The whole team needed it says Leclerc after taking first pole of 2023
Charles Leclerc took his and Ferrari's first pole position of 2023 with a blistering effort around Baku which will see him start first for Sunday's Azerbaijan Grand Prix – and he said Friday evening's result came as a relief. Leclerc took his 19th career pole position, and his first since Singapore 2022, by beating Red Bull's Max Verstappen in a Friday qualifying session that set the grid for Sunday's Azerbaijan Grand Prix. READ MORE: Leclerc beats Verstappen in qualifying thriller for third straight Azerbaijan GP pole After rumours linking him with Mercedes, plus the announcement that Ferrari's Sporting Director Laurent Mekies will leave Ferrari to lead AlphaTauri when current boss Franz Tost departs, Leclerc was relieved to take pole. "It feels good for, I think the whole team needed it," he said, "because we arrive here where… it’s a part of our job I think any teams in Formula 1, you need to deal with rumours, pressure, and it’s obviously a bit more difficult to perform under those circumstances and we did really well, so I think it’s good for the whole team." This feature is currently not available because you need to provide consent to functional cookies. Please update your cookie preferences 2023 Azerbaijan GP Qualifying: Charles Leclerc crosses the line to seal pole position in Baku The Monegasque driver has endured a winless start to 2023 as Red Bull swept the first three rounds, and Leclerc said he didn't expect to be fighting for pole in Azerbaijan. "[It feels] really good especially considering the beginning of season I’ve had. Obviously we haven’t had the greatest of beginnings but it’s great to be back on pole. "I didn’t expect it and I think we came into the weekend thinking it would already be a great result if we were in front of the Astons and Mercedes and now we find ourselves on pole. HIGHLIGHTS: Watch the action from a thrilling qualifying in Baku as Leclerc stuns Red Bull to take pole "Really really happy with that, but we need to see obviously tomorrow with the Sprint race and for Sunday’s race, and I think we are a little bit more on the back foot there – but anyway, it’s a really good surprise and extremely happy with my lap," he said. Ferrari entered Baku fourth in the constructors' standings but there are plenty of points on offer as the first Sprint – plus the first-ever Sprint Shootout – take place on Saturday. This feature is currently not available because you need to provide consent to functional cookies. Please update your cookie preferences 2023 Azerbaijan GP FP1: Sainz clips the wall in first practice session in Baku Having qualified fourth, Leclerc's team mate Carlos Sainz said he was "lacking in confidence" throughout Friday. He explained: "Since FP1 I wasn't feeling quite at home with the car; the car looked very quick but for some reason I couldn't get my feeling and couldn't get my groove with the car today and, obviously with a lack of practice, I couldn't catch up on it and from the beginning of Q1 I was just lacking in confidence, lacking in rhythm..." WATCH: Nyck de Vries and Pierre Gasly crash out of Azerbaijan Grand Prix qualifying The Spaniard added that he used two sets of soft tyres in Q1, which prevented him from having an extra set of softs in Q3, and he seemed to lament the fact that parc ferme restrictions mean the car's set-up will essentially be unchanged for the rest of the weekend. Yet, Sainz said qualifying P4 was still a decent result. "I guess we have some work overnight to see what we can do with the car," he concluded. "We've got to gain the confidence back and try and get some feeling back with the car. We will play around with things but we are quite limited… the best of today's actually being P4 given I felt really far away from where I want to be." via Formula 1 News https://www.formula1.com

What to expect from the Austrian Grand Prix?
The Austrian Grand Prix is one of the most scenic and challenging races on the calendar. The Red Bull Ring is a short but fast circuit, with only 10 corners and four long straights. The track is located in the Styrian Alps, which means it has a lot of elevation changes and unpredictable weather conditions.
The race is also a home event for Red Bull Racing, who have dominated the season so far with eight wins out of eight races. Max Verstappen leads the drivers’ championship by a comfortable margin over his teammate Sergio Perez, who has won two races this year. The Dutch star has also won the Austrian Grand Prix three times before, in 2018, 2019 and 2022.
