i don't know what lm montgomery put in barney snaith but he is by far my favorite male love interest, like she really said "here's this unkempt hobo with a shady past who is also well read and thoughtful and bitter who is not much of a talker and yet somehow has disney princess vibes, the girlies will go wild for him" and you know what? we did

So, I had a little fun on Canva creating John Foster's book covers.

It's by no means perfect but I like the look of them :)

Also the last one isn't a book mentioned in The Blue Castle but is inspired by this excerpt :

“Here’s a patch of dandelions,” said Valancy, unsubdued. “Dandelions shouldn’t grow in the woods, though. They haven’t any sense of the fitness of things at all. They are too cheerful and self-satisfied. They haven’t any of the mystery and reserve of the real wood-flowers.”

“In short, they’ve no secrets,” said Barney. “But wait a bit. The woods will have their own way even with those obvious dandelions. In a little while all that obtrusive yellowness and complacency will be gone and we’ll find here misty, phantom-like globes hovering over those long grasses in full harmony with the traditions of the forest.”

Neither Valancy nor Barney could find much acceptance or happiness in the society they "belonged" to. Where they were truly happy was their little house in the middle of a lake, where Valancy chose to spend her last days.

Electric Touch

"All I know is this could either break my heart or bring it back to life / Got a feeling your electric touch could fill this ghost town up with life"

Valancy and her heart condition are betting it all on Barney and his ability to bring color into her previously dull life. And as for Barney, no lyrics are more fitting than "I've grown accustomed to sleeping alone / Still, I know that all it takes is to get it right just one time"

At one end was a table or counter crowded with odd-looking utensils. Used no doubt by Barney in his smelly operations. Chemical experiments, probably, she reflected dully. 

Do we ever find out exactly what these chemical experiments were? The John Foster stuff doesn't seem very scientific, more like creative non-fiction. But I'm curious what Barney was doing in there besides writing

Story: The Strange and Wonderful Marriage of Barney Snaith

Here it is! The first chapter of a fic I wanted to write since I was a teenager and fell in love with Barney Snaith and Valancy Stirling for the first time - a retelling of Blue Castle from Barney's POV. I have the next three chapters mostly written so I should be able to update soon.

I owe all the thanks for gaining courage and inspiration to write this story to the Blue Castle Book Club here on Tumblr. So many of particular scenes or interpretations of canon are a direct results of our discussions. I haven't had so much fun in a very long time and I can't wait to read the other fanfics hopefully coming out of it!

I will be participating in the book club's challenge with another fic, but since this behemoth is a multichapter longer than the original book (yes, really... I cover my head in shame, but I never write a sentence where three paragraphs would do) I decided to post it separately.

I hope you will enjoy reading my interpretation of Barney as much as I was writing it!
