Benefits of living in a small town in Thailand

               Thailand is a marvelous kingdom. It offers different types of lifestyles for expatriates to choose from, picturesque islands, breathtaking mountain scenery and cosmopolitan cities. It features with their remarkable Thai food and massage, Buddhist temples, strange wildlife, interesting history and a distinct culture. Don’t be surprised when Thai people smile at you even if they don’t know you because Thailand is known as ‘Land of Smiles.’. And expect that you will see numerous of tourists from around the world because it is considered as tourist destination.

               What about when you live here? Would you be able to sustain your lifestyle you used to back home? Is it safe? Can you manage to eat the spicy food? Does cost of living here is really low? Well, my answer to these questions—absolutely YES! I been here for more than 6 months now. I can say that I have a good quality of life here in Thailand; However, there are certain things you need to consider when you move to Thailand either living in a small town or cosmopolitan cities. In my case, I tried both. I used to live in Bangkok, Thailand for 2 months and currently here in a small town in Dankhuntot district, part of Isan Region. This place is the precise opposite from the busy metropolis of Bangkok. I am thankful that MediaKids Academy assigned me here. At first, I was hesitant because I already enjoyed my stay in Bangkok. I was hoping that MediaKids would assign me to teach just nearby. But I am more than happy that I’m here in a small town now. It’s very stimulating and quite laid back. Everything is inexpensive, in just one meal, I only spent 20baht at school canteen during lunch break. I can’t even consume my 100baht budget per day. I even send more than half of my salary to my family in the Philippines. There were times that I missed the food back home but now, I get used to spicy food here. No doubt, this place is definitely a safe place I have been in to. Well, crappy things can happen anywhere, but you just need to be aware of your surroundings.

PROS and CONS 

                 I grew up in small town in Mactan, Masbate, Philippines. Then, moved to a city to attend college. So, I already get used to live in a small town. In my opinion, living in a small town in Thailand can be charming, but for others, it might not be the right fit. It always has advantages and some drawbacks. Here are some of the pros and cons of living in a small town in Thailand.

                 These are the pros and cons I have noticed living in a small town in Thailand. I am still grateful that I was given a privilege to stay in a place where the streets were safe and the things here are very inexpensive to the point that I able to save money. There were times that I missed the city, but I always reminded myself that I am no longer a tourist here. I am here for work and to help my family back home. So, instead, of dwelling more on about missing my city life. I’d rather had to divert my attention to other things such as to focus more on my teaching career, feel the nature and peaceful atmosphere. One of the things I like most being here in Dankhuntot is having a peaceful atmosphere. You know, this kind of peace and calm is contagious. It rapidly affects you and you can feel the stress free. I really can feel a lot of differences between the people in a small town and in the cities. City folks are unfriendly, sometimes rude and always in a hurry, don’t even have form of sense of community. Unlike in a small town, folks are more genuinely interested in you and have the time to talk to you. Nightlife in the city specially in Bangkok is more lively compared to small town in Thailand. 

                So far, I never encountered any issues living here in Dankhuntot. As I mentioned above, small towns both have advantages and disadvantages, but it still depends on the persons’ perspective. If, you consider teaching here in Thailand. I would highly recommend being assigned in a small town than the metropolitan area of Thailand. Of course, choose Mediakids academy as your placement agency. They have contracts of more than seventy schools nationwide and have placed over one thousand foreign teachers. 

                These are my lovely colleagues in Dankhuntot School. Five teachers are from the Philippines and one is from Canada. The one in red is the English head foreign department. The other two are consultants from Mediakids Academy. All foreign teachers that has been assigned here in Dankhuntot school were very grateful as well and thankful that they were assigned in a small town in Thailand.

I wonder how different parts of the world would look like without humans.