However, Red Bull will not have an easy ride in Austria. Their rivals Mercedes, Aston Martin, Ferrari and Alpine will be eager to challenge them and end their winning streak. Mercedes have won four times in Austria since 2014, with Lewis Hamilton taking three victories and Valtteri Bottas one. Aston Martin have shown strong pace in recent races, with Sebastian Vettel finishing second in Baku and fourth in Monaco. Ferrari have also improved their performance this year, with Charles Leclerc taking two pole positions and Carlos Sainz scoring two podiums5. Alpine have also scored points in every race so far, with Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon showing consistent form.
The Austrian Grand Prix will also feature the second Sprint weekend of the season, which means that qualifying will take place on Friday instead of Saturday, and a short sprint race will determine the grid for Sunday’s main race. This adds an extra element of excitement and unpredictability to the weekend.
So don’t miss out on this amazing opportunity to watch the Austrian Grand Prix live with F1 TV Pro! Subscribe now and enjoy the best Formula 1 coverage available!

Azerbaijan Grand Prix - Race Report
Hello again, everyone. We are together again in the aftermath of an Azerbaijan Grand Prix, through which we have been shocked & complained about the unnecessary changes to the formats and the regulations. As you already know, the FIA introduced the ''Sprint'' format in 2021 and spread it across the calendar in 2022. In addition, they made more changes to the structure for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, which was to host one of the Sprint weekends of the 2023 calendar. For the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, which they ran on the Baku Street Circuit, they held a regular 3-step Qualifying session on Friday, and the drivers started the race on Sunday according to the results of this session. However, on Saturday, they held another 3-step Qualifying, called the ''Sprint Shootout,'' and a 17-lap Sprint Race to which the drivers started according to the results of the ''Shootout''. The top 8 claimed championship points, but the results of the Sprint Race did not affect the main event. Anyways, let's leave this here. After all, this is not a complaint report. Now, let's look at what happened during the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, which was promising for some but an absolute frustration & nightmare for others.
A Weekend From Hell For The Rookies!
Unfortunately, the weekend in Azerbaijan became an absolute nightmare for our rookies. Misfortunes did not leave the kids, not for the qualifying, the sprint shootout, the sprint, or the race. Additionally, they had recently renewed the tarmac, which meant it was extra slippery, so they gathered the young drivers from the walls of Baku all weekend long. First, Logan Sargeant, who delivered a result that we consider significant, lost his chances of reaching Q3 by just a couple of tenths of a second. Then, however, a crash saw him out of the ''Sprint Shootout''. Because he could not have a timed lap, he also had to sit the Sprint race out. Starting the primary race from 15th place, Sargeant chased Zhou Guanyu lap after lap after lap but could not get through. Finally, after having to defend his spot for a long while after Zhou's DNF due to mechanical issues, he surrendered to Pierre Gasly, who had been chasing him very closely.
On the other hand, our other rookie, Nyck De Vries, truly experienced hell on Earth. Unfortunately, we gathered the Dutch rookie, who stopped the session by causing a red flag during qualifying, from the walls all weekend round. I want to emphasize that seeing him like this is heartbreaking because I love him dearly. But of course, I will not stop supporting him because this does not represent his true potential. The only driver among our rookies who did not live an absolute nightmare in Baku was McLaren's young star, Oscar Piastri. Piastri showed himself with his qualifying and sprint performances and the primary race. But he missed out on the last point and the 10th place by just a couple of tenths of a second. Nevertheless, we still congratulate him and hope for the continuation of his success.
Perez Is Flying, Again!
Of course, when we say Perez, everyone thinks of Baku. His weekend performance was not surprising because his performances on street circuits are always impressive, and he even received the nickname ''King Of The Streets'' among the fans. No one can dare deny that he showed an outstanding and superior performance throughout every session, including free practice and qualifying sessions. With this performance, not only did he claim the race win, but also he brought his team the 4th victory in 4 races. He also took the challenge to his teammate Max Verstappen, who is equally impressive on street circuits (even though he could not win this round). I am sure you will get mad at me, maybe even attack me, for saying this. But, contrary to the ''general census'', I do not think that Perez is ''better than'' Max Verstappen on street circuits. Yes, Perez is a great driver, and I do not deny that he performs incredibly well on street circuits. I can never deny that. But I also do not deny Max's exceptional drives on street circuits, constantly pushing the limits as if he is on a standard race track. Now that I stated that, I congratulate Perez for his fantastic drive and the win. I will continue supporting him.
