You've talked before about renovating your house. If money were no object, what renovations would you do?
Here’s the list! It’s long and most of it pipe dream stuff, so prepare yourself.
Change the front of the garage from a temporary wall and into a permanent one. We removed the door with a wall because the garage is serving as a room and the door was useless at keeping out weather, insects, and animals. Replace the current floor to flatten in, then raise it up so it’s even with the rest of the house. The garage will then be turned into a kitchen and dining room, with windows and proper walling, actually turning it into a room that looks part of the house rather than an add-on, which it is.
The backroom of the garage is also and add-on. The laundry room has the original wall and window of where the house use to sit, and you can see into the backroom. It was an open cement poor. We’ll knock it off, and then add a second living room or sunroom, level with the rest of the house. The storage room connected to it will be opened into a staircase and full bath with a stand-in shower. The stair will lead to what will serve as Husband’s room, complete with a small (not mini) fridge, counter, and microwave. An open porch will also be added so he can smoke in peace and the smoke will never bother me. He never smokes indoors, but when he does smoke, it leaks into any other windows.
The hawthorn tree next to the house will be knocked off. It smells like trash, sewage, and sex fluids. Fucking disgusting. It’s in the neighbor’s yard, but if we pay to cut it down and mulch it, he’ll let us. Then replace the fence where it was. In the summer, people come over and complain about the smell. The city even came over, thinking the sewage was leaking into the yard. Nope, it’s the fucking tree. I’ll make offerings to the tree spirits to prevent them from fucking us over, planting fruit trees for them instead.
The current kitchen will be no more with the new one in place. The wall between the current kitchen and dining room will be knocked out. The original outside wall will remain, though upgraded, because it bares the weight of the house. Plus, I hate houses with open flooring. No escape from noise or smell. The current dining room and living room will have the ceiling raised and the stucco on the walls removed and replaced. The outlets will also be moved, windows replaced, and insulation upgraded. The old dining room will serve as our library with all our books, magazines, and comic books. Bubby will probably have his DnD stuff, movies and shows only he likes (like the superhero stuff, anime, cartoons, and martial arts stuff) up in his room or the second living room. Wherever he decides to have his DnD sessions. I want bookshelves installed as part of the walls. Oh, and the current kitchen will have the wall pulled forward to be even with the rest of the house, expanding it.
The current bathroom will be removed and turned into a hallway, it’s that narrow. My current sewing room will be the location of the new bathroom with an expansion to serve as the laundry room, with space for our color-coded laundry hampers, an industrial sink that will double as the bathroom sink, and shelves and cabinets for laundry and bathroom stuff. The bathroom itself will have a deep tub large enough for two people to face each other comfortable, the drain and facet in the middle. The closet will be a walk-in with enough space for two people to be comfortable in there, as well as a bench or seat because sometimes feet hurt or balance is fucked.
The hall will lead to the master bedroom, guest room, and sewing room. The bedroom will be large enough for a potential king size bed and walking room around it, a walk-in closet that can fit all seasonal clothes for two people. I fold nearly all our clothes, with just a handful hanging. That means shelves, and lots of them. I use those foldable fabric boxes, and can make them as well, and those hold all my clothes except for just a very few. I think an 8x10 foot space will more than suffice. Plus there’ll be other stuff closets hold as well. I want a good size window, but not deep set. I need to cover this with blackout curtains. Space for a rocking chair, lamp, and a foldable wall so I can read while my husband sleeps would be fantastic.
My sewing room will be no less than 15x15 feet, ideally 20x20, with one 10 foot ceiling. The wall on that side will serve for displaying quilts and hosting my design wall (which is basically flannel hanging on the wall, but I wanna staple it to solid wood sheets to prop up nice and neat). Space for all my sewing stuff, bespoke shelving for fabric, books, and magazines, and a portion of the room for a day bed and side table for displaying quilts “in use”. Lots of windows, but at least two are solar. Think solar panels, but windows. They even come with outlets!!! Current pricey, but I fucking want them. I also want a bay window for plants to hangout in, plus my cat loves sunny windows. Space on the floor for an area rug will also be good. The rug will need to be just larger than a queen size quilt so I can baste them without taping the backing to bare floors. Oh, and a closet. This will host all finished and unfinished quilts, keeping them away from light, dust, and cat hair. Shelving for finished quilts (I fold and roll them for space and lack of folds and space to hang finished quilt tops.My sewing room will also be my studio. I’m a painter, favoring watercolors but occasionally acrylics. Currently, I have no paint. Mine was in tubes that solidified and nothing I did could cut them open. I have paints on my Throne list for anyone to buy on my behave; if any of you have suggestions for cake style paints, please direct me to them so they can be added to the list. I miss painting, but the good stuff is all I’ll buy, and it’s fucking pricey. I have plenty of paper though!
