Amanda Randolph Vs. Barbara Mullen
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda
Amanda Randolph - (The Laytons) - First African-American performer to star in a regularly scheduled network television show, technically it aired in 1948, before the 1950 cut off but I believe the historical importance should allow an exception. Like almost all shows aired on the defunct DuMont Television Network, few details exist and all footage was destroyed when the network shut down in 1956. Yes, she was playing a maid, but still, she was there at the very beginning of commercial television and I think that's cool!
Barbara Mullen - (Doctor Finlay's Casebook) - Born to Irish immigrant parents in Boston, USA, Barbara Mullen's life story is the stuff that movies are made of. Despite a rough start in life, she worked as a singer and dancer, making her stage debut aged three in the USA, before making her debut in London in the play Jeannie and becoming an overnight sensation. Her most celebrated role in television was in Dr. Finlay's Casebook which began airing on the BBC in 1962 and ran for eight seasons. She played Janet McPherson, the housekeeper to Doctors Finlay and Cameron and made up one of the three main roles in the long running series. Janet's kind but firm and no nonsense attitude captured hearts and made her a household name and a British TV icon.