A Lesson On Team Work From Aston Martin!
I want to mention the Aston Martin drivers again this week, especially. This week, they did something that brought tears to my eyes. First, let’s talk about the team's youngster, Lance Stroll. He usually receives criticism from everyone, even insults (and I'm afraid that's not right). But that kid, not only did he surprise me, he almost made me cry (happy tears). It was as if he was trying to re-prove himself with his impressive and nearly flawless drive in Baku. On top of his performance, he also went on the radio to say, "Fernando, I will not attack you; we are playing the same game,” to let him know that he would play fair. I can never forget the moment I heard that. I had tears in my eyes. Of course, the veteran Spaniard did not wait long to return the favor and make the absolute “big brother” move for young Lance. Nando also went on the radio and said, “Give Lance my brake settings; it seems to work well for now.” I can never forget this one, either. Honestly, both of them made me quite emotional. Aston Martin drivers taught the entire grid how to be a team with their moves. I extend my sincere hugs to both drivers and hope that they never lose this team spirit.
Is Ferrari Charging For Real?
On the Ferrari side, both the team and the supporters have experienced frustration after frustration. But it was as if the team came alive in Baku, despite making a miserable start to the season. Charles Leclerc was flying throughout the weekend. He had the pole position in the Qualifying session, and he went up to the podium for both the Sprint and the primary race. The young Monegasque made everyone think, “Updates must have worked well for Ferrari." Still, it's better to be realistic, even though it's sad. Sure, the car was much better compared to the previous races, and it was a perfect fit for the track. But the results came from Charles' hands. It would be unfair to deny his talent & skills. It still seems like there is a glimmer of hope for Ferrari. Sainz's results were not bad at all, either. We congratulate both drivers and extend our support.
FIA's Safety Flaws Are Never Ending!
We got sick and tired of trying to explain but trust us, the FIA did not get tired of ignoring safety measures. Without further redo, let me quickly explain what happened. As you also know, according to sporting regulations, every driver MUST have at least one pit stop during a race. However, when they come in for a pit stop is entirely up to the teams and their strategy crews. Alpine, taking full advantage of this situation, kept their young star, Esteban Ocon, on the track until the very last lap of the race. And to avoid possible penalties, they called him in for his mandatory pit stop right before the final lap had started. But the young Frenchman, and also us spectators, were shocked and even dumbfounded by what we saw the moment he entered the pit lane. The scene was HORRIFYING: press personnel, journalists, and photographers running around with cameras and a car that had just entered the pit lane! Later we found out that according to the regulations, the moment the race leader starts the final lap, photographers and press personnel are allowed into the pit lane to take pictures of the finish line. Rightfully so, the French driver was shocked by what he saw and went full force on the brakes. I just told you what happened, and I leave the judgment to the CONSCIENCE of all the racing fans. Because it seems the top people of the FIA do not have even a tiny glimpse of conscience.
Now, we will discuss the results: the flying Mexican, Sergio Perez, drove to victory in Baku. His teammate, Max Verstappen, saw the chequered flag in 2nd place, right behind him. With the Dutch champion’s 2nd place, Red Bull received their 4th 1-2 finish of the 2023 season, to which they have already made an impressive start. And on the 3rd step of the podium was Ferrari’s young star, Charles Leclerc, who was outstanding all weekend round.