The guest room will be small enough for a queen size bed, two side tables, and possibly bunk beds that can fold down from the wall. My baby sister and her two children can visit comfortably, and if any of them is uncomfortable in there, they can sleep in the second living room near the other bathroom. My sewing room will never be used for a guest to sleep in. That is a very private space for me and will not be shared like that. The theme for the guest room will be Hawaiian florals. I fucking love Hawaiian print! That stuff is BEAUTIFUL, and when I have the money, I’ll be ordering some from Hawaiian quilt shops. Make my own clothes with it, curtains, and just go hog-fucking-wild. I wore my Hawaiian shirts and Hawaiian print shorts to death. They were mostly patches before I finally decided to toss them out.
The hallway will also lead to a backdoor. The door is to a fully enclosed patio/porch. The sort that could qualify as a room. It’ll be a good place for time in the morning an evening, space for potting indoor plants, a catio, and enjoying a meal or tea “outdoors.” I’m a redhead, have low heat tolerance, and I’m a feast for mosquitos. My dream would also have an above ground black lined pool with a roof over it for shade, and connected to a patio. Just deep enough to tread, and wide enough for two people to float. So maybe 8x8 feet. We love water, we love swimming, but I will not swim in public pools. I worked at a public pool and know what’s in that water (red eyes are caused by a chemical reaction between ammonia, aka urine, and chlorinated water). Fuck that. Black lining means no algae and fewer animals, btw.
The front will also have a (mostly enclosed) porch. Not very wide, and long enough for the front door and cover a the length of the living room. A trellis for roses will serve as cover from the sun, which shines right in the front window for half the day. I don’t use blackout curtains because of all my plants, but with the other rooms set up as mentioned above, I can spread them out. The porch will be a pun because Bubby and I find the idea funny. The bench will look like a bar of butter, “slices” will be pillows, a hanging seat will look like a ladle that’s been cut off the handle. A ramp will lead into it.
In front of the new kitchen will be a carport with a gate at the front. Simply to deter thieves, complete with a motion detector light and a camera. That that invasive shit, but a closed-system kind. Oh, and a speaker so I can let the trespassers know they’re seen.
The front yard fence will be removed, and the brick pillars that once housed lamps will dismantled and the bricks used to create raised beds. The fence will be replaced with a wood picket fence I’ll paint to look like colored pencils. A couple fruit trees, possible avocado, will be planted near the fence with a sign that says “help yourself” near them. I firmly believe those with gardens that make a surplus of food ought to share the excess, free of charge, with public pantries and any plants near a walking border of the property should be free to pick. That’s me though. 
The front yard will also have a bathtub and toilet as containers, plus big tires, and may levels made this way. Pack the entire thing with wildflowers and native plants to attract hummingbirds, butterflies, bees, and other pollinators. A screen between the trellis and front porch will help keeps these all out so we can sit up there without being bothered. I want the front yard to be 100% wild as I can manage. Turn it into a haven for wildlife and eye candy for those who appreciate natural and (mostly) untamed beauty. Decor will also be more subtle for the local spirits, partially for the removal of the tree and massive remodeling of the house.
The backyard will be where we have order. Decor will be altars and statues to various spirits and deities will be much bolder and pronounced in the backyard. Beds raised enough I won’t have to bend over much or get on my knees, mosaic style pathways between the beds, portions of the yard left semi-wild with wildflowers. Lots of fruits, veggies, herbs, and root foods (like potatoes and parsnips). A kitchen, culinary, medicinal, and witch garden. I want the containers and beds to bed made out of found items so as to produce less waste, and multi-level for different plants. Those that require more moisture will be at the bottom, those at the top like it drier. Get more for my space kinda deal.
