Sarah Goldberg for Rolling Stone:
“I love the ambiguity of Jaeden as John. He plays it so beautifully watching that, where he knows this isn’t true. There’s the scene within the film where Barry’s rescuing us from the shootout. But obviously, John would remember that’s not how that went. Plus, Sally told him that his father is a murderer. And yet it’s not like he says to his friend, “You know what? This isn’t what happened.” There’s a small sense of relief in him that this is the version of things that is out in the world. And I think he’s grown into a decent person somehow, despite his DNA on both sides, and yet he also comes from two liars and there’s a lie being told.”

Gene absolutely wrecking his reputation and history spending the rest of his life in prison by killing Barry who was actually willing to turn himself in in the end.

The wild mischaracterisation of Barry and Sally's actions for nothing more than a massive misunderstanding of events and the general glamorisation of Hollywood is almost poetic. Gene wasn't a great person but he wasn't evil. He didn't have Barry's sickness. But he had Barry's anger - an anger that was arguably justified - and in the one moment that he acted on it, he was labelled a murderer. His entire story was twisted to fit a narrative that mischaracterised Barry as some kind of sympathetic war hero. We know what Barry did. We know what Gene didn't. Gene and Sally may not be dead but they are his victims.

yeah i get it. gene cousineau ended up serving life in prison because it was his ultimate punishment. yes he deserved to be immortalized as the villain in a hero vets biopic because he returned to his selfish narcissistic ways even after eight years of isolation and inner peace seeking. yes he will go down in history as the person who killed the love of his life because it will serve as a constant reminder that he chose to besmirch janice’s memory for just five more seconds of fame. yes just desserts and all. but! there is a second layer of commentary in the last episode, and part of the reason i think bill hader’s been dipping his toe into religion in this last season. barry, a good christian vet, is painted as the hero in his biopic because… it’s hollywood… what else are they going to do? (make him the villain?) and gene? a jewish guy? well slap him with an accent and show him emerging from dark corners of the room and boom you got yourself a perfect hollywood antagonist. i can’t stand this show.

he died when he stood his ground, after his love (his light) was taken from him by his own darkness
he was afraid in his final moments, consumed by the fear that came with the end that engulfed him until his heart stopped beating
his death was finite.