That’s all for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. See you in Miami, everyone. Until then, much love :)))

Austin to be one of six F1 sprint races in 2023
Austin to be one of six F1 sprint races in 2023
Austin’s U.S. Grand Prix will be one of six Formula One races held under the sprint weekend format in 2023. Austin, Baku, Spa and Qatar will all host their first sprint in 2023, with Austria and Brazil retaining the format for another season. In 2021 and 2022 F1 had three events which ran differently to the rest, with qualifying shifted to Friday, setting the grid for a shortened sprint race on…

making the best of a bad situation: making sense of why ferrari decided to take the engine penalties for charles
a lot of crying is going on over the penalties, but actually a lot of analysts I trust with ferrari are saying it is a strategic decision, and even one they agree with. I’m here to make sense of it all.
Tumblr media
Let’s start with the basics.
What is a Power Unit (PU)?
The power unit consist of six separate elements: the internal combustion engine (ICE), the motor generator unit-kinetic (MGU-K), the motor generator unit-heat (MGU-H), turbocharger (TC), the energy store (ES), and control electronics (CE).
Each component has a maximum allocation over the season. For 2022: 3 ICEs, 3 MGU-Hs, 3 MGU-Ks, 3 TCs, 2 ESs, and 2 CEs.
What is going on?
On Friday:
Ferrari fitted a new ICE, MGU-K, MGU-H, and CE on Charles’ car. This is what we are calling PU3.
Because the CE is the 3rd one out of 2 allowed, Charles is confirmed by Ferrari to have to take a 10 place grid penalty. The rest of the new PU components fitted are within allocation.
On Saturday:
Charles is expected to take a new PU (PU4) around FP3. Among these components would include the 4th Turbo Charger (TC4), ICE, MGU-K, and MGU-H.
On Sunday:
Charles starts with at least a 10 place grid penalty (confirmed so far). If he does get new components/a new PU as multiple journalists and AMuS are predicting, he will start from the back of the grid.
What does this mean?
It means that from this race going forwards, Charles would have three power units in his pool: PU1, PU3 (without turbo), and PU4 (with new turbo).
This should cover him for at least the next 5 races. If after, you want/need to get a new turbo, you would pay only 5 positions. In the meantime, we wait for PU5 with the updated hybrid.
Keep in mind that this doesn’t mean there won’t be reliability upgrades during the wait for PU5—reliability upgrades are not penalized.
Is this even legal?
Yes. Here is the direct wording from the FIA:
Tumblr media
This is why he can take 2 ICEs this weekend because one of them is within allocation (3/3). He is not allowed to take two turbos because a new one would already be penalized. (You can’t take 2 penalized components in one weekend.)
Going forward, Charles would not be able to stack the same new PU components like this on a single weekend because these components are outside of the allocation allowed and have already been penalized.
Is there past precedence?
Yes, Ferrari did something similar with Sebastian Vettel at Malaysia, 2017. They mounted a 4th ICE (not penalized at the time) and then the 5th.
Making sense of Ferrari’s rationale (and why a lot of analysts are calling it a strategic/smart decision)
PU2’s failure in Barcelona and then Baku makes it inevitable that you, at the very least, need to take a new turbo charge (a 10 place grid penalty). Needing a 4th PU was already expected, but PU2’s early exit from Charles’ pool of engines basically threw all of your plans into the dumpster and lit it on fire.
If you were going to take an inevitable 10 place grid penalty for TC4, perhaps the smartest decision you can make is to take your penalties altogether. Every component after would only cost 5 places instead of 10. Montreal is not a bad place to do this because it is a track that is known to be pretty good for overtaking.
Not only that, you’re looking at a race weekend with very changeable weather conditions: a wet qualifying and a dry race. It’s not guaranteed that you are stronger than Red Bull in these conditions, this weekend.
But taking all the penalties at once means Charles will be able to take it easy during qualifying. You can set up his car for a dry race almost exclusively rather than trying to make a compromise to qualify well in the wets. Friday’s free practices certainly suggest that their focus for Charles is on the race pace—to make up these places.
It’s a bit of a shit situation after the last 3 races, particularly with the engine failures, which still need to be addressed in the medium and long term. But the sacrifice here means that you can still give yourself as much of a fighting chance as possible by making sure you have more options in the short term and 2 fresh PUs in the pool to handle the next few power-heavy tracks.
