When Nimona is in a bad mood she usually wants attention and affection so she’ll shift into her cat form and sit on Bal and Ambrosius 

She knows they would never move her even when she’s in her human form but she feels like being a cat is just a bonus 

The first time she sat on Ambrosius' shoulders when she was in a bad mood he cried for like three hours 

When Bal has a bad day he goes nonverbal and collapses on the nearest comfy area 

He doesn’t care if it’s his bed the couch or a pillow on the floor he’s laying their face first and not moving until he feels better

It’s not uncommon for him to come home and just plop down on the couch even when Nimona and Ambrosius are sitting there

And they won't move him either they kind of just accept their fate and continue what they were doing to the best of their abilities 

When Ambrosius has a bad day he cleans 

Like obsessively 

He won’t stop until every surface in the house is spotless and there isn’t a single dust particle in sight 

The only room that he stays out of is Nimona’s (half out of respect for them half out of fear of what he would find in that room)

Most of the time when he feels like the house is up to code he’ll be too tired to move let alone think

And that’s when Bal and Nimona set up their super secret evil plan

Bal forces him to get comfy on the couch while Nimona plays his favorite movies and gives him his favorite snacks

It’s truly diabolical but it’s also what Amrbosius does for them when they’re in a bad mood so they feel no guilt  

Sometimes when he’s feeling especially shitty Nimona will shift into a dog and let him cuddle them like a big stuffed animal

So I was just reminded sometimes cats will sit on your injuries and purr because they think it makes you feel better (and as a cat owner I can confirm it does)

When I remembered this I was thinking that Nimona would subconsciously shift into a cat and lay on Bal’s arm or Ambrosius' shoulder when they’re in pain and just purr 

And they swear that it helps every single time (kind of like a mom kissing her kid's injuries)

Ambrosius will always use people's full names when he’s pissed at them

I don’t know when this idea popped into my head but I’m just imagining Bal and Nimona chilling outside until they hear “Ballister and Nimona Boldheart get your asses inside now!” from their house

And their neighbors watch as some of the most powerful people in the realm scramble to run inside 

Most people would assume that Nimona would either stay where they are out of spite or fly away  

But they’re so caught off guard because Ambrosius always calls Nimona “Nim”

Plus he’s made Ambrosius mad enough times to know that if he apologizes enough times and makes Bal give him the patented “Puppy Dog Eyes™” he’ll fold like a lawn chair 

Nimona calls Ambrosius “nemesis” for two reasons 

The first one is he thinks his name is stupidly long (and Ambrosius agrees) and the second reason is he thinks it sounds cooler (he agrees again)

Plus it’s also hilarious to imagine Nimona yelling “Nemesis” while running full speed at Ambrosius and then tackling him

Sometimes they knock him on his ass and sometimes he picks them up and puts them in air jail

i just watched nimona (minor spoilers ahead! go watch it!)

first half was just "awww cute lighthearted movie, neato, this is cool!" loving the characters and the vibe, everything's going well. Seems like the conflict wrapped up a little too quickly, so i check how much time is left. there is another half of the movie, so ok awesome! wonder what they're gonna do!

movie ends. i am in shambles.

also are we gonna talk about how the main character is a gay amputee poc with an adorably caring boyfriend who is shown to be the explicit love interest the moment he comes on screen and his sidekick is a genderfluid metalhead minor with pink hair who he pretty much adopts, like

i love them so much

and then also just...all of the end credits (the progress flag transition? the anarchy heart? it made me jump for joy. nimona knows what's up)

More on how much I love the little details of how Ballister worked the hardest and trained to be the best:

When given the sword that kills the queen he immediately recognises that its off . He knows his weapon so well that he can tell just by holding it that its wrong

Built his own arm. Built his own arm with one hand. Built his own arm, with one hand, with no resources just junk in an abandoned layer within however long it was between the queen being killed and Nimona adopting him.

Catches can without looking at it before it can drop and make a noise. AKA the moment i went oh fuck he's good.

Only needed to fight with Nimona (well...be flung around on her back) once to know her fighting style, and then was immediately able to slot himself alongshide her in a fight and cover her back.

Also I noticed that when the squire puts on his armour he struggles around. Which wouldn't mean much if I hadn't had someone point out to me how his armour is looks worn and isn't shiny and new loke the others. So then I couldn't unsee how much bulkier his armour is. All the other knights have slimlined, lightweight armour that is fitted at the ankle, but balisters is nothing kike theres. Making me think that his armour is probably a lot older and tougher and literally makes him work harder.

How many guards tried to nab them when they walked straight up to Ambrosius? The focus is on Nimona as a powerhouse, but he takes down everyone that comes at him. And it would go unoticed as blah blah movie action look at the monkey if not for the initial build up on his mad skills.

Rides a horse through a crumbling kingdom with little to no visibility and scales a statue of Glorith in record time!!!

Side note: to how much Ambrosius flusters him and his brain turns OFF aside from when he first sees him again post arm chop and reentering the closet. When Ambrosius follows them to the market, he is so devoid of braincells that he doesn't just get put of the car and run, he flails and tried to hide and covers his face and is like "do you think he saw us?" MY GUY IS SO SMART BUT HE WENT TO SEE HIM FOR NATCHOS???

I also love how we see Ballister slowly gain affection for Nimona by picking up her phrases and mannerisms. Like when he says "let's go break stuff" and "sorry, small-minded question..."

Like that's the biggest hint that he really cares about her. You know he doesn't really mean it when he calls her a "monster" after he shows her the scroll. You always adopt little habits after people you care about. Not only did he care, but he did it by copying her phrases... He LISTENS to her. He's starting to GET where she's coming from. And he didn't do it just once like so many movies do. He did it SEVERAL times.

