I’ve been excited to share this portrait for a bit, now. Fannie was one of the first people I met in the Arctic when I moved to Utqiagvik. An Iñupiaq elder, and one of the last great college teachers of the language. She was always warm, welcoming, and curious. Always ready with a hug and some cheer. And witty, too. I’m certain she had a lot of laughs in her life.

When @ilisagvik_college asked if I’d paint her portrait after she passed, it was such an easy decision. I was honored. And I may have sent a few prayers out to be sure I didn’t mess it up, too. Fannie Akpik was singular, unforgettable. ❤️

When you travel, remember that a foreign country or even a different city is not designed to make you comfortable. It is designed to make its own people comfortable. 🌎 I still have so many photos I want to post from my visit to #Utqiagvik (formerly Barrow), Alaska. The problem is, the whole experience left me wondering how the heck I was gonna adequately talk about it on here. ⠀⠀ It’s just so culturally different! I’ve never felt more foreign in the very country I hold a passport to. ⠀⠀ I wanna represent the Iñupiat and Arctic lifestyle with appreciation and thoughtful wonder — and without misconceptions or judgement (see my subsistence whaling post which stirred up quite the convo across my social media platforms). ⠀⠀ Anyway, this is a pretty common yard on the #NorthSlope. It’s not exactly @hgtv worthy, but when you’re living in a town that no roads lead to, you don’t always have easy or cheap options of disposing your trash. October 2019 I did something a little different. I flew back to my home in the #Arctic, the forever enigmatic village of #Utqiagvik, where I painted a very fast community #mural for @ilisagvik_college. I used to work for the #tribalcollege, so this was a personally gratifying project.

It’s stylistically experimental, to fit a 5-day timeframe start to finish, which felt wonderfully loose compared to my usual approach. In any case, it was rewarding to leave this for Ilisagvik and the community. I’ll be excited to see it installed next visit. Thanks so much to many friends old and new for your generosity and company❣️

Have you ever had your luggage lost while traveling? ⠀⠀ Have you ever showed up to the Arctic to find your suitcase isn’t there. Your suitcase that you packed all your warm winter clothing in...🥶 23° F with snow flurries and all I had was a sweater and jeans. ⠀⠀ SO lucky that when I arrived to my hotel 20 minutes later, the airport contacted me saying my luggage finally appeared! ⠀⠀ It turned out that a girl with the same last name as me AND the same first initial was on my 2nd of 4 flights (crazy right?!) and her bag was mistakenly tagged with MY phone number and email! ⠀⠀ So when I showed up in Utqiagvik, the @alaskaair Rep was like “I don’t see it here either, let me check on my computer.....Philadelphia?!” 😧 Insert jaw drop here. ⠀⠀ When they contacted me later in my hotel, I half expected to show up to the airport to find this other girls bag instead. I was praying she had packed for a winter destination cuz I was totally gonna steal her jacket for the day. But lawd have mercy it was mine afterall. ⠀⠀ LESSON LEARNED (actually it’s a lesson I already knew but decided to ignore on this trip) : Wear and/or pack the clothing you know you’ll need as soon as you land IN.YOUR.CARRYON. ⠀⠀ Also, to whoever the other J Sheehan was, I really hope you eventually got your luggage back. 5 MORE DAYS UNTIL ALASKA! ❄️ A friend of mine who works for @alaskaair was so incredibly kind to offer me her 2 one-way guest pass tickets. The “problem” was...they were gonna expire in like 2 days. That meant I had just 2 days to set aside a couple hundred $ and book my flights to anywhere Alaska Airlines flys to. ⠀⠀ I looked at the list of destination options and ya know what I said to myself? I said “Hm. The Arctic in May sounds like a great idea.” (Originally I tried going in late June for the whaling festival, but the site wouldn’t let me book for June). ⠀⠀ Everyone I told was like “You DO know that Alaska Airlines flys to like...Hawaii...Costa Rica...Mexico...But no. You chose the ARCTIC?!” 💁‍♀️ ⠀⠀ Here’s the thing : In 2015, I worked an incredible seasonal job in Barrow, AK — the northernmost point of North America. But I was under contract not to take too many photos and I couldn’t post them anywhere. I’ve always wanted to go back to this otherworldly town by myself and take it all in again. Freely capture the landscape and the Inupiat community, and share this unique way of living with others. But it’s pretty expensive to visit. ⠀⠀ So naturally, when a highly discounted plane ticket presented itself, I jumped at the chance to go back.