The roof will be replaced with a metal, light colored, roof. These have a 60 year lifespan, are less prone to damage, and light colors mean less heat is absorbed. Summers here are hot af, with 100+ F for several days on end. Our heating and a/c will be replaced, of course, with a ductless system operated by a heat pump (something I hadn’t heard of nor seen until we moved out here). Helping those put less effort into keeping the place comfortable will help keep utilities down. That and solar panels on the roof and solar windows for the areas that get the most sunlight. The house itself will be a light color, probably a sea green or similar, with white or a shade not far from terracotta. The gutters will collect water and store it into tanks under the yard; one of my neighbors does this and uses it for gardening. We have a lengthy rainy season, which means our “winter” results in green grass. Having water to care for the yard during the summer will be key to keeping costs down and wasting less. A pond for frogs and fish will also be nice, and having water collected to operate it will be necessary.
Each room within the house will have a theme, a few will have at least one stained glass window or a portion of the windows stained glass, and I’ll likely do all the decor and painting, go full Martha Stewart and homemaker. Ahem. The living room will have a “scrap quilt” theme, meaning a little bit of everything but set up in such a way it looks like it ought to be that way. Bare floors with area rugs because I Hate Carpet. The theme for the library will be green, white, and light brown, and the walls will have plants painted on them. The library will house my pothos, spider plants, and various other green non-flowering plants. I’ll add in daisies and flowers with cuttings from the yard or bouquets. As for the flooring, light colored material that looks like wood but is recycled stuff that’s significantly less effort and less expensive. We have it on the floor now, but it’s gray rosewood. The bedroom will be the most extensive, with the walls looking like a forest and an open canopy at the top to look at the arm of the Milky Way. The flooring will be the same as the front of the house, and have a couple area rugs. Some softly glowing paint, not that sticker stuff, and not black light. My sewing room will have mostly white walls to keep fabric color true, but the area with photograph furniture will be colored, probably a light green. Trim in the room will be light brown, probably maple wood color, to add depth to the space. 
The bathrooms will have tile or linoleum floors because water/moisture, but I want the walls to be colorful. I haaaaate white bathrooms. They hurt my eyes when I turn the lights on. The main bathroom will probably be a meadow theme with lots of flowers, and even go so far as the light fixtures to look like flowers. The other bathroom will set up to look like a science lab, because I can, and it’s funny. The walls will be slightly off, the light fixtures will look like beakers or something along those lines. If a curtain is used to cover the doorway to the shower, it’ll have the elemental/science table on it. You get the idea.
The kitchen will have a strawberry/cherry them with green cabinets and cupboards that are transparent with windows. We have ADHD; outta sight, outta mind. The handles on everything will have strawberries or cherries, the wall will be white with strawberry/cherry wallpaper or tiles, with concrete or cement countertops to look like marble but a fraction of the cost and sealed against moisture. I want the colors to be green, dark pink/rich red, white, and brown. I favor farmer’s style kitchens, Bubby prefers chef style, so we’ll need to compromise. An island is a must, with a fantastic fan to pull smoke up outta the house, and space for prepping. I’m a baker, he’s a cook, and we currently have a tiny kitchen. Space to hang our pots and pans too. Oh, and a section set aside specifically for my tea. We call the little mobile island we got for me my “tea station” because I fucking love tea. I also collect teacups and mugs, and want a place to display these without them falling. Some are massive, some are tiny, a few are display only due to damage or being strictly decorative. I wanna show off my growing collection and have a place for my electric kettle and all my teas (black, green, white, herbal, herbal coffee).
The dining room will be an orange/white/green theme for color, but items will vary throughout the year, like lightly color flowers in the summer, butterflies and darker flowers in the summer, pumpkins in autumn, and something random in the winter. The flooring is currently undecided. I don’t want the dining room and kitchen to be open because smell and noise, plus I like separated spaces. The flooring will be light colored, possibly the same color as the front of the house. The table will be expandable, going from four seats to eight or ten, for DnD because I make terrains, buildings, and such for Bubby’s games. I don’t play, I build, and I want there to be space for all those to be used without feeling crowded. These will be stored either upstairs or in the second living room.
The second living room is undecided, but if it houses the stuff mentioned above, it’ll be something that fits it. Because I can. If it doesn’t house all that, it’ll likely be scrap quilt as well, with light flooring and dark blue walls. No built in shelves here.
Upstairs is up to Bubby. He wants lots shelves, a space for his TV, which he wants big, his video gaming consoles, his comic books, and DnD books. He has suggested he have the second living room to serve the purpose of his DnD stuff, including painting his miniatures, leaving the upstairs just for him to chill. That works for both of us too, though it leaves guests forced to share the guest room regardless of comfort level. That may work in our favor because guests are unlikely to outstay their welcome, which is vital for my mental health.
