Decorative Sunday: Art Muscle
Art Muscle magazine (1986-1997) was a bi-monthly art publication located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Initiated by Milwaukee writer, art historian, curator, and gallery director Debra Brehmer, the magazine was published by her for nine years until it was taken over by her colleague Judith Ann Moriarty in 1995. Art Muscle’s circulation was 20,000. It was distributed free in Wisconsin and sold on newsstands nationally. The format was modeled after Andy Warhol’s Interview Magazine in New York. Taking a democratic approach to the arts, it covered a range of activities from visual art to theatre, dance, music, architecture, and vernacular concerns. Its large pages afforded a generous use of photographs provided by the region’s best-known artists such as Francis Ford, J. Shimon & J. Lindemann, Tom Bamberger, and Jim Brozek. The magazine became known and admired nationally for the quality and depth of its writing combined with a personable, approachable tone.
Presented here are some of Art Muscle’s iconic covers, from top to bottom:
1.) Big Black Crow by Marvin Hill, relief print, 1991. 2.) Street skateboarder photograph by Jim Brozek. 3.) Photograph by Tim Waite. 4.) Self Portrait-Warrior by Dennis Nechvatal, oil on canvas, 1986. 5.) Detail from Trautes Heim by Anna and Bernhard Blume, silver gelatin print, 1986. 6.) The Enlightenment of the Experienced Virgin by Julie Jiannacopolous. Photograph by Richard Beauchamp. 7.) Zak by Barbara Ciurej and Lindsay Lochman, silver gelatin print, 1992. 8.) The Perfect Wife by Mitch O'Connell, drawing, 1990. 9.) Portrait of Wyatt Osato, designed by Jim Catel of Design North. 10.) St. Patrick's Day by Jerome Karidis, collage, 1990.
Our copy of Art Muscle was donated by Debra Brehmer, and it has been fully digitized as part of our Digital Collections with generous support from John Shannon and Jan Ser.

“Process”
Consider approaching today in one of two ways:
1. Show/explain your photographic process! How do you decide what to shoot, where to shoot, and when to shoot? What kinds of things/people inspire you?
2. Represent or interpret the word “process”
- there are lots of different ways that “process” comes into play in photography: sometimes processing refers to how the image is edited/manipulated (some creative ideas here) and sometimes it refers to how the image was taken (lots of different process ideas here)
- collaborative United States-based artists Barbara Ciurej and Lindsay Lochman’s project, “Processed Views”, where they construct diorama landscapes using heavily processed foods
- Japan-based artist Mankichi Shinshi’s project, “Process of Elimination”, photographing strangers alone in various environments

Alt Process:  Cyanotype Inspiration  (1/24/17)
Barbara Ciurej & Lindsay Lochman (Top)
Website:  http://www.ciurejlochmanphoto.com/naturalhistory/nathiststatement.html
I chose Ciurevji and Lochman because of the silhouettes.  They combined old historic busts with photos of nature to have a harmony with nature and history.  In the series, the cyanotypes play with the idea of plant growth and the physical and mental growth of human beings.  Also, Anna Atikins is referenced for her connections to nature.  Although the article does not mention it, I think that it would have been cool for them to combine her bust with nature as a tribute to her and her memory.
I was also inspired by a double exposure photo that I took in Photo II over a year ago that featured my side profile with flowers over it (2nd photo pictured above).  I liked how the side profile makes something of the brush strokes, rather than the brush strokes just being seen.  I am also inspired by Victorian silhouettes and that old-time, classic feel.  The photos that I have right now to work with are self-portraits without my face, so it would be neat to incorporate a face into a faceless photo.  I want to experiment with middle-ages silhouettes and children, also.  In addition to self portraits, I might also play with nature in some way.
For the process, I am trying to grasp how they have created these images.  Like the photograms that I was going to do, I was playing with cutting out the silhouette and leaving the space blank and then filling it with the photo.  I might also have to maybe trace the outline onto my paper and only fill in that with the brush and paint.