In their discussions, Ferrari had never considered running the old components rather trying to exploit the penalties in some way, according to Giuliano Duchessa. You have to make the best of a bad situation. You have to make your own luck even—or especially—when everything seems against you. When the best laid plans go up in smoke, the next best thing you can do is be opportunistic.

Haas chief Steiner targeting points in every race for the remainder of 2023
Haas Team Principal Guenther Steiner is targeting points in every race for the remainder of 2023 as the team gears up for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix this weekend. The squad head to Baku in seventh place in the constructors’ championship, with seven points, thanks to successive points finishes in Saudi Arabia and Australia. Nico Hulkenberg’s P7 in Melbourne was particularly sweet as it secured Haas's best result since July 2022. Both Kevin Magnussen and Hulkenberg know their way around the Baku City Circuit, having been part of the inaugural race on the city’s streets in 2016 – and Haas are expecting progress both in the immediate future and going forward for the rest of the season. IT’S RACE WEEK: 5 storylines we’re excited about ahead of the 2023 Azerbaijan Grand Prix Team boss Steiner was particularly hopeful that the remaining races could bring more joy with a lofty target to score points in each one, even though the team hasn’t scored around the City of Winds since 2017. “It’s difficult to say because it’s not only our form,” Steiner said, responding to whether the team could break their Azerbaijan point-scoring drought. “I think our car isn’t perfect, but I don’t know where the rest of the cars are perfect this year. I let myself be surprised when we go out in first practice and see what we can do, but this year it could be possible that our car scores points in every race. That’s the aim anyway so let’s hope after 2017, 2023 is the year that we score points in Baku.” Haas will be hoping to score points at every single race throughout 2023 Ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix much of the focus is on the new Sprint format, approved on Tuesday, that will make its debut this weekend. The tweaks see the F1 Sprint effectively become a standalone feature on Saturdays, with the event bearing no impact on the Grand Prix grid itself. Fridays will now include an FP1 session and standard qualifying session to set the grid for Sunday’s Grand Prix, while Saturdays will include the continuing 100km dash with an additional, preceding qualifying session called the ‘Sprint Shootout’. EXPLAINED: Everything you need to know about the 2023 F1 Sprint format The tweaks will add an additional challenge for the drivers to get to grips with over a race weekend, and Steiner declared he was a fan of the revised method for the Sprint. “I definitely prefer the new set-up because Saturday morning practice is pretty pointless as you couldn’t change anything on the car,” he said. “You just went out there, did laps and tried to understand the tyres – I don’t think that’s very interesting for the fans. A second qualifying is a lot better for the fans, and also for us, as it gives you excitement. “We’ve got a lot of things going on at the weekend, two qualifying sessions and two races, and I think that’s great for the sport.” Guenther Steiner is a fan of the tweaks to the F1 Sprint, which will take place for the first time in its current guise in Baku For many of the teams across Formula 1, the spring break has allowed them to rest, reassess and try to make important gains ahead of the return of racing this weekend. With an intense period about to come – five race weekends in the space of six weeks - Haas themselves have done what they can with the pause to try and make progress. EXPLAINED: Everything you need to know about the 2023 F1 Sprint format “With the unintended break, we tried to make the best out of it,” Steiner added. “Firstly, I told people to rest a little bit and get ready for a tough season in front of us, as the real season starts now with the double-header and then the triple-header. “The design team is working on the last little bits for upgrades that we bring in the next races, starting in Miami. We also put a few things in place like the race team going to a team-bonding event for two days in Wales.” via Formula 1 News https://www.formula1.com

Bottas hopes for a "problem-free weekend" in Azerbaijan to unleash Alfa Romeo's "full potential."
Tumblr media
Bottas has a history of success in Baku, having won the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in 2019 and nearly beating Lance Stroll to second place in 2017 in a photo finish. However, the Finn lost the lead in 2018 after colliding with some debris.
Bottas stated he's hoping for a much smoother build-up to the 2022 Azerbaijan Grand Prix after a series of Friday practice hiccups this season in places like Imola and Spain.