AND ANOTHER THING ABOUT NIMONA-

It's just profondly sad but also terrifying to think of a teenager so hated and alone that she tries to befriend a potential murderer just to not be alone, because him, at least, won't or can't reject her. Like I'm not a parent and I'm too young anyway to get a kid but that a new fear unlocked.

And yes, apparently there is more violence in the book and they maybe do some killing? I haven't read it sorry.

But in the movie, yes Nimona is a punk, she likes violence, she wants to destroy the system but she is not a murderer. The whole point of the story is that she is not a monster. The violence she commits is on the level of any cartoon fight. And even when Ballister gets in danger and she gets angry, she transforms into a dragon but doesn't use her fire breathing , and she saved a child. She makes real effort to not hurt people.

She tries to play the role of villain not because she wants to be one but because:

That is the only role society allow her to play

She thinks she can bond with Ballister that way

She is a 1000 years old immortal shapeshifter, and she wants to be a sidekick. Because she is just that alone. Even when she meets Ballister for the 1st time, all that murder stuff but at the end what she proposes is to talk. Just talk.

In conclusion: give me the adoption paper

I've been thinking about what the Nimona characters would be doing after the events of the movie and have decided that Ambrosius, after all the pressure that had been on him to maintain this big public image and have a huge career and be a rich successful icon, I have decided that he would be a Stay At Home Dad and nobody can tell me different. He'd adopt some adorable child/ren with Ballister and he would spend his days building a family and a household filled with the warmth, love, and intimacy that he lacked growing up.

He wouldn't have to deal with the normal issues with that lifestyle bc he comes from a stupid rich family which eliminates the financial danger of becoming a SAHD, and we all KNOW Ballister would NOT be some incompetent father!! He would recognize his husband's rewarding but exhausting labor for what it was and share household responsibilities whenever possible and be an active and involved parent and husband ‼️Also Ballister would still cook because his Rich Kid Husband cannot be trusted!! They are partners in life fr

I am just giddy at the thought of Ambrosius planning out crafts and other activities for his kid(s) and finally, finally getting to live in peace. Ballister is the one who craved adventure and honor, Ambrosius just wanted to love his family. He deserves it 💛

For Xie Lian:

The BIGGEST nerd about swords and swordfighting and martial arts it's his special interest and he's incredibly good at it! He ascended to godhood because of his prowess. He can literally defeat people with powers in swordfighting at a time he has no powers of his own. Talks people's ears off about swordfighting and recommends what specific weapon is best for them. Definitely has sword related trauma for *reasons* and doesn't like actually using them to harm anymore, but that doesn't mean he's not still incredibly skilled at using them when he needs to. And he'll still gush over any sword you give him to look at ❤️. A great quote from the book is: The Flower-Crowned Martial God: Sword in one hand, flower in the other. [they] only remembered the flower, but had forgotten:  Xie Lian ascended because of his sword.

Xie Lian basically has a special interest in swords. He's literally so good at using swords that the only person on par with him was the Heavenly Emperor and that was when he was 17!!!! He is LITERALLY "The Flower Crowned Martial God, Sword in One Hand, Flower in the Other". He knows everything about every kind of sword and all the history of every sort of legendary sword. His husband gifts him a whole armory full of swords and he spends a few hours geeking out about it. He's so good at swords he came up with a special technique to absorb the blow from two other swords so that only he himself is harmed but the other two he's trying to get to stop fighting Aren't harmed, and it's so special that he's *recognized* by it even after centuries. He also got stabbed by a sword a hundred times in one night does that count. He REALLY loves swords and is SO good at swords. He's the sword boy.

He is so incredibly autistic about swords. The author descibes him as a sword otaku. He canonically had a massive collection of swords in his youth that he carted around everywhere and wore a different one each day so they would all be appreciated. His love interests most successful flirtation was showing him his armory and just letting him run around picking everything up and infodumping about swords for several hours. Also he could wreck anyone. AND he's gay.

For Ballister:

he could tell when his sword was switched out for a fake, graduated top of his class so we know he's a good fighter, also the scene where he's fighting is hot because he's so confident with a sword in his hand, also he's gay

A canonically gay, disabled, South Asian man takes down the government with his genderqueer shapeshifter sidekick/adopted daughter! He has a swordfight with his ex-boyfriend! in which he defeats about 20 knights singlehandedly! 

top of his knight class this man is a master swordsman

(Movie) He has used a sword since he broke into the Institutes training ground and ended up becoming a knight

He has very divorced vibes with Ambrosius and he uses a sword.

He's a legit knight! So, it's in the fine print.

According to the Nimona movie, Ballister here has been practicing the art of sword fighting since childhood to earn the trust of the city and he was SO CLOSE to becoming a knight. He's also definitely not dating another one of his knight mates (?). Nope. Not at all. This movie is super straight /s I think he also beats an entire army of knights with nothing but his sword and a chaotic good shapshifter so that's pretty cool. He's also south Asian, has a prosthetic arm he made himself and is honestly such a goofy guy (in a good way ofc) if that's anything.

Ballister said as he reaches out his hand. A child with long red hair looks at him with hesitation. She slowly reaches her hand out and Ballister caught her in his hand. As he flys up a bit, with a soothing voice , he says to her, " You won't be alone anymore, kid, I'll take care of you. No matter if you are a shapeshifter, I'm sure the fairies will accept you for who you are, ". Nimona smiles, happy to find someone who accepts her for who she is and be able to take care of her with care, just as she longed for a 1000 years before..
