the wrong idea. They were dumb but they were also pretty, that makes things a whole lot more dangerous. Mitsuya was in charge of watching over them.

Baji just knows that he isn’t going to see Chifuyu anytime soon.

Why couldn't Chifuyu ask for help from someone else? He languishes, wishing that he would just get amnesia instead from banging his head on his desk.

So imagine his surprise when his phone chimed from a text from Chifuyu telling him to meet him at the roof.

He literally raced up there. Jacket barely worn and shoelaces untied with his hair a mess, calling over his shoulder to tell his mom that he’s just meeting up with Chifuyu upstairs and will be back soon.

The wind was cold when he slammed the door open, slapping him in the face with no remorse as his nose turned red immediately. Chifuyu lingers on the opposite side, leaning on the railing with the wind ruffling his hair. The boy was in casual clothes but Baji felt as if his breath was taken away from him, his heart beating too loud in his ears from just a mere sight of Chifuyu.

Damn, he really is whipped.

“Baji-san!”

Even with the low lighting, Baji could distinguish the pink on his cheeks, coloring it so beautifully as Chifuyu turns to see him only to glance away. Baji clears his throat, closing the door behind him and making his way to the boy that had made him feel this way for the past few years. “What did you need to tell me so bad that you asked me to come up and meet you nearing midnight?”

He knew that it wasn’t rare for them to hangout in these hours. Hell they hangout from day to night until the sun starts rising once more; sleep is almost impossible when they’re together as things to do and topics to talk about never seem to end—or perhaps sometimes, they’re just basking in each other’s presence, in each other’s warmth.

But Chifuyu only looks down, clenching and unclenching the hem of his shirt. The hem of Baji’s shirt that Chifuyu once borrowed and never returned. It was bigger on him by a size or two but Chifuyu seemed very comfortable in it and Baji never did quite mind.

Perhaps Baji is starting to understand why Mikey acted the way he did when Baji stupidly decided to tell him his dilemma.

(There was an incredulous look on Mikey’s face, just staring at Baji as if he was stupid—which he does with everyone, even his own brother, so Baji doesn’t quite mind. A passing Izana stopped and gave him the same look, this time, Baji does mind.

“Are you seriously telling me,” Mikey starts, talking so slowly as if Baji was a child. “-that you and Chifuyu aren’t dating yet and you noticed him showing signs of liking you buy you also found out that he just realized he liked you and now Chifuyu is avoiding you and hanging out with Takemicchi instead?”

“Yeah.”

Mikey gives him the same look. No more words were exchanged. But Izana did laugh and Baji must have heard it wrong but he was sure that the boy told Shinichiro about it as well.)

Baji is patient as Chifuyu gathers his words, trying to remember how to speak. His head is probably muddled up now but Baji doesn’t quite care, he’s in the same state after all.

“Baji-san…” Chifuyu looks up in determination and Baji thinks, welp, this is it. “I… I really really like you. Not as a friend kind of way, but I like you in the way that I want to hold your hand, that I want to go out on dates with you, that I want to be by your side all the time. And...” He falters. “If it’s alright with you, please go out with me.”

Baji hesitates. Fuck, fuck what is he supposed to do?! He expected Chifuyu to just tell him “I like you” and be done with it, he didn’t expect for him to actually speak more than three simple words and make things so complicated. Now, Baji can’t even think! “Uhh, yeah…” He dumbly says.

Chifuyu’s face falls immediately. “If you don’t want to see me anymore, it’s okay, I swear I understand-”

“NO! No! That’s not it,” he stammers, trying to think of something, anything, to make this situation a whole lot better. “It’s just that…”

“Baji-san?”

“I kind of... knew it from the start. Everyone did?? Except Takemichi because the two of you are on the same level of obliviousness.”

“Oh.”

“Yeah, oh.”

A few beats of silence passed.

“Do you want to go out with me though?”

“Hell yeah I do.”

Takemichi once said communication is the key. No one quite believed him. But when Baji is kissing Chifuyu and Chifuyu is kissing back, Baji thinks why didn’t he tell Chifuyu any sooner?
