Arrowleaf Balsamroot (Balsamorhiza sagittata) is a host plant for over 40 species of moths, almost all of which have not been observed to use any other plant.聽
It doesn鈥檛 take well to transplanting, as it鈥檚 root systems are known to grow extremely deep. They flower in mid-late spring for anyone interested in trying to collect some seed to grow them.
The leaves, roots and seeds are all edible, and it has medicinal properties for relieving the pain of bruises and burns.

Every day, a photograph, a poem. Another sunflower photo from Crescent Bay. Love how they turn to face the sun. I needed this reminder today.

Asteraceae Balsamorhiza sagittata
Arrowleaf Balsamroot

This guy is actually pretty interesting! These are extremely drought-resistant plants and can be found as far north as Eastern Washington (where I live!) and as far south as the Mojave Desert. If youre on the west coast, youve probably seen these peppering undeveloped hills and fields in the spring. Although, admittedly, I dont recall seeing them much back in California. Theyre all over the place here.