The extra storage will also likely be connected to Bubby’s room. Because most of what we have in storage is simply made of things we have no space for, the storage room itself will need only be small enough for what little is actually needed.
The entire house will be wheelchair accessible, meaning there will be one of those elevator seat things that goes upstairs, ramps to and from the outside doors, grips in the bathrooms, and wide doorways.
Every room will have space for an altar or devotional section. Bubby is Theravada Buddhist, I work with portions of two pantheons as well as local spirits, house spirits, ancestor veneration, and am a pagan and witch. He has a little altar in his space right now, and I have a fairly large one in mine. Some spaces in our dream house will be shared, like Frigg and Freyja in the sewing room, Frigg in the kitchen, The Morrigan, Hel, Freyr and Freyja in the bedroom, Cernunnos, Thor and Freyr in the garden and other workspaces (I intend to take on carpentry because I fucking love building stuff), Cernunnos by doors leading in and out of the house, The Morrigan and Thor near the gate to the carport and into the front and backyard, etc. I’ll have wallhangings for each, plus sections on shelves, counters, etc. They play a huge role in our lives, and deserve a more than just the small space they have.
As for consoles, I have a PS2, XBox One, and Nintendo Switch, and intend to get an XBox Series X. He has an XBox 360 and XBox One, neither of which reads discs anymore, so he also has a Blue Ray player, and I intend to surprise him with an XBox Series X this year after paying off our debts. Said debts are Care Credit with $1300 left and collecting credit and a monthly $100 bill due monthly, our water heater installation which was $3k and is down to $2400 with $110 due monthly and not collecting interest for another five years, and our Discover card, which was debt transfer, the account closed as soon as it was transferred five years ago to stop collecting interest. We had opened the original debt when we needed money to move across the country. Now it has just under $5k left to pay off. It’s a monthly $132 bill. One hefty commission or selling any of the larger quilts I’ll be finished this year will cover the Care Credit bill in one go, a few quilt purchases or commissions for the rest. This will be  the year of lap to queen size quilts, and those range from $600 to $4k, seeing as most of the work is done by hand. Once these are paid off, though, I intend to spoil the ever-loving-fuck outta my husband because he’s done such great work as my caregiver and works so hard to bring in money. I’m on SSDI, now less than $800/month because we make too much to qualify for state-covered Medicare premium coverage, which is nearly $200/month.
This is an extensive pipe dream that will require a lottery of some sort or a very rich patron who wants to support me with millions of dollars. As they drove up to the gate, Seth knew this house. It was the old Hawthorne place. Isaac Hawthorne built this house when he moved to Brindleton back around 1920. His family lived here for two or three generations, the last being Daniel Hawthorn who was only twenty-nine when he went out to the bay for a morning fishing expedition and was never seen again. He was a bachelor and had no heirs or family left and the house remained vacant. In High School Seth and his friends would climb the gate and hang out. Getting drunk and smoking some weed. He was never in the house itself though.

MARK- “Wow, this place is old, how long has it been empty??”
ROYCE- “Sometime back in the early 1970′s, the county got the property when Daniel Hawthorne, the owner at the time died. They were going to renovate it into a hotel and resort, but never could get votes for the funding. They turned it over to sell about eight years ago.”
SETH- “We used to hang out up here in High School.”
ROYCE- “It needs a lot of work, but you can get a Renovation Loan, and save some taxes on it. Plus the county wants it out of their hands. So they are asking very little for it.  Mainly the land worth. So, interested in seeing inside?”
SETH / MARK - “SURE!”

ROYCE- “Yes the foundation is good, as well and the main structure. Now some of the flooring upstairs needs repair and a lot of paint and a good cleaning. You would probably want to put in new bathroom fixtures and maybe have the plumbing and electrical looked at, but yes, structurally sound.”
SETH- “So just what are they asking for it?”
ROYCE- “$150, that is what the land is worth, or that is it’s appraised value. But like I said you could get a renovation loan up to double that amount to restore it.”
MARK- “That is cheap, so why hasn’t it sold??”
ROYCE- “Just old stories, Seth has probably heard them. They say that Daniel Hawthorne haunts this place.”
SETH- “I spent a lot of time here back in High School, we never heard or saw anything. I don’t believe in that shit anyway.”
ROYCE- “I suppose that’s a good thing.  Let’s look around, in here is the main living area----”