Alfa Romeo has had a strong start to the 2022 season, scoring in all but one race, and currently sits fifth in the standings heading into the eighth round.
Given the growing anticipation for the event, SportsTiger has put together a package for all F1 News Latest for fans who want to stay up to date for all the F1 News Latest on all of the action throughout F1 2022.

Mexico City Grand Prix Review
It was all about Lap 1 of the Grand Prix really, as it was so hard to overtake after that, and the pendulum kept swinging in what has been an incredible season of F1!
In hindsight, Red Bull should have been pleased to lock out the 2nd row of the grid in qualifying, as if they had got pole, with their lack of straight line speed, they surely would have been swamped down to Turn 1. Instead, though, it was Max who got the perfect slipstream, and out braked the Mercedes to get the lead. From then on, there was no stopping him, as he had the best pace by far out there. It is crazy to think that Verstappen is actually starting to dominate the championship, and if Baku and Hungary had gone differently, the title could be almost wrapped up! Perez drove his heart out, and did very well to pressurise Hamilton, but the dirty air was too much for him in the end. I am glad that Checo has turned a corner with the car, which has helped the team massively in the constructors’ standings. Even better, was seeing him on the podium at home, a well deserved one for a fan favourite driver.
It turns out it was a blip for Red Bull on Saturday, but you cannot write the rollercoaster of emotions that occurred in the Mercedes garage over those few days. The dejection of practice, and seemingly being nowhere, to all of a sudden get one over the rivals, and look to have a chance at the win, then for it all to go wrong in the 1st kilometre of racing, and lose even more points to Red Bull. They just lacked downforce all weekend it seems, as their straight line speed was mega, yet it was outweighed massively in the 2nd and 3rd sector. The season isn’t over; however, Mercedes needs to get winning soon to stop their run of titles ending! Lewis did what you expect of him really, by maximising what he had, and withstood the pressure from Perez. You have to feel for Bottas, who was brilliant in qualifying, for it all to come to nothing in the race, and be stuck behind the guy who took him out, for most of the race.
This race showed that AlphaTauri should at least be near to the battle for 3rd in the constructors, if they had got their act together sooner, and if Tsunoda had been able to deliver on his promise better. No one could lay a glove on Gasly in the race, as he continues to excel in F1. They were helped by the Honda being brilliant at altitude this weekend, although that car is clearly great overall too! Yuki was unlucky to get hit on Lap 1, especially given his pace all weekend.
Ferrari pretty much did what they set out to do in Mexico, as they surged ahead of McLaren, and build further towards 2022. Sainz got unlucky with the Turn 1 spin, in that he fell behind Leclerc, and had to use team orders to get by and try to attack Gasly, which came to nothing in the end. Ferrari do look like the favourites now for 3rd place.
It was an unfortunate mistake for Ricciardo to make into the 1st corner, as he locked up on the inside and ploughed into Bottas. It completely ruined all the good work he had done over the weekend, and should arguably have been a penalty. Norris did a solid job to fight from the back to score a point, but it was peanuts compared to their rivals!
Age was clearly on their side in this race, as the older statesmen of Vettel, Alonso and Raikkonen all managed to come away from here with points. They all had great pace, and weren’t holding anyone up, which for the Alfa Romeo is great news, given their toils this year. Alonso was able to go a race without causing any track limits controversy, which is equally impressive! Vettel was able to use the overcut to his advantage, as Giovinazzi got stuck behind traffic following his pitstop, which utterly ruined his race! Ocon and Stroll couldn’t reach the points from their lowly starting spots.
Haas had another difficult weekend, with Mick not able to keep up the promise he showed on Friday, before being taken out in Turn 1 in the race. As for Williams, they were nowhere too, which is unexpected for the team who have done so well on occasions this year! Can Brazil be a different story?
Sadly, we didn’t get a stunner on our return to the Mexican capital, however there is a better chance of some action at the iconic Interlagos circuit, and with the final sprint race of the year happening there, who knows what could happen! Can Max and Lewis keep their 100% record up, of coming together on the Sunday after the Sprint race?
