Trani (Puglia). Views of the harbor. As soon as moved from the Villa Comunale to the north, the natural inlet of the marina will completely occupy our view, with the suggestive bell tower of the cathedral in the distance. Trani is today the capital of the Barletta-Andria-Trani province, together with the other two cities, a new province that according to the locals is fictitious and Bari still controls everything. The port is chock full of fishing boats and, I imagine, tourist boats, it can contain over 500. There are two piers: Santa Lucia in the west and Sant'Antonio (where the fort stands) in the east. The Roman presence in the city is attested since the third century. B.C. The port was used in the 9th century for the departure for the 1st crusade and for the trade of wheat and oil. The city was home to the Templars. The peak of prosperity was reached under the Swabian domination of Frederick II, who in 1233 had the castle built and granted freedom of worship to the Jewish community, which occupied the Giudecca, not far from the port, and had four synagogues (in the present, church of Sant'Anna -museum- and the Scolanova). But that, in turn, mean fewer decide to visit Andria, which is a shame.⁣ ⁣ The old town is built around the cathedral, originally built in the 12th century but reconstructed in a Baroque style two centuries later.⁣ ⁣ Another important landmark is the Porta di Sant'Andrea. Andria once had a series of defensive fortifications and impressive gateways that barred entry into the town centre.
